Bethpage Students Use
Their Talents to Pay Tribute to a
Different Kind of Hero
The Bethpage PTA Reflections
Committee recently recognized the
efforts of secondary students who
participated in the National
Reflections contest. The
Reflections program enhances art
education and celebrates student
contributions in the areas of
literature, art, photography, and
music. This year, students were
asked to create a project following
the theme " A Different Kind of
Hero."
Reflections has encouraged
millions of students across the
nation and overseas to create works
of art. Colorado PTA President Mary
Lou Anderson started the program
in 1969. Students participate in the
Reflections program by submitting
entries to their local PTA or PTSA.
Any PTA/ PTSA in good standing is
eligible to sponsor a Reflections
Program.

talented pianist Eleni Traganas who

Carnegie Hall, will be at the library to
present a program entitled ' The
Post- Romantic Composers of
Imperial Russia." In the music
centers of Moscow and St.
Petersburg during the final years of

composers reflected an atmosphere
brimming with the turmoil and
mysticism of the age. Scriabin, the
musical philosopher and
revolutionary visionary and
Rachmaninoff, the conservative
stabilizing force represent a clash of
ideals with coincides with the
downfall of an established order.
Music of these and other
composers, including Tchaikovsky
will be featured as Traganas

an unusual slide show that ties the
fate of the Imperial family to the lives
of these musicians.

New Law Requires Proper
Restraint System For
Children 7 and Under
A new law requiring children
aged four to seven who are 4' 9" tall
or less to use booster seats or other
appropriate child restraint systems
will come into effect this spring, -
according to Oyster Bay Town
Supervisor John Venditto. .
" Governor George Pataki's
signing of this law, which takes
effect March 27, makes New York
one of 28 states who are instituting
laws to address the transportation
needs of older children," Supervisor
Venditto said. " Many people don't
realize that motor vehicle crashes
are a leading cause of death and
hospitalization for children in this
age group in New York State."
The Supervisor noted that data
collected by the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration
( NHTSA) found that nearly 3,300
children ages four to seven died in
motor vehicle crashes in the United
States between 1994 and 2002; 79
of those deaths occurred in New
York State.
While the new law requires
children under seven be in booster
seats, the NHTSA recommends that
children use them, or other
appropriate child safety restraints,
until they are at least eight years old
or 4' 9" tall.
" Once a child is 4' 9" they should
be able to comfortably fit in the back
seat of a vehicle," Supervisor
Venditto said, noting that is the first
item in a five- step test
recommended by the " Boosters Are
For Big Kids" program and
SafetyBeltSafe USA to see if your
child needs a booster seat.
" Children should be able to sit all the
way back against the seat, with their
knees bent comfortably at the edge
of the seat. The seat belt should
cross the child's shoulder between
the neck and arm, and the lap belt
should be able to lay as low as
possible, touching the child's
thighs. Children should be able to sit
in this position for the whole trip."
According to Supervisor
Venditto, the Governor's Traffic
_ 5iLLatyjQQrn_ mittge_ Qffersjhe
following additional facts about
booster seats:
• Booster seats, like child safety
seats, must be put in your vehicle
correctly. Always read instructions
and your vehicle owner's manual
before installing a booster seat.
Parents and caregivers are
encouraged to go to a permanent
fitting station or child safety seat
check event in their community to
ensure their child's seat is properly
installed.
• Never place the shoulder belt
under the child's arm or behind the
back because it eliminates the
protection for the upper part of the
body and increases the risk or
severe injury in a crash.
• For maximum protection, keep
your child in a child safety seat with
full harness as long as he/ she fits in
the seat. Follow the child safety seat
manufacturer's instructions for best
fit.
• Booster seats make traveling in
vehicles more comfortable for your
child because the shoulder belt isn't
hitting your child's neck and he or
she sits up higher and can see out
the window better.
The Supervisor added that two
types of booster seats are available,
a high- back belt- positioning booster
seat and a no- back belt- positioning
" booster seat. Additional information
about booster seats can be found at
websites for the Governor's Traffic
Safety Committee
( www. safeny. com), the National
Automobile Dealer's Association
( www. nada. org) and NHTSA
( www. nhtsa. dot. gov).
" Booster seats have proven, in
various studies, to increase the
safety of children riding in motor
vehicles," Supervisor Venditto said.
" More importantly, they have also
proven to save the lives of
youngsters, and I can think of
nothing more important than the
safety of our children. Please be
sure to have the proper child
restraint system in your cars not only
for the comfort of your children, but
Jo_ e^ su/ e their safety."
Board to Consider Increasing Tax Exemption For Firefighters and EMTs
Volunteer firefighters and EMTs
in the Town of Oyster Bay can soon
look forward to a larger property tax
exemption under an amendment to
the tax exemption law that will be the
subject of a Tuesday, March 22,
public hearing by the Oyster Bay
Town Board, it was announced by
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John
Venditto.
" On December 17, 2002, shortly
after the State Legislature
authorized taxing jurisdictions to
offera special property tax
exemption for volunteer firefighters
and ambulance workers with at least
five years of experience, the Town
Board approved legislation to
provide the exemption to eligible
volunteer firefighters and
ambulance workers in the Town,"
Supervisor Venditto explained.
" Under the exemption, eligible
firefighters and ambulance workers
could receive a 10 percent
reduction in the assessed value of
their property providing it did not
exceed $ 3,000 dollars multiplied by
the latest State equalization rate.
The State has now removed the
$ 3,000 multiplier and capped the
exemption at 10 percent. This will
increase the exemption significantly
for most members."
The Supervisor went on to say
that qualifying applicants will still
have to meet certain qualifications,
which include having at least five
years of service and owning a
primary residence in the community
where he or she is enrolled as a
volunteer firefighter or ambulance
worker. He estimated that there are
about 2,000 volunteer firefighters
and ambulance workers in the Town,
although all are not property owners.
He added that the exemption will
apply only to the Town portion of the
tax bill.
" Our volunteer firefighters and
ambulance workers provide
invaluable services to our
communities on a daily basis,"
Supervisor Venditto stated.
" Whether it is a fire or health
emergency, when residents call,
they know that dedicated firefighters
and ambulance workers will
respond. This proposed change will,
hopefully, help retain members and
help in recruiting new volunteers."
Supervisor Venditto added that
the hearing will be held in the
Hearing Room of Town Hall North,
54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay,
beginning at 7: 00 p. m. Following
the regular Town business, the
Town Board will be available to listen
to public comment on any subject.

Section of Route 25 Renamed
For the Submarine Veterans
Bill Beach of Bethpage,
Commander of the United States
Submarine Veterans - Long Island
Base recently was instrumental in
getting a section of NY State Route
25, in Suffolk County, renamed for
the Submarine Veterans.
When he became a member of
the U. S. Submarine Veterans he
became aware that Long Island
played a significant role in tha
formation of the United States Navy
Submarine Force, known as the
" Silent Service." This was
evidenced by the fact that the First
United States Submarine Base was
established in New Suffolk, Suffolk
County on April 11,1900 by John P.
Holland, an Irish Immigrant School
Teacher from Paterson, N. J. The
submersible boats that he
constructed were tested in the deep
waters of Peconic Bay, off New
Suffolk. Holland's first six ( 6)
Submarines were purchased by the
United States Navy and were the
nucleus of the present day Nuclear
Submarine Force that protects the
interests of the United States
throughout the world.
Getting the Highway designation
took a long and concerted effort by
the members of Long Island Base,
who after many frustrations brought
this project to the attention of N. Y.
State Senator Owen H. Johnson -
Babylon, Kenneth P. LaValle -
Selden and Assemblywoman
Patricia Accompora - Riverhead.
Through the efforts of the
aforementioned Legislators the
appropriate State Legislation was
passed and that portion of Route 25
from New Suffolk Ave. in Mattituck
and New Suffolk Rd. in Cutchogue
was officially renamed " The United
States Submarine Veterans
Memorial Highway."
At the official dedication
Commander Beach stated " the
designation was sought to honor,
the Memory of all U. S. Navy Sailors
who served in the " Silent Service,"
aboard United States Submarines,
from 1900 to the present day " Nuke
Boat" Sailors, who are out there
under the Oceans of the World
protecting our Country, our way of
life and our Freedom." He also
conveyed the thanks and
appreciation of the Submarine
Veterans to the aforementioned
Legislators who brought this Honor
to fruition.
The Submarine Veterans
presence on Long Island is further
evidenced by their model
Submarine, which has been seen,
by many, in numerous Parades and
Fairs on Long Island and throughout
the Eastern Seaboard. This 26 foot
Model Submarine, which was built
by members of Long Island Base
and has appeared in the last three
( 3) St. Patrick's Day parades in
Bethpage, is an exact 1/ 12th scale
model of a Diesel powered
Submarine that served in the US
Navy Pacific Fleet Submarine Force
during World War 2 and made its
G?
presence felt by the Japanese
Imperial Navy. The USS Spadefish
SS 411 was one of several U. S.
Submarines that, in 1944, sneaked
through a Japanese Mine Field into
the Sea Of Japan and wreaked
havoc upon the Japanese Navy by
sinking six ( 6) vessels before the
Japanese realized they were there.
Al LaRocca of Bethpage served
aboard the " Spadefish" during its
escapade into the Sea of Japan.
Membership in the U. S.
Submarine Veterans is open to all
United States Navy Veterans who
are qualified in Submarines.
Membership information may be
obtained by writing to U. S.
Submarine Veterans - Long Island

Jump Rope For Heart at CBS
On Thursday, February 17,
Central Boulevard held its annual
Jump Rope for Heart Event. There
were many beneficial changes this
year. The hour- long event was held
after school and students picked
their own teams of five. There were
many faculty members who helped
assist with the event and there was
even a team of teachers who
jumped alongside the children.
There were over 140 donations and
127 jumpers. Together, the faculty,
staff and students raised over
$ 3,500 to donate to the American
Heart Association.
Larry Pyser, a representative for
the American Heart Association,
started the event with a story about a
young boy who recently had heart
surgery. He thanked the participants
for helping to raise money for
research and technology to fight
heart disease. The jumping goal was
to have every team have a
representative jumping for 20
minutes. There were also 10
different jumping contests followed
by another team jump relay. The
event was extremely successful and
there was nothing but enthusiasm
shown by all. The event was a
wonderful culmination of the three-week
fitness/ jumping unit. Mr.
Braglia and Mrs. Agovino want to
thank all of the faculty, staff,
students and families of Central
Boulevard for their support and
generosity.

Central Park Historical Society
( Continued from last week)
9/ 11 REMEMBERED- The
Central Park Historical Society is
proud of its member, and nice to
Bob and Ann Albertson, architect
Patricia O'Neill. Patricia's design for a
9/ 11 memorial to honor the people
of Long Island was chosen to be
built on seven acres at the campus
of Farmingdale State University of
New York. The site was chosen for
this memorial as it straddles both
Nassau and Suffolk County. Her
winning design was unveiled at a
ceremony at the Universities,
Roosevelt Hall, on January 11.
There will be a 12' piece of steel
from ground zero which will stand in
the center of the memorial which
was donated by the Widows and
Victims' Families Association.
Pat lived through the terror of
that day as her husband, Tom,
worked on the 60th floor for Morgan
Stanley, fortunately he survived the
attack. The minutes to hours of that
day are locked in ones memory and
this gave Pat the opportunity to put
her entire being into this project.
She realized the emotion of that day
and had the talent to tell the story.
Her story features a time line to
illustrate the events and the people
of September 11.
The memorial will acknowledge
each tragic minute of that day from
the take off of the first plane from
Logan International Airport in
Boston to the collapse of 7 World
Trade Center in Manhattan. There
will be a total of 560 limestone
pavers acknowledging each long
minute.
There will be a memorial garden
with a fountain in the center which is
to be lined with pebbles from Long
Island beaches. There will be a
mosaic paving which will signify the
joining of many shattered pieces
enabling a beautiful design to
emerge. A tribute to the firefighters,
police officers and volunteers will be
acknowledged with separate
monuments.
The rectangular reflecting pool
edged in limestone with the name,
age and hometown of all 343 Long
Island victims of the attack. Upon
peering into the pool there will be an
image of Long Island visible beneath
the water.
There will be a place to sit and
meditate. All in an effort as Pat said,
" to honor those who died, reflect on
the survivors, and to celebrate the
many who came to the aid of others,
and never to lose the details of that
day."
The second phase of this project
will include the renovating of
Farmingdale State's historic Cutler
Hall as a resource center for family
members, survivors and anyone
seeking information about
September 11 and its aftermath.
CONDOLENCES - The Central
Park Historical Society is saddened
to learn of the passing of our
member, Dick Rode. Dick will be
remembered, by our members, for
the interesting slide presentation he
shared with our society. Dick's
collection of slides of Bethpage,
from 1976 including the great
Bicentennial Celebration is a
wonderful documentation of our
town during this time. His collection
of slides is truly a treasure.
We extend our sympathy to his
wife Dorothy, family and friends.
The Albertson family and The
Central Park Historical Society are
saddened with the passing of our
member, Eugene Albertson. Gene
grew up in Central Park/ Bethpage,
attended Powell Ave. School,
confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran
Church, and attended Farmingdale
High School where he excelled on
the basketball court and the baseball
diamond, at the same time was
considered " a really nice guy."
World War II created a manpower
shortage in the Bethpage Fire
Department, and at the age of 16
Gene, as well as, Eddie Cava,
Eugene Sengstacken, Howie
Benkert, and John Razzini was
asked to join the volunteers and
serve their community. Which he
proudly did while he attended high
school. Then upon completing high
school Gene joined the Navy. When
he came home, he joined the
Benkert Bus Company and drove a
school bus before a career with the
Grumman Corp. He also resumed his
position as a volunteer in the
Bethpage Fire Department and rose
through the ranks to become Chief
of the Fire Department. At that time,
he was the first chief whose father
also held that position.
He moved to Florida with his wife
Dotty, and he continued to work for
Grumman in Stuart, and became
active in the Elks Club. In 1985 his
loving wife Dotty lost her battle with
cancer. Gene was blessed the 2nd
time and married a lovely lady, Fran.
We extend our love and support to
her and her family. Gene will be truly
missed by his daughter, Jeanne
Hance, her children, and her
grandchildren, his son, Edward, his
brother Bob and family, the Starke
and Rafenski cousins, as well as,
Dotty's family and his many friends.

Bethpage Students Connect
Through Technology
Kramer Lane Holds Physical
Education Demonstration
• J1': - w
The Physical Education Department at Kramer Lane School
hosted their annual Physical Education Demonstration on
March 4 and March 7, 2005. The fifth grade students and their
teachers - Mrs. Gaffney, Ms. Dunn and Mr. Perez - put on two
outstanding performances that demonstrated a variety of
physical skills, cardiovascular endurance and teamwork. Some
of the activities included a step aerobic routine, paddleball,
basketball, scoop lacrosse and apache races. Under the
direction of the Physical Education Teachers, Mrs. Terc and Mr.
Zito, the students worked extremely hard in preparing for the
show and in the end it all paid off.
Students in Carol Russo's class at Campagne Elementary
School ( seen here) conduct a videoconference with students
in Jeremey Indenbaum's class at JFK Middle School.
Three seventh grade classes at
JFK Middle School and three fifth
grade classes at Charles Campagne
Elementary School in Bethpage
have been establishing face- to- face
' pen pal' relationships without ever
leaving their respective buildings,
thanks to the Bethpage School
District's videoconferencing
technology.
The JFK social studies classes of
Jeremy Indenbaum, Steve Love,
and Andrea Mastellone have been
communicating with the Campagne
classes of Carol Russo, Kathy Brolly,
and Michele Dellaris through
videoconferencing. The technology
allows for cameras to be set up at
both schools so that each group can
see and hear the other group, live
on a large television ( or projector)
screen, as they engage in real time
conversation. The two schools
recently held their first
videoconference session, where
students in each building asked
questions of their pals on the other
side. Fifth graders asked most of the
questions, including " What is the
hardest subject?", and " How do you
find your way around and get from
one class to another on time?". The
JFK students were more than happy
to provide some helpful advice to
the younger mentees.
The classes will continue to stay
in touch via email and future
videoconferences. The activity will
culminate with a visit by the fifth
graders to the classes of their JFK
friends, scheduled for this spring.
The activity was organized through
the efforts of District Social Worker
Mary Beth Tarrant and the District's
Technology Department.
" Souper" Bowl Continues at CBS
This year the CBS students,
faculty and staff donated 377 cans
of different variety soups to a local
soup kitchen. This is the third year of
the " souper" bowl and each year it
gets bigger. Ms. Soviero, Mrs.
Agovino and Mr. Braglia wish to
thank all who participated.
