Upcoming Afternoon Programs
The Bethpage Public Library
presents a varied and interesting
roster of afternoon programs on a
continuing basis at the library. Mark
the following dates on your calendar
and plan to attend. Admission is free
and everyone is welcome to attend.
On Thursday, April 7 at 2: 00 P. M.
music historian Frank P. Carbonara
will be at the library with a fascinating
program entitled " What Happens in
Tosca." Puccini's opera Tosca is set
in Napoleonic times and includes
political overtones. It adapts a
French play by Sardou to achieve a
taut, brilliant, blood and thunder
melodrama in which Puccini's
melodic gift and sense of theater are
at their peak. The opera will be
examined act by act from its
Wagnerian motifs to its symbolism
and details of the musical and
dramatic structure.
Dr. Michael D'lnnocenzo,
Professor of History at Hofstra will be
at the library on Tuesday, April 12 at
2: 00 P. M. with " A Portrait of
Abraham Lincoln." Lincoln is widely
regarded as one of the truly great
men of all time. He is credited with
saving the Union and immortalized
by his visions as set forth in his
Emancipation Proclamation and his
Gettysburg Address. The program
will address the questions of
whether after 15p years he
deserves his rating as our greatest
president, how effective was he as a
war leader, a Reconstruction peace
maker, a dealer with race issues and
a champion of democracy. Did his
personal life affect his public
conduct and how different would
history have been if Booth's bullet
had missed its mark. Abe Lincoln will
be reexamined as man and myth.
With visual aids.
Then save Thursday, April 14 at
2: 00 P. M. with a program entitled
" Passport to Discover Peru"
presented by Shirley Blanc
Romaine, Actress & TV personality
as part of the library's PASSPORTS
travel series. Discover this land of
contrasts, great beauty, long history
and ethnic diversity within its large
cities, Spanish colonial towns, the
snow- capped Andes and coastal
deserts.

To celebrate National Library
Week the Bethpage public Library is
pleased to present as part of its
BOOKBEAT programming on
Friday, April 15 at 2: 00 P. M., Fran
Cohen, Bcok Reviewer, Lecturer,
TV Personality with a fascinating and
informative program entitled
" Spotlight on Prize- Winning Author
William Styron."
William Styron ( 1925-) is a leading
American author of his generation.
His thought- provoking work is epic
in sweep and depth. Like his chief
mentor, William Faulkner, he has
grappled with some of the most
harrowing events and unresolved
moral questions of our time. His
fiction combines an interest in
history with an examination of the
fundamental needs of a healthy
society. Winning numerous awards,
including the Pulitzer Prize for The
Confessions of Nat Turner and the
American Book Award for Sophie's
Choice, Styron has generated both
praise and controversy over the past
50 years. Darkness Visible is a
memorable, personal account of his
depression. Styron dramatically
depicts the mind and heart of
contemporary society and the
program will offer a fascinating,
insightful exploration of his life and
work.
Fran Cohen has been
highlighted many times in Ms
Magazine, Newsday, on Talk Radio
and in Long Island Woman. Her well-researched
programs have brought
books to life in many cultural
institutions throughout the N. Y.
Metropolitan Area, North America
and Mexico as well.

Still Time To Nominate
' Kids of Distinction9
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
John Venditto and Kids Helping
Kids by Kids Way, Inc. Founder
Robert AJ Eslick remind residents
that there is still time to nominate
exceptional young people for the
' Kids of Distinction' program.
Winners will be selected next month
and residents are encouraged to
submit their nominations before the
April 1 deadline.
' The ' Kids of Distinction' Program
is geared towards recognizing
activities done on the nominee's
own initiative," Robert Eslick said.
" We are looking to recognize young
people who have participated in
activities for the benefit of their
community or neighborhood,
outside of any school- related
activities."
Nominees will be placed in two
categories, children currently in fifth
through eighth grade and children in
grades nine through 12. Up to three
winners will be selected in each
category by a six- member
committee. The age groups were
established so nominees can be
evaluated fairly against their peers.
' There are so many wonderful
young people living in the Town of
Oyster Bay who not only
demonstrate academic or
extracurricular skills, but also do a
little something extra to help make
the world a better place," Supervisor
Venditto said. " We felt it was
important to recognize our young
residents who involve themselves in
voluntary community or civic
activities on their own individual
initiative whether it be helping out a
handicapped or elderly neighbor,
volunteering at a local hospital, or
working with children with special
needs or disabilities, these fine
youngsters now have the
opportunity to be recognized at a
special ceremony being planned for
the spring."
Anyone who wishes to submit a
nomination should fill out a
nominating form and submit it to
Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc.,
prior to the April 1, 2005, deadline.
Nominating forms can be obtained at
Town Halls North ( Oyster Bay) and
South ( Massapequa), as well as at
local libraries throughout the Town.
Nominating forms can also be found
on the Town's Web site,
www. oysterbaytown. com. Winners
will be recognized at a May meeting
of the Oyster Bay Town Board and
will be presented with a plaque and
$ 500 scholarship from Kids Helping
Kids. Anybody who would like more
information about the program is
welcome to call Kids Helping Kids at
249- 9449.
' There are many young
individuals who have contributed to
the great quality of life we enjoy here
in the Town of Oyster Bay,"
Supervisor Venditto said. ' They
now have the opportunity to be
recognized for their outstanding
achievements and will surely stand
as role models for their peers."

The Town of Oyster Bay
Department of Community & Youth
Services, Cultural & performing Arts
Division, is hosting five
" Distinguished Artists" concerts
throughout April, according to Town
Councilman Angelo A. Delligatti.
On Sunday, April 3, beginning at
2: 00 p. m., the Island Chamber
Symphony will perform at the
Farmingdale Public Library, 116
Merritts Road in Farmingdale.
" Conducted by Jeremy
Kempton, the Island Chamber
Symphony presents concerts of
master works for small and full
orchestra to audiences across Long
Island and throughout the
metropolitan area," Councilman
Delligatti said. ' This orchestra
consists of approximately 30 of the
Island's finest musicians."
On Sunday, April 10, the
Nepenthe Chamber Ensemble will
perform at the Locust Valley Library,
170 Buckram Road, beginning at
2: 00 p. m.
" This fine combination of piano,
violin and cello players will perform
beautiful pieces by Mozart, Strauss
and Schumann," the Councilman
said. ' Their name comes from
Homer's Odyssey, which said
nepenthe was a remedy that eased
pain and brought forgetfulness of
sorrow."
Also on Sunday, April 10, the
Bethpage Public Library will host the
New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players'
" Wand'ring Minstrels" at 2: 00 p. m.
The Bethpage Library is located at
47 Powell Avenue in Bethpage.
The W a n i n g Minstrels are

Sunday, April 16 brings the

How to Avoid Late
Tax Payment Penalties
Oyster Bay Town Receiver of
Taxes James J. Stefanich reminds
residential property owners that it is
essential and mandatory to notify his
office upon satisfying their
mortgage.
In addition, Mr. Stefanich
encourages residents who recently
purchased a home, condominium or
co- op unit, or just refinanced or
transferred the mortgage on their
property, to be sure that notification
in writing is sent to James J.
Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes, Town
of Oyster Bay, 74 Audrey Avenue,
Oyster Bay, NY 11771- 1539.
' This will ensure that tax bills are
received promptly by the
homeowner," Mr.; Stefanich said. " A
homeowner relying on a bank or
mortgage company to notify the tax
office may find there is a delay in
billing the homeowner directly,

case of condominiums, the building

First Homeowners Cleanup
Scheduled For April 9
The first of eight Homeowners
Cleanup programs for Oyster Bay
Town residents will take place on
Saturday, April 9, according to Town
Councilwoman Rose Marie Walker.
" Residents only ( no businesses)
in the Town's Solid Waste Disposal
District may take unwanted rubbish
to the Town's Solid Waste Disposal
Complex, Bethpage- Sweet Hollow
Road, Old Bethpage, from 8: 30 a. m.
to 4 p. m.," Councilwoman Walker
said. " Bushes, tree limbs, fence
posts and similar items will be
accepted as is and need not be
broken into smaller pieces. Used
tires, large metal items in excess of
four feet, yard waste, clean fill and
clean broken concrete will also be
accepted. Only 4- wheel vehicles will
be allowed into the complex. Proof
of residency must be shown.
" For many people, when the
cleaning urge hits, they just want to
get rid of the rubbish as soon as
possible and not have to look at it
until the next collection day. If you're
one of those people, a
Homeowners Cleanup day might be
just the catalyst you need to tackle
that garage or basement cleanup
you've been putting off."
Councilwoman Walker noted that
additional Homeowners Cleanup
dates are: Saturday, May 7;
Saturday, June 11; Saturday, July
23; Saturday, August 13; Saturday,
September 24; Sunday, October
23; and Saturday, November 5.
Residents can call 677- 5853 if they
have any questions.

Stefanich explained. " After the 40
days, a one percent penalty is
added for each month the tax
remains unpaid, retroactive to April
1st."
Residents can pay in person, by
either cash or check, at the Tax
Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall West,
74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, or

Industry Water Group
A Bethpage resident for 28
years, Ken Claus, who works as
Village of Freeport Water
Superintendent, was recently
selected by his peers in the drinking
water industry to serve as 2005
secretary of the Long Island Water
Conference. It is a professional
association of Nassau- Suffolk's

With more than 14 years as an
active member of the LIWC, Claus

organization's mission to provide
Long Island's 2.7 million residents
with a safe and abundant public
drinking water supply. Programs
include providing educational
workshops for members,
establishing public outreach
programs and contact with
lawmakers regarding county, state
and federal issues that affect
Nassau- Suffolk's drinking water. The
conference also advocates
educating consumers about water
conservation and groundwater
protection.
Prior to joining the Freeport
Village Department of Water as
superintendent in 2001, he served
for 27 years with the Plainview Water
District. A graduate of SUNY
Farmingdale with an Associate's

2.7 million people.
Long Island's drinking water is
drawn from underground aquifers,
located far below the earth's surface,
by more than 1,000 deep wells and
delivered by water utilities through a
total of 10,800 miles of water mains.

In District elementary schools,
results on the Grade 4 Math

" As State Education Department

Superintendent of Schools Dr.

The Bethpage Board of
Education and administration
recently took a tour of JFK Middle
School's state- of- the- art ScanTEK
Technology Lab. The lab,
purchased with funding from the
2000 facilities improvement bond,
provides students with the
opportunity to gain valuable
experience with equipment that is
used in a variety of industries today.
Inside the ScanTEK lab,
students rotate through a series of
modules ( for which they are
introduced over the course of
seventh and eighth grades) that
allow them to create different
projects related to physical science
and technology. Students learn
about motion, electricity,
magnetism, sound, energy, light

and heat. They use equipment
associated with alternative energy,
flight simulation, aerodynamics,
computer- operated mills, electrical
circuitry, robotics and automation,
hydraulics, industrial control, and
laser and fiber optics. Each student
works with a partner to complete a
series of experiments in each field.
During the tour, which was held
prior to the monthly public Board of
Education meeting, students
conducted demonstrations of the
equipment. They also answered
questions by the Board and
administration members related to
the equipment they were using, the
projects they were creating, and
how this would help them determine
if they wanted to pursue a career in a
related field.

the tunes of " Glory, Glory Halleluja,"
the entire school gathered together
for a patriotic moment on March 10,
joining hundreds of other schools
throughout the United States in
celebration of " The National Anthem
Project." The National Anthem
Project is a national campaign led by
educators of the National
Association for Music Education
whose goals are to reacquaint all
Americans with their country's
heritage.
Led by fifth grade student, Olivia
Bologna, who held the flag while
students recited the Pledge of
Allegiance, students, faculty and
Principal Angelita Cintado sang the
lyrics to The Star Spangled Banner
and then marched proudly back to
their classrooms. The elementary
school event was coordinated
through the efforts of Music
Teacher, Brian V. O'Connor who
said the students began practicing
for the event the week before. Mr.
O'Connor pointed out that music
teachers around the country were
asked to help renew national
awareness of American traditions
through singing the country's
national anthem.
" According to a recent Harris poll,
only one third of all Americans know
the national anthem and 70 percent
said they learned it in the
classroom," Mr. O'Connor said. " The
significance of this event is to teach
children about patriotism by learning
patriotic songs - wewant to keep
patriotic tradition alive."
Principal Cintado said that the
teachers in grades kindergarten
through two are teaching about the
significance of the flag and the
national an+ hem by using a book
entitled The Star Spangled Banner,
by Peter Spier. The book touches
on an important part of history and
shows the significance of the song
The Star Spangled Banner.
" It's important to teach children
respect and to be patriotic citizens,"
Mrs. Cintado said. ' They should
know what the symbol of the flag
means and that we have many
freedoms, including the freedom to
pledge and to be patriotic. It's also a
reminder of those who are fighting
for us now."
The National Association for
Music Education appointed First
Lady Laura Bush as the chairperson
for the National Anthem Project
campaign. The goals of the
campaign are to spotlight the
important role that music education
plays in giving all Americans a
patriotic voice. Additional
information about The National
Anthem Project can be found by
visiting the website,

Bethpage School's to Participate in
Island Harvest's
2005 Coin Harvest
Bethpage, New York - March 15,
2005 - Charles Campagne
Elementary School and Bethpage
High School, both located in
Bethpage, NY will participate in the
2005 Annual Coin Harvest to benefit
Island Harvest, Long Island's Source
Authority on Food Rescue. Charles
Campagne Elementary School and
Bethpage High School are one of
more than 60 schools across Long
Island that will participate in the 7th
annual hunger awareness coin drive
which supports Island Harvest's food
collection, education and
distribution programs.
Schools elect a two- week period
between February and May for their
campaign drives. Students who
participate receive brown paper
bags, the universal symbol of the
school lunch, in which to collect
coins from family and friends. In
addition to posters, fliers and 5-
gallon collection drums, Island
Harvest provides schools with a
nutrition fact label and other
educational materials that can be
incorporated into a hunger
awareness curriculum. Island
Harvest's Coin Harvest Speakers
Bureau may also visit the school to
speak to the students about hunger
on Long Island, nutrition and the
importance of helping others in
need. At the close of the campaign,
Island Harvest will tally the donations
and reward the students of the top
three schools who have made the
largest contribution.
' The brown paper bags remind
us that not everyone may be able to
fill a lunch bag every day," said Randi
Shubin Dresner, Executive Director
of Island Harvest. ' The Coin Harvest
campaign not only enables Island
Harvest to. reach children and adults
who are at risk of hunger, but it
provides students with valuable
lessons about fundraising, nutrition
and hunger awareness.
Island Harvest is able to operate
the Coin Harvest at a minimal cost
thanks to the generous support of
corporate sponsors, which include
Canon, Harrison Leifer DiMarco, the
Herald Community Newspapers, NY
Mets, Sunrise Check Cashing,
KeySpan Foundation, UPS and the
Grand Sponsor Arrow Electronics.
Schools wishing to participate in
this year's Coin Harvest may contact
Dee Doherty at ( 516) 294- 8528.
