VOL. 43 NO. 11 April 8- 14, 2005 FIFTY CENTS
This Was No April FooVs Joke
Conway's Stationary Store Victim of Grand Larceny
While most folks were plotting
and planning to play harmless
April Fool's pranks, two men
came to downtown Bethpage with
something quite different in
mind. On Friday, April 1, in the
mid afternoon hours Conway's
Stationary located at 334
Broadway in Bethpage was the
scene of a grand larceny.
The Tribune was told that two
men entered the stationary store,
one from the front of the store
and the other from the rear.
While one man distracted the
employee the other grabbed an
undisclosed amount of cash and
the two fled southbound towards
the L1RR parking lot.
Police were quickly on the
scene and searched the area. In
fact even the Bethpage Tribune
office was searched, as too, were
establishments in the immediate
area of the LIRR parking field.
Both men were described as
being between 50- 60 years old,
both were black, one was
approximately 6' 4" and 300
pounds while the other was
described as being
approximately 250 pounds.
Unfortunately the criminals
were not apprehended and
anyone with any information or
specifics about this case is urged
to contact the eighth precinct at
( 516) 573- 6800.
On a positive note, we are
happy and relieved to report that
no one was injured in this
incident. Conway's Stationary
has been serving the Bethpage
community for many, many years
and it's owners as well as
employees are friendly and
familiar faces to our community.
We all breathed a sigh of
relief when finding out that this
incident happened without any of
our friends over at Conway's
suffering any injury, although we
can only imagine how terrifying
the experience must have been.
WE MOURN THE PASSING
OF
POPE JOHN PA ULII
The world is mourning the death of perhaps a true living Saint
as Pope John Paul 11 passed away on April 2 at 84 years of age.
The People's Pope as he was called was a true man of dignity,
compassion and faith and embraced all people of all faiths and
color. In his 26 years as Pope, John Paul II was the most traveled
pontiff and made visits to Poland, his homeland, China, Cuba, the
United States and many other nations. And on these visits he left
his mark of love and faith to all that were blessed to be in his
presence.
Tens of thousands of praying supporters took to Saint Peter's
Basilica at the Vatican and watched and waited to learn the
outcome of the ailing Pope John Paul II as he battled with
breathing problems, Parkinson's disease and sepsis, which
injected his blood. Yet in the end this wonderful soul died as he
had lived. With dignity and love, with a heart filled with true belief
and faith and with the entire world at his side adoring him.
Pope John Paul II will forever be remembered by the entire
world. A world he was able to embrace with his loving arms.
Carol Walsh, Recipient of the
Women of Distinction Award
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella presents a
citation and commemorative pin to Carol Walsh, RN, recipient of
the Women of Distinction award for 2005 in the category of
health services. Walsh, a resident of Bethpage, was
recognized at the March 22 meeting of the Oyster Bay Town
Board during a special ceremony honoring all eight Women of
Distinction.
Carol Walsh, RN, has been employed at ACLD ( Adults and
Children With Learning and Developmental Disabilities) since
1995. The organization's 2001 Employee of the Year, Ms.
Walsh is a strong advocate for the 3000 disabled consumers
served by ACLD and constantly tries to improve their quality of
life. She goes above and beyond on a daily basis, providing
quality nursing care to each consumer in her program. In
addition to personally structuring the diets for all consumers
and arranging morale- building activities, Ms. Walsh also created
three gardens at the Bethpage program site, which consumers
and staff can enjoy as they commune with nature. She is a role
model for consumers and staff and has achieved the fine
balance of expressing her creative spirit and imparting her
medical expertise day after day at programs. Ms. Walsh relates
to staff and consumers as individuals and always with respect
and dignity. Her sensitivity and capability to empathize with
consumers and staff are evident to those who have the
privilege of working with her.

Witness for the Prosecution
Agatha Christie's " Witness for the
Prosecution" is playing at The Stage
Theatre from April 16th through May
15th. Fridays and Saturdays
performances start at 8: 30 pm and
Sundays at 3: 00 pm with one
performance on Thursday, April
28th which starts at 8: 00 pm. Tickets
are $ 16.00. Senior Citizens and
students $ 12.00 for Friday and
Sunday shows.
Only Agatha Christie could have
conceived such a suspenseful
thriller and then capped it with an
uncanny triple flip- ending. A man is
accused of murdering a wealthy
widow whom he had befriended and
his wife refuses to corroborate his
alibi for the night of the murder.
The genius of the play is in its
believable but completely
unexpected twists, leading to one
last minute event that is particularly
shocking and very well played by the
cast.
It is definitely one of the classic
courtroom dramas of all time. Christie
dares you to guess the ending but
the odds are overwhelmingly against
you. The ending is highly
imaginative and completely
unexpected. A superb thriller.

Hewlett Avenue, Merrick, NY 11566

Anna Goidel, Recipient of the
Women of Distinction Award
Oyster Bay Town Clerk Steve Labriola presents a citation
and commemorative pin to Anna Goidel, recipient of the
Women of Distinction award for 2005 in the category of
community and civic affairs. Goidel, a resident of Plainview, was
recognized at the March 22 meeting of the Oyster Bay Town
Board during a special ceremony honoring all eight Women of
Distinction.
A Plainview resident for over 50 years, Anna Goidel's
dedication to the community began when her two sons were of
school age. She became active in the PTA as a class mother,
later moving on to become vice president at the junior high
school and twice serving as president at the high school. Ms.
Goidel is a former employee of the Plainview- Old Bethpage
School District, where she devoted her career to teaching
English to high school juniors and seniors. After her
retirement, she was quickly elected to the board of education,
where she served for nine years. At that time she also became
active in ORT and has volunteered in the Woodbury chapter,
where she is now president. Most recently, Ms. Goidel
conceptualized and proposed a Friends of the Library
organization to support the community's library. She has led
the organization as co- chairperson for the past eight years.
Legislators Agree on Compromise
to Approve 2005 Capital Plan
Nassau County Legislator
Edward P. Mangano ( R- Bethpage)
recently approved a compromised
version of the 2005 Capital Plan.
The compromise will allow the
County to commence with projects
that will improve infrastructure such
as roadways and buildings. In
addition, by approving the plan, the
Legislature gave approval to the
County Executive to commit $ 5
million to purchase an improved
radio communications network for
the Police Department and $ 2.5
million ( which will be matched by the
state) to Nassau County Community
College for upgrades to their
antiquated student registration
system. ' The Community College
will now have the necessary funding
to upgrade their website to allow
students to register over the
internet. The new radio system will
allow greater communication
between patrol cars for increased
safety of our residents and police
officers. The Police Department and
Nassau Community College will
receive necessary resources that
are long overdue," said Legislator
Mangano.
The approval of the Capital Plan
will result in the spending of
approximately $ 96 million this year
on park and road improvements as
well as other capital projects. The
Republican Legislators had refused
to commit to the plan unless the
County Executive eliminated $ 60
million in spending and ensured that
police precincts remained at their
present location. " I am pleased that
we were able to work out a
compromise so work can be started
to improve the County's crumbling
infrastructure. The approval of the
new police radio system and the
upgrades to Nassau Community
College's computer registration
program were too important to be
used as a political issue. My
delegation was committed in making
sure these important items were not
held up due to partisan politics,"
added Legislator Mangano.
The residents of the 17th
Legislative District will directly
benefit from the approval of the
capital plan. Other components to
the plan which include
improvements to roadways in
Nassau which will make for easier
transportation throughout the
County and funding the Nassau
University Medical Center for long
overdue upgrades to the facility and
equipment. ' The approval of the
Capital Plan will greatly benefit the
residents of the 17th Legislative
District and all of Nassau County. In
addition, the compromise that was
agreed upon guarantees that the
2nd and 8th precinct will continue to
serve the residents of fny Legislative
District," added Legislator Mangano.

Breakfast Program
The Bethpage Union Free
School District is in the process of
conducting a survey of parents of
students in kindergarten through
sixth grade who attend the
Bethpage elementary and middle
schools, to determine if there is any
interest in a school breakfast
program. If sufficient interest is
determined, an exemption to
participate in this program will be
requested by the Bethpage Union
Free School District to the New York
State Education Department.
Those parents who have
concerns regarding the survey or
the breakfast program, please
contact Mr. Joseph Marchesiello,
Assistant Superintendent for
Business at 644- 4030.

Manager, announced expanded
service for last minute taxpayers in
the Long Island District. Retail
services, stamp sales and
postmarking will be available until
midnight, Friday, April 15, 2005 at
these selected post offices: Bay
Shore, Roosevelt Field Postal Store
( until 9: 30 pm), Patchogue, Port
Jefferson Station, Riverhead,
Rockville Centre, Roslyn,
Smithtown, Hempstead, Western
Nassau P& DC Window Operation,
Mid- Island Mail Processing Facility
( postmark only).
Locally: Hicksville, 185 West
John Street.
Customers can obtain certified or
registered mail proof of mailing
acceptable to the IRS and acquire a
postmarked mailing receipt. An
electronic return receipt is also
available and it cost 45 cents less
than hard copy. Instead of receiving
a green postcard in the mail signed
by the recipient, customers receive
a proof- of- delivery letter as an e- mail
attachment. The letter includes the
date and time of delivery and an
image of the recipient's signature.
After purchase, customers must visit
usps. com to enter the e- mail
address to which they want their
return receipt ( electronic) sent.
The Postal Service suggests the
following tax mailing tips:
• Make sure you have proper,
postage, especially if you have extra
forms or schedules. The Internal
Revenue Service ( IRS) will not
accept returns without postage or
with insufficient postage. The IRS
returns all insufficient postage to the
sender, who is then charged with
late- payment penalties. It costs 37
cents for the first ounce and 23
cents for each additional ounce.
One ounce is about four pages.
• If you use a non- IRS Labeled
envelope, make sure you have the
proper IRS address. Also, put your
return address in the upper left-hand
corner.
• Mail early in the day if you can,
so you can save yourself a trip to the
late collection locations and avoid
traffic and last- minute rush.
• Don't use an office postage
meter. The IRS doesn't accept
private postmarks as proof of timely
filing.
