JOHN MOLICK
The new commander of the
Howard Lathrop Post #2307 of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars is a
tall, interesting man called John
Molick.
John was not born in Brooklyn
but Pittsburgh, Pa. to the late
Joseph Malick and his wife,
Albina, now, a resident of Cen-tereach,
N.Y.
He has a brother, Joseph, also,
a resident of Centereach, and a
brother Richard from Old
Bridge, New Jersey. His one
sister, Mary Lou, now Mrs. Peter
Mikiten of Selden, N.Y.
His family moved to the Bronx
when he was two years old and he
attended public school in the
Bronx and graduated from
Samuel Gompers High School. He
served a full four years in the
Korean War in the Air Force on
active duty. It is a period of his
life that was such a difficult time,
he would rather not talk about it.
After service he went to
Oklahoma State University and
Texas University majoring in
Business Administration.
He is married to the former
Helen Salina of Valley Stream
and they are now residents of
Lynbrook on Smith Street and
have been for many years.
John is 6 ft. 4" tall, and 180 lbs
and yet appears lanky but
athletic and in excellent physical
condition. He has the naturally
lean, slim build of an athlete such
as a basketball player and yet he
is now strictly a spectator sports
lover enjoying basketball,
baseball and football games. In
college he played basketball and
enjoyed it very much.
He loves to read and does ^n
extensive amount of reading of
all types of books and periodicals
which keep him pretty well in-formed
about things.
He and his wife have just
returned from a V.F.W. Con-vention
held up state and before
that had a nice vacation in
Canada, especially the Eastern
part such as Toronto and the
eastern shore of Lake Ontario.
Mr. and Mrs. Malick have a
son, Robert, age 21. A Lynbrook
resident, who lives with his wife
on Lyons Place and he and his
wife will make first-time grand-parents
sometime in October.
Their son, Kevin, age 20 is
serving with the 87th Airborne
Division of the U.S. Army at Fort
Bragg as a Paratrooper. They
have twins, a son, Paul, in the
U.S. Air Force stationed at
Keesler Air Force Base in Miss,
and his twin sister, age 18 who
resides with her parents. She is a
Dental Assistant.
One of the most memorable
and worst experiences of his life
was the time he, guarding Kimpo
Air Force Base in Korea and the
enemy in a "war of nerves,, kept
up an incessant horn-blowing
which was screeching and nerve-wracking
hour after hour to
undermine American troop
morale.
One of the happiest experiences
of his life was his marriage to"his
charming wife, Helen. He called
her the world's best home-maker,
best wife, etc. and a marvelous
cook and baker. He particularly
loves her Italian food and her
complete understanding and
deep interest in his work and off-hour
interests.
The V.F.W. Post and the work
done by the men there play a very
important role in his life. He
stated that the V.F.W. has been
critized for it's patriotism etc.
but it serves to remind the
American people that the
veterans who have returned from
our wars and organized into such
groups as the V.F.W. serve as
e f f e c t i v e c o m m u n i ty
organizations because of their
unique make-up and that
promoting patriotism and love of
country should be in the thinking
of every American and not just
veterans in order to help
preserve our American way of
life for future generations.
John is a member and a busy
working member of "The Rock"
or Prudential Life Insurance Co.,
where he is No. 1 agent in the
Hempstead office in sales volume
alone. John is also Nassau County
Adjutant for the V.F.W.
Mayor Becker'has appointed
him to be one of the Com-mitteemen
for the coming Bi-centennial
Celebration of the
U.S. which is coming in 1976.
My impressions of John Molick
was that he is a very quiet but
forceful man with a keen mind
and a deep faith and liking for
both his work and his attachment
to the V.F.W. He gets along well
with people and seems to be the
kind of man who can get the best
out of anyone working with him
just by his own excellent
example. The Lynbrook V.F.W.
has a fine and dedicated new
Commander in line with his fine
predecessors and they should
have a good year with John
Molick at the helm of their fine
organization. He is a very
likeable man and easy to talk to.
