As the community pulls together, transportation to resources remains a challenge
by Linda Delmonico Prussen
A week after the onset of Hurricane
Sandy saw the village Board of Trustees
and the mayor both thankful and a bit
shell shocked at Monday night's village
Board Meeting. All were effusive in their
praise of the first responders, volunteers,
and various village departments.
Mayor Andrew Hardwick said, "We are
blessed to have people who care so much
and are so committed to our community."
He added as of Monday afternoon a
White House aide had been assigned to
help see Freeport through the crisis.
Trustee Carmen J. Pineyro said, "I also
want to thank all of our staff in the village
of Freeport for working around the
clock." Trustee Robert T. Kennedy
thanked the Police Department, the
Department of Public Works, Fire
Department, and ' Department of
Emergency Management. He said, "It's a
team that will make this village win."
But it was clear when the meeting was
opened by the mayor, to comments from
the community, despite there being no
official public comment session, there
was still much to address on what may be
for some a long road to recovery.
Getting resources where needed
One man approached the mike and
said, "You have so many people without
transportation. So many areas darkened.
People fearing for their lives." He said
the amenities, such as showers, clothes,
food and water being offered at the
Freeport Recreation center are "for
naught" if the residents who need them
cannot get there to use them. Freeport's
director of emergency management,
Richard Holdener, who was praised by
the mayor and board for his work during
this crisis, said his team would look into
trying to rectify the situation of getting
people to the available resources, and/or
the resources to the people who need
them. Mr. Holdener said his home too,
along with the homes of many emergency
workers and volunteers, was devastated
by the storm.
Trustee William H. White Jr. said he
had four feet of water in his home.
Deputy Mayor Jorge A. Martinez said
he understood residents' frustrations. He
said he too lost most of what he owned
due to Sandy. He said, "You know what
killed me? I lost my kids' pictures, first
communions, baptisms..." He said he
was touched by the work of everyone, the
coming together of neighbors, and was
especially thankful for the work of the
Red Cross and the volunteers at the local
churches. He implored residents, "Be
patient, work together, don't point fin-gers.
Mayor Hardwick said, "Look after
your neighbors. Know where your neigh-bors
are." He asked that those who know
of those in need, especially any elderly,
call the village on their neighbors' behalf
to help get them the resources they need.
Round two
Mr. Holdener advised residents if they
are asked to evacuate during the upcom-ing
nor'easter to heed the warning. He
said by not doing so and staying their
homes, residents risk not only their own
lives, but the lives of first responders that
may have to try and get to them.
Mayor Hardwick advised residents to
do their best to clean up all debris and not
to put anything else outside because there
could be strong wind gusts that can cause
more damage if items are placed outside.
