Street Lighting
Program Starts
In Lynbrook
Mayor Francis X. Becker
announced today that the long
awaited street lighting im-provement
project in the Village
of Lynbrook has begun.
The work will be divided into
two stages; the first being the
tree trimming program, which is
now in process, to be followed by
the installation of new lighting
fixtures throughout the
residential street of the Village.
Mayor iBecker further stated
that a pilot program including
tree trimming and installation of
lights has already been com-pleted
on Leach Street, between
John Street and Crab Avenue in
Lynbrook. Residents are invited
to visit this street to see for
themselves exactly what the
results will be when the work is
finished.
It is expected that the entire
project will be completed in the
Spring of 1974, and will be
tmanced entirely by Federal
Revenue Sharing Funds, thereby
avoiding any increase in Lyn-brook
Village taxes.
INVITED TO
STATE DINNER
Former Congressman Frank J.
Becker this past week was in-vited
by President Nixon to a
state dinner at the White House
for the President of Romania.
This was a great honor for one of
our native sons and should be
noted.
RECEIVES AWARD
Personalities
by Annette Ling
mentioned the two dishes as his
favorites the way she prepares
them.
Ken is 6 ft. 2 in. tall with grey
hair and blue eyes and is'quite
handsome and clean-cut looking
with an excellent .sense of humor.
He is what I would call a man's
man and gives the impression of
modesty, dependability and inner
strength. He was seriously hurt in
a crash of the police car he was
in on Sunrise Highway in which
his back, neck and head were
hurt and now does inside desk
work at police headquarters. He
recalled some of the highlights of
his police service over the years
and how he once captured a hold-up
man hiding back of Green's
Jewelry store and several other
rather exciting experiences that
came into routine police work
from day to day on the job. He
once had to chase some young
men at 100 miles an hour all the
way to Freeport and found out
thai tney nad run because they
could not pay for a local ham-burger
place's meal. It is most
unfortunate that New York City
residents do not realize just how
human and kind police can be.
Many times they have personally
rendered aid to this writer and I
will never forget their kindness
when my late mother died in the
store and they and their close
team-work with our wonderful
Fire Dept. make Lynbrook truly
a wonderfully safe place to live.
We owe the men on our force a
tremendous debt. They do a good
job day after day. The unusual
rapporte' and affection of our
Lynbrook residents with the
police is also a fine thing to see.
Kenny Behr finds police work
very rewarding and worthwhile
as a career. He is doing and
performing a service for the
people which he enjoys and that
makes all the difference in the
world.
He was President of the
Patrolmens' Benevolent Assoc.
before for three years and this
will mark his second term as
President. He represents a fine
group of men and is just as fine a
human being as our new Chief
Frank Kehr on down. We wish
him good luck in the years ahead
and better health. Ken Behr is a
plain "good joe" or "nice guy."
One cannot help but respect and
like him.
Ex-Chief George Neissing of the Malverne Fire Department, with Mrs. Neissing, shows the award he
received as Fireman of the Year from the Shaeffer Brewery Co. to Chief Gregory S. Turrell, 2nd. from
right, and Mayor Thomas L. Driscoll, right.

Patrolman J. Kenneth Behr is
the new President of
P a t r o l m e n ' s Benevolent
Association of the Lynbrook
Police Force and was born in
Roosevelt, Long Island to John
and Catherine Behr who now
make their home in Shirley, New
York.
Ken is a very quiet and in-teresting
personality with both
feet firmly planted on the ground
a depth of understanding of other
people that most good police
officers seem to have.
He has a deceased brother,
Ronald and quite a fine family of
his own. He attended public
schools in Roosevelt until about
the Sophomore year in Lynbrook
High School when he was fifteen
and his family moved to Lyn-brook.
He liked sports at Lyn-brook
High and still shows the
sanTe fondness for that renowned
school as many other people such
as in my own family.
Ken is a veteran of the Korean
War and after his war service he
began to work as an electrician's
apprentice.
He is married to the former
Theresa McNamara of Malverne.
They were good friends in high
school years and were married in
1955. The couple have four
children, Kenneth, Jr., age 17 1/2,
Kathleen, age 14 1/2, Kevin, age
10, and Keith, 7 years old.
One of the memorable
highlights in Ken Behr's life has
been his marriage to his beloved
Theresa and the birth of his
wonderful children. There can be
no doubt of his deep devotion to
his wife and family as he talks
about them. His face lights up as
he describes his wife's good
cooking and the good times they
have boating and bathing in the
warmer months. Kenny Behr is
most definitely a family man and
a fine police officer. The best
vacation they have enjoyed was a
trip to Bermuda and the spot they
go to in East Durham in the
Catskills. His wife's roast beef
and spaghetti and meat balls
must be quite special as he
