When Herb Kbehler was in
chaise of the Richmond Hill

wreck in which many hundreds of
passengers were killed and in-jured.
There were over 100
dead. He had at that time to
commandeer every available
vehicle in N.Y. Cify and Queens
to remove the wounded and dead
to either first aid and hospitals
or the Moi'gue and clear up the
panic and take command of the
situation. Many procedures in-stituted
by Mr. Kbehler who was
promoted to Inspector and
decorated were then adopted by
the N.Y, City Police, Based on
his own vast experience he re-marked
that the N.Y. City Police
Dept. Administration has had to
formulate complete procedures
for any emergency,' However,
hardly a year goes by without
some unforeseen Incident break-ing
routine in tlie various parades

Herb is a well built and com-manding
6 ft, 1 inc, tall man
who wears his years lightly and

brown eyes and greying hair. He
teaches at The Delehanty hi-stitute
two classes a week and
gets quite involved in any worth-while
community program here in
Lynbrook. He remebers captur-ing
three southern escaped
fugitives single handedly when he
was on the force but is a ter-ribly
modest man so that one has
to practically hypnotize him to get

Herbert W. Kbehler is one
of the beloved comparatively new
residents of Lynbrook who has al-ready
given of himself with such
dedication in Village of Lynbrook
projects such as "Lynbrook
Week" and "The Ute the Mte"
program in conjunction with Long
Island Lighting Co.
Herb was born in New York
City on E. 104th St. and the house
is still there after so many event-ful
years of his life have passed.
His late mother, Rosa, was both
a school teacher and a newspaper
writer, while his father,
Guido Alexanderwasamemberof
the New York City Police Force.
Herb chuckles at the reason why
his romantic grandmother chris- •
tened his dad, Guido Alexan-der
after her favorite author of
the day although the name seemed
quite ^ien in his particular fam-ily.
His late brother, Bert or
Berthold Eugene was Money Or-der
Clerk at the Lynbrook Post
Office for many years until his
death. He has one sister, Mrs.
Florence Salzman who resides
in Rosedale.
Herb attended public school in
New York City, graduating from
Commercial High School. He
enlisted in World War I and
served in the Hindenberg lines,
all parts of France and Germany,
receiving the Purple Heart and
Three Combat Medals. After
he was mustered out he tried to
decide for a while just what he
wanted to do with his life like
so many young people of today.
For a time he wanted to study
Law, Electronics, or Automotive
Engineering. He married the for-mer
beautiful showgirl and
dancer Camille Kaminsky in
1921, He proposed by letter
whUe she was appearing in a show
in Chicago and she returned and
married him and lived happily
ever after. This week this won-derful
couple celebrate their
Golden Wedding Anniversary and
have a lovely Great-Grandchild.
Camille has never lost her
sparkle or handsome appearance
and 'is a clever and very witty
lady who is loads of fun to be
with. She has a most infectious
chuckle and never takes herself
too seriously. Herb certainly
made the right choice in picking
her for his wife.
He joined the New York City
Police Dept. in 1924 and was
