A Day To Celebrate The Irish and
Francis X. DeBobes
Many County and Town officials were on hand to salute Frank. From left to right
is Councilman Angelo Delligatti; Town Clerk Steve Labriola; Town of Oyster Bay
Supervisor John Venditto; Francis X. DeBobes; former Grand Marshal Gary Bretton;
Teddy Roosevelt; Councilwoman Rose Walker; Legislator Ed Mangano;
Councilwoman and Parade Organizer Mary McCaffery and Councilman Joe
Muscarella.
The DeBobes family ( L to R) Jillian, Frank, Janine and Jenna.
Missing from the photo is Frank Jr., who undoubtedly could
have been found on a fire truck somewhere.
Grand Marshal
Francis X. DeBobes
A Message To Frankie
Dear Mr. DeBobes,
Let me just say that I could not have selected a better person to serve as Grand Marshal of the St. Patrick's Day Parade.
No one would have been better " suited" for this honor although you almost didn't have one. ( I'll save that for another
story.)
On a personal note you have always been therefor my family and I could never thank you for your generosity, compassion
and support. And while I could certainly go on and on about how wonderful my " Newspaper Boy" is I can only
say that it really is an honor to be your friend. You have a wonderful family and a wife who truly is a saint.
So to Mr. Frankie I say a great big congratulations! Yon certainly have come a long way from that bicycle with the
strobe light taped to it. We all love you.
trom the Lemonade Girl
by Mary McCaffrey
Frank DeBobes, 2005 Grand
Marshal, followed by family
members, elected officials and
members of the Bethpage St.
Patrick's Parade Committee.
Fr. John McKenna, celebrant of
our annual St. Patrick's Parade
Mass, gave a beautiful homily on the
history of St. Patrick. He then
honored Frank DeBobes, the Grand
Marshal, for his life of service to the
community both as a volunteer
firefighter and a member of the
Nassau County Emergency
Services Team and for the example
he sets as a member of St. Martin's
Life Teen Group and a minister of
the Eucharist.
The parade went off in grand
style. With Frank as Grand Marshal,
fire departments from the
surrounding communities sent
contingents of marchers and lots of
trucks and apparatus - much to the
delight of the youngsters lining the
route. The pipe bands - colorful in
their tartan plaids - kept the marchers
in cadence while the antique cars
brought more splashes of color and
nostalgia to the parade. As always,
the K- 9 Brigade was the grand finale
with the many varieties of dogs
decked out in green hats and
Hawaiian leis.
Without the financial support of
the donors plus the money raised at
the party at St. Martin's, the
hundreds of people - maybe even
thousands - lining the parade route
would not have had such a colorful
event that serves as a harbinger of
spring and the end of a long, long
winter.

The clash of idealism and realism,
played out on a little league baseball
diamond. Michael and Don are two
mismatched Little League coaches
thrown together to embark on their
own season to remember. Watch
out, though, when Michael's " it's not
whether you win or lose, but how
you play the game" idealism
interferes with Don's singular goal to
crush the competition. It's a funny
and poignant portrayal not only of
fatherhood, sports and friendship,

talented pianist Eleni Traganas who
has performed at Alice Tully Hall and
Carnegie Hall, will be at the library to
present a program entitled " The
Post- Romantic Composers of
Imperial Russia." In the music
centers of Moscow and St.
Petersburg during the final years of
the reign of Tsar Nicholas II,
composers reflected an atmosphere
brimming with the turmoil and
mysticism of the age. Scriabin, the
musical philosopher and
revolutionary visionary and
Rachmaninoff, the conservative
stabilizing force represent a clash of
ideals with coincides with the
downfall of an established order.
Music of these and other
composers, including Tchaikovsky
will be featured as Traganas
explores Russian piano music of the
late 19th Century. There will also be
an unusual slide show that ties the
fate of the Imperial family to the lives
of these musicians.

Marine Corps League
Sponsors College Fair
The Marine Corps League is
sponsoring a unique college fair
designed for students interested in
more than a traditional college
experience. Many colleges and
universities across this nation offer a
military experience in addition to
superb academic and athletic
challenges. While several of the
schools in attendance have a strong
military component, many of their
students graduate with no military
obligation and succeed in the civilian
sector.
This college fair is open to all high
school students. While it will appeal
greatly to students interested in
pursuing a career as a
commissioned officer in the United
States Armed Forces, any student
looking for a challenge is
encouraged to attend. Colleges and
universities with ROTC programs will
have the opportunity to showcase
their academic and ROTC programs,
as well as a wide variety of
scholarships available.
Saturday, March 19, 2005. Setup

Central Park Historical Society
March 2005
MARCH PROGRAM - We are
fortunate to have members in our
society who continue to be active in
many ways in educating and
preserving the history of our
community. Ernie Finamore, once a .
Grumman employee and now a very
active retiree, has put together a
very interesting program, with the
assistance of Richie Kalen. The
program, ' The History of Plane One
in Bethpage," will highlight the way it
was growing up during the early
days of the Grumman Aircraft
Company. Ernie has gathered facts,
figures, production rates and many
personal anecdotes. While Richie
will bring his collection of models
and memorabilia, which will add to
the presentation. A time we hope
you will share your memories of this
very proud time in Bethpage history,
on March 23, 2005 at the Bethpage
Library, Powell Ave. at 7: 30 P. M.
Information - Lenny Mulqueen 935-
2674; Ann Albertson 933- 1795. E-mail
- cphsbethpage@ aol. com
APRIL PROGRAM - Looking
ahead to April 27, we are planning a
fun and interesting program, Meet
Your Teacher Night... Again. Mr.
Harry Settino, a retired teacher of
the Bethpage High School, is in the
process of contacting his teaching
colleagues and they are planning to
take us back in time. A time when
school days were the good old -
fashion golden rule days??? We will
find out! This should be a fun
evening to meet the teacher with all
the pressure taken off the teacher,
parent and student. Mark your
calendar, bring a friend or maybe
your children would like to attend.
MARCH DAYS - March 17, St.
Patrick's Day, a day we all celebrate
with our Irish friends as they honor
their heritage. Bethpage will
celebrate the occasion on Sunday,
March 6, with a grand parade down
Broadway after the 1: 00 mass at St.
Martin of Tours Church. We
congratulate Frank DeBobes for
being honored as the Grand Marshal
of the 2005 St. Patrick's Day Parade.
MEMBERSHIP- Our
membership drive is underway and
we are proud of the response we
have received from our members
with the payment of your dues and
the stories you have submitted to
share with our members and for our
archives. A list of our paid members
is enclosed and we thank you for
your support. If your name does not
appear on the list and you paid your
dues we will have an updated list
next month. If you have not sent in
your dues of $ 10.00 for 2005 and a
gift membership for $ 5.00, we want
you to know we are always ready and
willing to accept your dues sent to
our PO Box, 178 Bethpage, NY
11714- 0178 or at our regular
monthly meeting. I am sorry for the
confusion by not listing the dollar
amount for dues on the application
form.
IT IS GREAT HEARING FROM
YOU - We have received e- mail
messages from Susan Anderson
and Bob Holzmacher regarding The
Encyclopedia of Central
Park/ Bethpage. We welcome their
comments, corrections and
additions to the Encyclopedia. We
need all your input to make it a
success. The Encyclopedia can be
accessed on the Bethpage Library
web site as a work in progress.
Bob Holzmacher also reminisced
that he attended school with Danny
Schiavetta, both Powell Avenue
elementary school and Farmingdale
High School, along with Bill Margot.
Margot's family lived on the
southeast corner of Herman Avenue
and Central Avenue, across from the
Ahem residence. Bill relocated to
California and is now deceased.
Susan Anderson gave us
interesting background about the
Anderson Florist, later known as
Anderson Brother's Florist, who
grew and arranged flowers in Central
Park then Bethpage for more than
fifty years. We appreciate the
additional information which will
update the existing information in
the Encyclopedia.
We received the following
reflections, thoughts and stories,
from the following members:
William F. Stokes remembers
before Grumman existed in Central
Park/ Bethpage, the only places to
work that had more than a few
workers were the school, farms,
Lauman Co. and the Mid Island
Laundry, which was on
Bloomingdaie Ave. As Charlie
Tallman knows, a lot of us worked for
C. W. Lauman - ' The Good Old
Days." Bethpage State Park also
had more than a few workers.
Dorothy Lackert Messemer
wishes she was closer so she could
lend " you all" a hand. We enjoy the
Society!
Rodman Hartjen expresses , ,
thanks for the newsletter. I surely
enjoy it and the news about
Bethpage, past and present.
Reading your stories is great and
most of all it is a pleasure to have
recollections stirred up about all the
grand, substantial, and friendly
people whose names stand out in
the newsletter. Danny Schiavetta
( classmate at Powell Avenue
School), Mrs. Fredricks ( Librarian for
soooo many years), Eddie Schaff
( one of my Sunday School teachers
at St. Paul's), Pastor and Mrs. Taylor
and their children, James and
Debbie, when they were students in
my class at Bethpage High School.
The list goes on—.
Barbara and Bob Hill shared the
following: We resided in Bethpage
from 1956 to 1988, first on Second
Street then Manchester Drive. Our
four children were bom and raised in
Bethpage, naturally, we hold many
fond memories of friends and
neighbors who still live there. When
Bob retired, we moved to New
Hampshire. It is a beautiful state and
we love it, but Bethpage will always
be with us. PS 18" of snow is not a
lot at one time!! We know!
Anthony Simone reminded us
that, Vermont is cold in the winter,
delightful the rest of the year and
always beautiful. We thank him for
his donation.
Louis W. Uccellini is proud to say
he is Lenny Mulqueen's, cousin. He
grew up in Bethpage right behind
the library on land originally owned
by our grandfather and
grandmother.
Joan and John Gannam moved
to Bethpage in 1975. One of our
memories of our first years here was
Leo Schottland's articles in the
Bethpage Tribune. His writings on
Bethpage and the walks he took
around town and at the Bethpage
State Park really made us feel like we
moved to a special place. Any
chance of reprinting some of those
articles or some of his poems in the
newsletter? Answer: Of course!
Marilyn Cochrane Fink was kind
to add Terry and Debbie Weber and
Brian Bordt as members to the
society. Terry Weber, his wife
Debbie ( O'Leary) and Brian were all
born and raised in Bethpage. We are
currently all working for Vought at
the Stuart, Florida facility, formerly
Grumman. Terry, Brian and my
husband, Rob, all have more than
30 years each in the company and
me 27 years. This facility will be
closing this year ( 2005) and will
move to Dallas, Texas. Terry and
Debbie plan on moving to Dallas,
Brian will be relocating to
Milledgeville, Georgia, and my
husband I will stay in Stuart and
retire. Although, working for
Vought, since they took over
Northrop/ Grumman three years ago,
we still feel like Grummanites as most
of the people in this facility do.
Being a part of this Historical Society
will help keep us close to our
Bethpage/ Grumman roots.
Janet M. Carnesi says, " I have
enjoyed reading the newsletter. We
moved here in 1967, so we cannot
tell you much about the area, but it
has been wonderful."
Joyce Calo: In the late 1800' s,
early 1900' s my great- grandfather
had his farm here in Central Park. His
name was Christian Miller. His
daughter ( my grandmother) was
Gertrude Kranz. She and my
grandfather, Albert Kranz, raised
their children in their home on
Central Avenue in the McCordville
part of Central Park. My mother,
Alice Kranz, was born in the house
on Central Avenue in 1912. Up until
her death in March of 2002 she lived
90 years in Bethpage and loved the
town. I am a 4th generation
Bethpage resident and my son is a
5th generation Bethpage resident.
Needless to say, I can't imagine
living anywhere else. We love this
community. My uncle George Kranz
used to drive a laundry truck here.
This town is home to me.
L. Gladys Bosch was born and
raised in Central Park. I attended the
little school and my mother was a
cook for the children. I had twin
sisters, Helen and Flo 2 1/ 2 years
younger. I had a beauty shop called
Gladys Beauty Shop across from the
railroad station. My maiden name
was Leidinger. I married John Bosch
and moved to Mineola then 2 1/ 2
years later we moved to Hempstead.
After ten years we went into a
business, luncheonette and gift
shop, in East Quogue, 40 miles
west of Montauk Point. We later
bought a house in Hampton Bays
five minutes from the ocean. I loved
it there. I have three children, Nancy,
Ellen, Johnnie, five grandchildren,
Susan, Wendy, David, Michele and
Derek, and four great grandchildren,
Alex, Morgan, Payton and Lanie. I'm
now living at Sterling Glen assisted
living and love it. Writing this brings
back fond memories.
Central Park Historical Society Update
Emilia ( Millie) S. Noce. I was born
in Central Park in December 1912 in
the house on Stewart Avenue which
is now Camerlengo ( Emil's) Garden
Center. The house was owned by
my paternal grandmother and both
her married sons ( my father) and her
married daughter and their spouses
lived with her. My aunt also had
three young children. My uncle
worked in Brooklyn, N. Y., and
commuted there by train every day.
My father worked, for a short time,
for one of the Goulds of " Rubber
Baron" fame, and I believe in Deer
Park. I don't know if it was THE Jay
Gould or one of his sons. Perhaps
one of your members can enlighten
me, was it a hunting lodge or one of
the Gould's homes? My
grandmother died in 1915,
whereupon, the house was sold and
we all moved to Brooklyn. We
moved back to Central Park in 1928
into a house once owned by George
Amendola. We lived continuously in
Bethpage for 42 years. I was
involved, during those years, in
many activities, such as, PTA
president, Girl Scout leader etc. My
co- leader of our senior Girl Scout
troop was Betty Bonnert. Some of
the troops member names, I am
sure, are very familiar to you Diane
Mulqueen, Janice Finamore,
Rockhill, and Badstuebner. I find
your newsletter very interesting and
some of the names mentioned in it
bring back nostalgic memories.
Although, I live in Baltimore, MD now
I still keep in touch with old friends'
Clara Gerke, Kay Wilson, Sylvia
Kessler, Marilyn and Sandy
Fabricator, and Anne Rozzi.
Robert and Marilyn Nitschke have
a Plainview address and live in the
Bethpage School District since
1955. Their children, Robert, Eric
and Joan went through the
Bethpage School System. Proud to
say they are friends of Cas Procida,
Mina Narucki, Ruth and Emil Affen,
and Lois Lovisolo. Robert has been
retired since 1988.
We will continue to share stories
and reflections about our town
Bethpage from our members in the
next newsletters. We appreciate all
the thoughts, comments and
support. It is truly wonderful to hear
the impact our town had on many
and the friendships that held strong
over the years.
DISPLAY CASE - We have
changed the display in the History
Room in the Bethpage Library. The
History Room is located across from
the Reference Desk in the library.
President, Lenny Mulqueen, a
master wood turner has lent some of
his creative wood turnings to be
displayed. Wood turning, over the
years, has evolved from its utilitarian
uses and became a craft for
pleasure, and it has now grown into
a beautiful art form. The eye of a
wood turner can see much potential
in a piece of wood, and he uses his
talents to bring out the beauty that
he visualized into a work of art. The
type of wood, the size, shape,
texture all makes for unique and
interesting creations. A branch or
part of a fallen tree in your yard can
be turned into a one of a kind work
of art.
Be sure to visit this beautiful
display.

Central Park Historical Society Update
The Bethpage Community Council
held its regular monthly meeting on
February 3, at the Bethpage Library.
Mr. Robert Walker, Deputy
Commissioner of Parks in the Town
of Oyster Bay, was not able to attend
this meeting to address the plans for
the renovations at the Bethpage
Community Park. We are looking
forward to meeting with him in the
near future in an effort to keep the
community informed on the future
plans for the enclosed ice- skating
rinks and the impact it will have on
the remaining park. Also, to address
the ongoing concerns regarding the
contaminates in the ground and the
proposed cleanup.
• President, Terri Black, took the
opportunity to review the
redevelopment plan for the Navy
105 acres located on the
Northrop/ Grumman property. We
urge the community to be vigilant
regarding this project and actively
participate by voicing your thoughts,
concerns and suggestions by
visiting
www. nassaucountyny. gov/ vision10
5.
• Jean Mazzara brought up her
concerns regarding the lack of good
snow removal from the sidewalks in
our community. The responsibility
for the clean up is with the property
owner. This proved to be a very
tough time for walkers to get around
our town.
• Mary Jane Pendl attended the
meeting on Gang Awareness in Your
Community held at the Plainedge
Middle School on February 2. The
program was presented by
Legislator Edward Mangano and
members of the Nassau County
Police Department Detectives
Association. Mary Jane said the
program was very informative on a
subject that is a national problem
which impacts everyone on some
level. Sadly, the program was not
well attended even with good, timely
publicity.
• Ann Albertson stated a concern
for the conditions in our community
in the area of the railroad station
where hundreds of people view our
community as they pass through as
commuters daily on the railroad, as
well as, all of us who live, work and
shop in our community. Frank
DeBobes volunteered to look into
replacing the existing flags located
on Stewart Ave. at the railroad
crossing. Ann also made the council
aware of the problem the Methodist
Church is having in the maintaining
of the Methodist Cemetery located
on 107 and is seeking help from the
community.
• Gina McGovern reported that
the Long Island Fair Housing
Partnership met with the Bethpage
School Board and discussed the
concerns for the future housing on
Long Island.
• Those of us who attend the

council meetings are always striviny
to make our town a better town for all
who live, work, shop and those who
are just passing through Bethpage.
This is a task that at times gets
discouraging resulting in thoughts
of incorporating our town. A task
force will be formed to evaluate the
possibilities.
• President, Terri Black, gave a
list of the Bethpage Community
Council meetings for 2005. The
Council always meets on the first
Thursday of the month, unless a
special meeting is called and the
membership will be informed at that
time via e- mail or post card. The
dates for 2005 are: March 3, April 7,
May 5, June 2, no meetings for July,
August or September, resuming on
October 6, November 3, and
December 1. The Council is your
way to be kept informed on what is
happening in our community and
giving you the opportunity to voice
your concerns and give your
opinion. It also gives all the
organizations the opportunity to
share what is going on and how we
can support each other for the good
of the community. All are welcomed,
bring a friend.
THE LONG ISLAND
CHILDREN'S MUSEUM - The Long
Island Children's Museum, located
next to the Cradle of Aviation in
Mitchel Field, is featuring hands- on
exhibit about Inuit children
( Eskimos). This is a wonderful
opportunity for children and adults
to learn about Inuit children 2,500
miles away in the Canadian Arctic.
The exhibit runs through May 15.
For more information call 516- 224-
5800. Take time to visit and support
our local museums.
WHAT WAS OLD IS NEW AGAIN
- Browsing antique and collectable
shops is a wonderful way of going
back in time. We are very happy to
welcome Vintage on Broadway a
shop which features, antiques,
replicas, country furniture, great gifts
and accessories for the home
located at 325 Broadway. The
proprietors are lifetime residents of
Bethpage, Rene and John Pufahl.
This is another reason to visit our
down town. We are looking forward
to a program in May when Rene and
John will share their memories of
growing up in Bethpage, finding it a
great place to raise their family and
now they have brightened our
Broadway with their shop.
IRAQ IMPACTS BETHPAGE - 1
was pleased with the interest many
expressed about how Major Michael
McCaffrey, 1st Infantry Division ( Big
Red 1) currently stationed in Tikrit,
Iraq is doing. I do have the article that
appeared in our local Bethpage
Tribune, and with Mary McCaffrey's
permission, I will share how Michael
celebrated Christmas and his views
at that time.
The elections are still on track,
and right now, it's a race to see how
well we can prepare the Iraqi security
forces for the big event. The Shia
and Kurds are getting organized and
will participate. It's the Sunnis who
used to be in power, butare now a
minority who are causing most
disruptions. That's why most of the
attacks lately are in Sunni places like
Mosul, Fallujah, Bayji and no longer
in Shiite places like Najaf or Sadr
City. The enemy is constantly
hoping to take advantage where
they can. They will probably try to
build on their successful attack on
us in Mosul to keep up the pressure,
but most of their attacks here still
target the Iraqis working in the
Interim Government. Still amazes me
that the Iraqis continue to dedicate
themselves to building a new
country.
Last week, the priest who said
Mass was a Maronite who is here
from Hah- vahd doing his dissertation
on the military Muslim clergy. Great,
great Mass. To me, you know they're
good when you walk out kicking all
new thoughts and ideas around in
your head.
Went to Midnight Mass in
Saddam's movie theater, nice
service, big crowd. After Mass I went
to a Lutheran service. It was held at
the site of the ancient ruins of a
Christian Church built in the 3rd
Century. The service was by
candlelight. We sang and they had a
local woman recite the Our Father in
Aramaic.
I suppose I should temper all this
in the spirit of the season. Suffice it
to say that we are all dedicated to the
mission over here, and although it
doesn't seem to have the news
reaction back home, we take pride jn
the fact that we are keeping the
terrorists away from our families and
homes. The soldiers here do a
tremendous job every day, but we all
look forward to getting back home,
knowing that your support and love
will be there to greet us.
You can be very proud of the
work that is going on in trying to
change this place into something
decent for families and communities
where people can live in peace.
Really brings it all home about
religion where you see true evil, and
there is no other word for what they
do, every day, up close.
Christmas is a time of hope for a
better future through God's real
presence here. There may be
darkness, pain and suffering on the
road ahead, but everything will be
fine. So have faith that this will work
out for the best, and I'll see you
soon. Merry Christmas and God
Bless, Mike.
As I have stated before, history is
being made every day and it is
important to document it. Mike
McCaffrey grew up in Bethpage and
is now serving his country in a
foreign land, and the Bethpage
community is very proud of our local
boy with good hometown values
and we pray for those values to carry
him through.

LaSalle Corner
" An Ice Cream Social, sponsored by the Parent's Association
of St. John Baptist de LaSalle Regional School in Farmingdale,
was held so that the parents of the children new to the school
could mingle with moms and dads who have been part of the
LaSalle family for a while. Also on hand for the event was the
principal, Mrs. Ceccarini, and some faculty and staff members.
Everyone, especially the children who came, thoroughly
enjoyed themselves. The ice cream and fixings for the sundaes
were donated by Mr. and Mrs. Alloca, who were also kind
enough to serve all the families who attended. Please visit our
website, www. lasalleregional. org, to see all the other
wonderful things taking place at LaSalle."
" Would you like to be " Principal for a Day?" That was the
question asked of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade
students at St. John Baptist de LaSalle Regional School in
Farmingdale. They answered the question in essay form. The
winner was sixth grader, Brianna Kilkenny and she spent one
who day assisting Mrs. Elizabeth Ceccarini, the real Principal of
LaSalle. Mrs. Ceccarini was happy to have Brianna with her all
day and was very impressed with her professionalism, both in
manner and dress."

Bethpage High School Italian
Feast on March 18
The Bethpage Cross Country team with their Division
Championship Award: Pictured ( left- right) Jim Miller ( Coach),

( All- Division), Scott Bickard ( All- Conference), Brian McGrath
( All- Conference), Jeffrey Katz, and Mike Hosford ( All-
Conference). Missing from picture is Joe Chester, Jennifer
Casey, Erica Giglio, and Christine Wilder.
There are many traditions at
Bethpage High School. There's
Homecoming, which not only
attracts students and community
members alike, but graduates from
years past who return to share in the
school spirit. One can't overlook the
Golden Eagles football team, which
over the years has established a
winning tradition on the gridiron.
And there's yet another tradition that
brings people back to Bethpage
High School: The Italian Feast.
This year, the feast will be held
on Friday, March 18, 2005, during
school hours. There is no fee,
however donations are appreciated
and will be used for Bethpage
student scholarships. Every year,
Bethpage High School Italian
students and students in the Italian
Society help prepare a smorgasbord
of delicious antipasto, entrees, and
desserts for the entire school
community to enjoy. Students also
decorate the auxiliary gymnasium
with images of Italy.
All of the delightful tastes of Italy
are captured for this one day at
Bethpage High School. The
tradition has been going strong for
more than 30 years, thanks to Italian
teacher Signore Maio. The
Bethpage feast is held in
recognition of the Feast of St.
Joseph, an annual tradition in Italy.
