Personalities
b y A n n e t t e L i n?
Mr. Abraham I. Bate is one of the most interesting personalities
among the old-time residents of Lynbrok, U.S.A.
He was born in Bialstock, Russia 78 years ago to the late Hyman and
Jenny Bate and was one of five children born to his mother and father.
All of them are still alive and include Abe, his sister, Bessie, (Mrs. S.
Paris, a resident of Miami, Fla., along with another brother. Jack, and
a sister, Belle, (Mrs. Philip Greenberg) and a brother, Morris, both
residents of Norwalk, Conn.
The Bate family emigrated to the United States on Jan. 17, 1910.
Abraham remembers that he was naturalized in 1916 in Fairfield
County Supreme Court in Bridgeport, Conn. His parents owned a
grocery store and the children helped out in the family store during
most of their spare time in their growing-up years in Norwalk, Conn.
Abe came to Lynbrook in 1926 on February 1st when he purchased
the Lynbrook Bottling Co. of Merrick Rd.
He had been married in 1921 to the late former Elizabeth Shorpick
and the couple had three strong sons to delight their days. Jack,
Sidney, and Harold all graduated from Lynbrook High School and
have also been quite active in Lynbrook, especially, Sidney, who was
in business with his Dad.
Abraham Bate is a lively, highly intelligent and keen-witted gen-tleman
with a sparkling personality and great warmth of character.
He is 5 ft , 4 in. in height with white hair and blue eyes and a great
sense of humor.
He was a widower for about two years until he remarried and his
wife is the former Sophie Fine and they have been a perfect couple

Ablowitz, Eugene, Stanley, Stephen, Lawrence, Beth, Jennifer, Jef-frey,
Mark, all children of the Bate sons and their wives and grand-child,
Leigh Fine. When the whole family gets together they have a
great time. Grandpa Abe is a particular favorite of all of his loving
grandchildren and it is wonderful to see the light in his eyes when he
talks about them.
One of the most memorable events in his life was to get out of Russia
with all the repression the family experienced and to become a free
citizen of the United States. Like most naturalized citizens he greatly
values his right to vote and has never failed to vote in any election. The
liberties we take so much for granted are highly treasured by folks
like Mr. Bate and they are wonderful and patriotic civic-minded
citizens.
In his long and wonderful life, the next most memorable event is the
honor which will be paid to him by Congregation Beth David for his 46
years as the oldest consecutive member of the congregation with a
special "kiddush" to be attended by members of the Congregation and
