light, at the 26th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Observance. The inter-faith
observance took place at Ebenezer Seventh Day Adventist Church in
Freeport, and was organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration
Committee of Nassau County, Inc. During the ceremony, president and founder.of
the committee, retired Freeport police Detective Julius Pearse led participants in
a moment of silence for James David Rice, the former executive director of the
Nassau County Commission on Human Rights, and longtime Freeport resident.
HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: Students at Freeport's New Visions School honored Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. in a special program through performance and song, entitled "Walking Hand in Hand."
Fourth-graders sang "We Shall Overcome" and gave a timeline of events in Dr. King's life. Third-graders recit-ed
poems and sang "Happy Birthday, Dr. Martin Luther King." Second-grade students performed John
Lennon's "Imagine" and shared original poems with their peers. Parents and honored guests, including
Superintendent Dr. Kishore Kuncham, were also in attendance. Above are second-grade students from Ms.
Magan's class with their music teacher, Dr. Kuncham, Principal Renee Crump and Principal Susan DeLuca.
Budget approved
The Freeport Board of Trustees approved a
$60.3 million budget for 2011-2012 by a vote of
3-2, with Trustees Bill White and Jorge
Martinez in opposition.
At the start of the meeting budget consultant
David Tanner gave explanations and answered
questions regarding individual line items.
Clarification was sought on a matter discussed
during the January 10 budget hearing: is the
budget increase 3.9 or 4.7%?
Mr. Tanner told The Leader that the 3.9% fig-ure
represented the increase in the total amount
to be raised by taxation ($40.7 million), but that
the the tax rate ($57.453 per $100 of assessed
valuation) will increase 4.7%. The difference is
the result in changes in assessed valuation. Both
figures were reflected in the actual budget reso-lution
- as Trustee Robert Kennedy noted, "The
only thing the public wants to know is, 'How
much are my taxes going up?' "
In explaining his negative vote, Trustee
White, while acknowledging some positive fea-tures
in the budget, argued that money is still
being misspent. He particularly criticized the
mayor for not applying the same budgetary
restraint in all facets of village expenditures.
