Assaults mar Baldwin High School Homecoming
A stabbing arid gunfire marred Baldwin
High School's homecoming 'celebration
Friday night when four young men were
assaulted in the high school's parking lot.
According to Nassau County police
detectives, four young men from Freeport
were leaving the football game at Baldwin
High School when they were approached
by two black men in the parking lot. One
man pointed a black handgun at the vic-tims
and fired two shots. One bullet
entered a 1999 Ford Explorer that was
parked in the lot. The car was occupied by
a 44-year-old man and his 8-year-old
daughter at the time. There were no
injuries as a result of the shooting.
The four male victims ran towards the
school, and became separated. One victim
- a 20-year-old man - was punched and
stabbed two times in the parking lot by an
unknown assailant, said police. He was
transported to an area hospital for treat-ment
of his injuries. The remaining vic-tims
- three 16-year-old boys - were not
harmed.
Baldwin High School senior Arielle
Martinez said "around 8:30 p.m., between
the third and fourth quarters of the football
game, the game was suspended when gun-shots
were heard coming from the parking
lot on the south side of the field. The
Baldwin Bruins were leading Hicksville
High School's Comets, 33-0.
"Police cars, ambulances and a helicop-ter
arrived on the scene. Police and school
security immediately had the football field
evacuated," explained Arielle. "Many
people who attended the game congregat-ed
in the parking lots of CVS and the
Rosen Shopping Center but were quickly
moved out by police officers," she added.
Arielle described what happened next.
'The Hicksville Comets were moved to a
school bus on the north side of the field.
Baldwin High School's Pep Band, which
walked past the scene only moments after
the crime occurred, were kept inside of the
school."
"The violence had nothing to do with
the football game. It was a tragedy.
Homecoming activities were well organ-ized,
well attended and very successful,"
said B.A. Schoen, former school board
member.
"District administration and the Board
of Education are very concerned about
what happened at the Baldwin High
School Homecoming Friday night," said
Baldwin Superintendent Dr. James Mapes.
"What had started out as a wonderful
community event was cut short by
criminal behavior that is being investi-gated
by police. No Baldwin students
were hurt. The district is cooperating
fully with the investigation and taking
every precaution to keep students and
staff safe."
Dr. Mapes added that "while Monday
was a regular school day, there was height-ened
security at the high school."
Additionally, "counselors are available for
students and staff as needed. This incident
is not a reflection of this community or
district and we will work together to get
through this situation," he said.
The first assailant is described as 5'3"
to 5 "6" tall, thin build, with a dark com-plexion,
wearing a red Addidas sweat
suit jacket, a red baseball cap and armed
with a black handgun. The second
assailant is described as 5'9" to 6'1"
tall, thin build dark complexion, wear-ing
a striped shirt.
Detectives request anyone with infor-mation
regarding the incident to call
Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-
