Labor Dept. Presentation
Cite Local Firm For
NY Industrial Award
A local insurance company has
been cited by the Governor's
Committee on "Employ the
Handicapped" with an award
presented by Industrial Com-missioner
Louis L. Levine, head
of the State Labor Department.
Alvin Perlin, president, ac-cepted
the citation on behalf of
the Lion Insurance Company of
New York at ceremonies in his
Lynbrook office. William
Wallach, president of the Robert
Plan Corp., owners of Lion In-surance,
attended the presen-tation.
Commissioner Levine, in
making the presentation, said,
"Enlightened employers of our
State, such as Lion Insurance,
know that a worker should be
hired for his abilities. The fact
that an individual has a disability
should not immediately
disqualify that person for a job.
The main consideration should
be: Can the worker do the job
which has to be done?"
Pointing to the excellent at-tendance
and production records
of so-called handicapped per-sons,
Commissioner Levine said,
"This fact alone should be of
primary importance to the
businessman who wants to im-prove
his profit potential."
Perlin concurred with the
Commissioner saying: "Men and
women are not considered
handicapped if their disabilities
do not interfere with their job
performance."
Lion Insurance Company has
for many years employed several
persons with disabilities. Perlin
said his firm welcomes such
workers, "they are dependable
and efficient workers. The ad-ministrative
work they do is of
great benefit to me and the job
they hold benefits them."
The award presented Perlin
and the Lion Insurance Company
with a citation for meritorious
service from the New York State
Department of Labor and the
Governor's Committee on
"Employ the Handicapped" for
exceptional contributions in
furthering the employment of the
handicapped.
Unemployment Avoided
New Program To
Save Industry^ Jobs
Instead of losing 130 jobs, the
Lakeview area will soon be
getting 50 additional positions,
under a program utilizing the
first Industrial Revenue Bonds
issued in the metropolitan area,
the Helm-Review has learned.
The program, carried out under
the auspices of the Town of
Hempstead Local Development
Agency, involves a $3.2 million
industrial loan to Lakeview
Corrugated, a division of Simkins
Industries.
Simkins has terminated plans
to move their Lakeview
operation to Richfield, N.J. and
instead will use the proceeds of
the bonds to expand their 75,000
square foot plant into an ultra-modern
125,000 square foot
facility on a ten acre site near
Orlando Avenue in Lakeview.
TWO YEAR NEGOTIATION
Under the program, negotiated
over two years by Industrial
Development Agency Executive
Director Roy N. Cacciatore,
Simkins Industries, which had
been leasing a/10 acre site, will
own the property as well as the
building and machinery after the
20-year bQnds have been repaid.
As part of the agreement,
Simkins will reimburse the
agency for all local property
taxes which will continue to be
paid.
Lakeview Corrugated has an
annual payroll of $1,650,000. This
is expect^ to grow to over $2
million when the 50,000 square
foot expansion is completed later
this year.
Simkins Industries president,
Morton H. Simkins of
Philadeli^ia, praised Cacciatore
and Industrial Development
Agency Chairman, George Trias,
for their efforts in saving an
important industry for Hemp-stead
Town.
PRAISES GOV'T
"The Industrial Develop-ment
Bond program offered by
the Hempstead Town Local
Development Agency is an
outstanding example of how
government and industry can
work in partnership. I am
delighted to be able to keep this
important operation in Hemp-stead
Town and to be able to
expand and offer additional
employment opportunities."
CHEMICAL REACTION: Malverne High School students were forced last week to evacuate the school
building after a chemistry experiment "went astray". The Malverne Fire Department sent a team into
the room wearing protective masks to carry out the container and two other cans of sodium also being
stored. Firemen Cole Flaherty (left), James Bove (center) and second Assistant Chief Harold
Petersen are depicted after removing the smoldering substance. (Helm - Review photo by George

CORDIAL WELCOME: The Lynbrook Republican Club welcomed assembly candidate, Louis Milone,
Jr., (second from left) to its opening Fall meeting. Milone is an active volunteer fireman and member
of the Rockville Centre Rescue Squad. Club president, Robert G. Becker (left) and committeemen
Mike Egan and Jack Rosino (right) endorsed Milone's promise to work as an independent Republican
to obtain more State aid for the District.
