Bethpage Post Office Makes Mailing
Quicker, Easier, More Convenient
Customers visiting the Bethpage
Post Office, 339 Hicksville Road can
now experience the Postal Service's
version of the ATM while delivering
quick, easy, and convenient access
to postal services.
" APCs - Automated Postal
Centers - provide easy access to
postal products and services just as
ATMs provide easy access to
banking services," said Mike
Silvestri, Bethpage Postmaster. " To
customers, one is a self- service
bank, while the other is a self- service
Post Office. Unlike many ATMs,
APCs don't add transaction fees."
The Bethpage Post Office lobby
is open from Monday to Friday: 5 am
to 5: 30 pm, Saturday: 5 am to 4: 30
pm. The APC expands customer
access to postal services beyond
traditional retail hours.
" Beyond expanding customer
access, the APC enables our
customers to conduct business with
us at their convenience."
Using credit and debit cards, the
APC enables customers to:
• Buy the same self- adhesive
stamps that are provided throuqh
ATMs.
• Weigh, calculate and purchase
postage in any amount for items
weighing up to 70 lbs.
• Send items via Express Mail,
Priority Mail, First- Class Mail, and
Parcel Post services.
• Look up ZIP Codes and obtain
Postal Service mailing information.
• Obtain Express Mail, Certified
Mail, and Return Receipts.
• Purchase Delivery Confirmation
service.
• Obtain a receipt.
• Insure items up to $ 200.
The APC is just 4 feet high by 3
feet wide. It is located in the post
office next to a convenient parcel
slot that accepts packages up to 12
inches high, 14 inches deep and 20
inches wide.
The APCs will help free retail
associates to assist customers with
face- to- face transactions such as
mailing packages to international
locations, using Registered Mail
service, and purchasing postal
money orders. Passport applications
will continue to be accepted in
person.
Silvestri said the decision to first
place APCs in Post Office lobbies
follows the strategy of the banking
industry.
" Interestingly, many banking
customers, intimidated by the new
ATM technology, still gravitated to
teller lines. Banks eased fears by
placing staff in lobbies to assist
customers with initial transactions.
We're following the same scenario
by having Postal Service employees
assist our customers."
In the past year approximately
2,500 APCs have been installed in
Post Offices across the nation.

Nassau County Legislator
Edward P. Mangano ( R- Bethpage)
and the rest of the Republican
delegation has introduced
legislation that would strengthen
The Sex Offender Registration Act
( SORA), New York State's version of
" Megan's Law." The current New
York State law requires a sex
offender to register with local law
enforcement upon moving into a
community. This proposed
legislation would place information
on sex offenders living within
Nassau County's borders on the
County's website
( www. nassaucountyny. gov). In
addition, parents and concerned
citizens can be notified via email
when a new sex offender moves
into their community.
Recently, the organization,
Parents for Megan's Law, released a
study which graded the 50 states on
the strength of their own " Megan's
Law." New York State received an
" F" rating in their dissemination of
information regarding the
whereabouts of potentially
threatening sexual predators. " The
result of the survey completed by
Parents for Megan's Law showed
me that we need to do a better job
protecting our children," said
Legislator Mangano. Under current
New York State Law, only Level 2
and 3 sex offenders must register
with the police department. It is then
the responsibility of the police
department to notify the school
districts about new offenders in the
area. Parents must then contact the
police department or the New York
State website to obtain information.
The " Megan's Law for Nassau
County" will allow parents and
concerned citizens to obtain the
most information allowed under
current New York State law.
Information on both Level 2 and 3
sex offenders will be available on the
Nassau County website. " Given
today's technology, the current
process of notification is
unacceptable. This law will improve
the process of supplying this vital
information," added Legislator
Mangano.

Be Sure Your Pets Are Safe
This Winter
Since winter is now in full force
with cold weather and snow, it is
important to remember that our pets
are susceptible to winter hazards
just like people. There are
precautions you can take to make
sure your pets remain safe and
healthy throughout the winter
season. Here are some cold weather
tips to keep pets safe:
- Dogs, especially small shorthair
breeds, suffer from the cold despite
their seemingly warm fur coats.
Therefore, it is a good idea to take
your dog outside only as needed.
When you are cold enough to go
inside, they probably are too. For
those times that they are out in the
cold, a sweater may help keep dogs
warm.
- Snow and ice can disguise
outdoor scents and dogs can easily
become lost. More dogs disappear
during the winter than any season,
so it's best not to let your dog off its
leash in snow or ice.
- Cars can become freezing in the
cold weather. It is not a good idea to
leave your pet alone in a car during
the winter season.
- Thoroughly wiping off your pet's
legs and paws after being in the
snow or ice will help prevent them
from ingesting salt and other
chemicals that could be harmful if
swallowed.
- Dogs run a good chance of
catching a cold any time they get
wet, so bathing your dog only when
necessary is a good wintertime
precaution.
- It's generally a good idea to
keep your cat indoors year round,
but especially during the winter
months.
- Keeping warm requires extra
calories so it's a good idea to
increase your pet's supply of food,
particularly protein, to keep fur thick
and healthy through the winter
months. Animals that will be going
outside during the cold weather
need an increased diet to help them
maintain body heat.
- To keep your pets comfortable
at night, make sure they have a warm
place to sleep such as in a basket or
cardboard box with a blanket in it.
Enjoy the winter months with
your pets and keep these tips handy
to ensure their wellbeing.

Bethpage Student Civic Talent Show Raises Funds For
A Good Cause While Honoring an Old Friend
The Bethpage High School
Student Civic Association recently
held its annual Student Talent Show
in the Bethpage High School
auditorium to raise funds for the
Marty Lyons Foundation. This year's
show featured 16 acts, showcasing
students' musical, dance, theatrical,
comedic, and athletic talents.
The 2005 Student Talent Show
was dedicated to the memory of
Richard Furrey, a long- time resident
and community leader who touched
the lives of so many people. Mr.
Furrey, who worked as a pharmacist
at the Bethpage CVS, recently
passed away. He served as Rotary
Club president and supported many
Student Civic Association
endeavors. Every year, without fail,
Mr. Furrey would give his time and
energy to the Marty Lyons
Foundation and play a jolly Santa
Claus for their holiday party.
To honor Rich Furrey's
commitment to the Marty Lyons
Foundation, the 2005 Talent Show
raised more than $ 1200 in proceeds
that were donated to the
Foundation in his name. The Marty
Lyons Foundation, named after and
run by the great former New York Jet
defensive lineman, is a nonprofit
organization that helps grant the
wishes of terminally ill children. Mr.
Lyons served as a judge for the
talent show. Joining him on the
judges' panel were former New York
Jets John Nitti and Ken Schroy,
actor and rapper Shortee Redd,
music producer Clint Berry,
musicians Marco and Tim Connelly,
comedian Wileek, members of the
band Hijinx, and Mike Reich, a
Bethpage High School graduate

Kramer Lane School Sports Night
Not even a January chill could dampen the team spirit,
sportsmanship and athletic skill of the Kramer Lane School's
Class of 2005. The fifth graders raised money for the PTA to
donate to the Bethpage High School Scholarship Fund as they
challenged their parents and teachers to a variety of sports
events and unique games. A basketball- shootout, rock- paper-scissors
game, body- words creative lettering contest and four-court
keep- it- up volleyball game were enjoyed by all. Mrs. Terc
and Mr. Zito, physical education teachers, volunteered to
organize the students and act as referees. The Bethpage High
School Varsity Cheerleaders performed at half- time. Raffles
and refreshments provided by the PTA added to the festivities
for the victorious students.

Letter To The Editor
To all the Residents of the Town of Oyster Bay,
I would like to take the time to thank all of the Oyster Bay Town workers
who spent the last weekend battling the blizzard of ' 05. The men and women
of our workforce worked Saturday night and all day Sunday plowing the roads
and were back in the trucks 3 o'clock in the morning on Monday spreading
sand to ensure a safe commute that morning.
I attended all of the staff meetings that were held by Deputy Supervisor
Genova and Commissioner of Highways Rich Betz. It was amazing to see how
they handled the " organized chaos," setting the routes, preparing for broken
equipment, and planning to handle the worst case scenario. I met with many
of our drivers and thanked them for working so hard for the safety of our
residents. I asked the drivers and supervisors what could be done to make
their jobs easier and the clean up process more efficient. They came up with
the following suggestions that the residents should adhere to:
1. Try to park all cars in the driveway and get them off the street. In the
event that you cannot get them off the street, in odd years park them in front
of odd number houses. This will allow a wider path to be plowed.
2. Do not shovel or blow snow back into the street.
3. Clean the snow away from the Fire Hydrants, this will make it easier for
the Fire Department in the event of an emergency.
If we all follow the above steps it will make the clean up after a snowstorm
quicker, safer and easier.
Sincerely,
Anthony D. Macagnone
Councilman
Dear Linda,
What would it cost to put the light on Stewart Ave.? Could we do it
ourselves? Instead of scholarships, a light may benefit more young people. A
plaque saying something like:
In loving memory of those who died too young - for the safety of all. A
caring community, Bethpage.
Thru the Tribune and any stores in town, could we meet the cost, and get
an ok?
Just a thought...
Doris Steimer
Bethpage
Dear Linda,
Whatever happened to shoveling sidewalks? It is a disgrace. As a non-driver
and grandmother who babysits for her grandchildren I have to either
risk getting hit by a car walking to town in the street or remain home. Forget
trying to push a stroller with a child.
The majority just clear a path to their car and shovel their driveways. What
about the senior citizens? What about the young mother with children? What
about the poor mailman? In New York City tickets used to be given out to
those who neglected to shovel. The county would certainly profit if this law
were enacted here. Has anyone tried to ride a bus? There is no place to wait.
It's either the street or standing on a two foot pile of snow and whatever
happened to the fire hydrants?
Wake up people.
Sincerely,
Joan Landers

On the Matter of Stewart Avenue
I, too, have sent a number of letters to the Nassau County Highway
Department and the New York State Department of Transportation imploring
them to reconsider and put a light on Stewart Avenue and Beverly Rd.
Legislator Mangano's appeals and mine need support from the community
in order to get this done. Please write to:

St. Martin Basketball
This past weekend Lou Mayor's
6th Grade Boy's team won twice,
improving their record to 6- 3. The
hard work in practice paid off for
Mayr's crew as each game went
down to the wire. The game on
Sunday against St. Raphael's was
extremely exciting. Raphael's had
beaten St. Martin's last year in the
playoffs to end the squad's season.
St. Martin's sixth- graders were
looking to avenge the loss and
prove they could play with the better
teams. They did so in fine fashion.
The contest was held at a boisterous
St. Raphael's gym. Many lead
changes occurred with neither team
having a lead greater than four
points. With the game tied at 24 with
less than 30 seconds remaining
Tommy Asselta nailed a shot from
the right baseline to give St. Martin's
a two- point lead. St. Raphael's
chance to tie ended when Richie
Hansen blocked a basket as the
buzzer sounded. The outstanding
team play was evident by all players
including Matt Chen, Justin Mayr,
Rob Sabella, Nick Pumo and KC
Portaro. A key component to the
team, Travis Hanson did not play
due to illness was great support from
the bench. Joe Soultanis, who also
was unable to play, will be back next
week. At full strength the club
should be able to make a great effort
to gain a playoff spot. The team
under Coach Lou Mayr's guidance is
playing its best basketball of the
season.
Ed Conway's " Blue" 6th are also
playing well. Dan Conway leads the
offense with crisp passing. Bryan
Pouria, John Brewer and Andrew
Mirman provide scoring. The
defensive presence of Ryan Rivera,
Michael Ganz, Chris Chappel and
Pouria guide the team. Matt
Messina, Richard Stewart, Conway
and Mirman are able to press to aid in
the team's fine play. With many
quality opponents in their division
Conway's Crew will need their best
efforts to make the playoffs. All
players are improving and
developing the fundamentals to
become fine basketball players
when they are older.
Both sixth grade coaches,
Conway and Mayr should be
commended for their great efforts
with their boys. Sportsmanship and
team play are high priorities of the
two coaches.
Stop by CBS to see great
basketball by our St. Martin teams.
Games are Saturday from 9 to 2 PM
and on Wednesday and Friday
evenings.
First Pediatric After Hours
Urgent Care Practices
The first after hours pediatric urgent
care practice on Long Island opens
in Syosset, New York. PM
Pediatrics, a unique medical model
treating pediatric patients who might
otherwise visit a hospital emergency
department, offers after hours care
with short waits in a comfortable,
convenient and accessible
environment. The practice is open
365 days a year.
Dr. Jeffrey A. Schor, a national
leader in Pediatric Emergency
Medicine and Chair of Long Island's
Committee on Pediatric Emergency
Medicine ( COPEM) of the American
Academy of Pediatrics, developed
the concept for PM Pediatrics after
recognizing that a large majority of
the thirty five million children seen in
emergency departments each year
could be cared for safely and more
effectively in an appropriately staffed
and equipped outpatient setting.
" While I have great respect for
the quality of care provided in
hospital emergency departments,
that environment is often not
appropriate for a frightened child nor
is it convenient for parents who must
frequently wait long hours before
being seen. PM Pediatrics wants to
provide the community with a better
option for those children who must
be seen but do not require the
critical, life- and- death treatment a
hospital emergency setting can
provide."
PM Pediatrics is partnering with
pediatricians in the community,
allowing patients to remain within
their " medical home." " We don't
provide routine care such as well-child
examinations or vaccinations
nor do we schedule appointments,"
according to Dr. Schor. " That is the
role of the patient's primary care
provider." In addition, the practice
has invested in a state- of- the- art
information system that allows them
to communicate instantly with the
patient's pediatrician.
Staffed with Pediatric Emergency
Medicine Specialists, PM Pediatrics
will treat illnesses and injuries
ranging from asthma, fever, stomach
distress and infections to broken
bones and wounds requiring
stitches. This state of the art urgent
care practice includes:
- a procedure room with
everything necessary to calm or
relieve pain
- a complete electronic medical
record
- digital radiography
- an in- house laboratory
- equipment customized to fit
children's smaller anatomy
- frequently prescribed
medications ( to minimize pharmacy
trips)
The novel medical concept also
boasts a vibrant and child friendly
environment. Dr. Schor collaborated
with an expert interior design team
to create an enchanting oceanfront
resort theme, complete with a play
area, digital entertainment, and
playful exam rooms ( each with its
own TV), all intended to minimize
stress and anxiety.
The practice is conveniently
located at 596 Jericho Turnpike ( just
west of Route 135, behind
Sleepy's). Hours are Mon- Fri 5PM-Midnight
& Sat., Sun. and Holidays
Noon- Midnight. For more

Good Shepherd Students Say
Hola to Spanish and Reading
by Maria A. Schulz
The lucky kids at Good Shepherd
have lots to smile about. Just like
they did in the 2003- 2004 school
year, in addition to learning their
ABCs and 123s, they're getting a
head start on Spanish speaking and
a lifelong love of books.
With Irma Carlson's help,
kindergartners, full day students,
and 5- Day Pre- K classes are learning
to say their colors, numbers and
names en Espanol. The children
have a great time singing songs and
reading stories, and learning all
about Spanish customs and
traditions. Senora Carlson, pictured
here with student Jordan Francis,
makes learning and appreciating
Spanish pleasurable and fun.
" The children are so excited,"
Mrs. Ocker, the 5 day Pre-
Kindergarten teacher said. " They
love going home and telling their
parents how to count or say their
colors in Spanish. It's a joy to see."
When the children aren't learning
Spanish, they must might be with
librarian Marilyn Brenner. Mrs.
Brenner lends her considerable
talents as a former teacher and
school director to Good Shepherd
by reading monthly to all students.
Mrs. Brenner is pictured here having
fun with the full day class of
2003/ 2004.
Mrs. Brenner also coordinates
Good Shepherd's innovative
Birthday Book Club program, with
lets parents donate money towards
a book that Mrs. Brenner chooses.
After it's selected, the birthday child
has his or her photo taken, the
photograph is placed in the front of
the book, and the book goes home
with the birthday child to be shared
and enjoyed by family and friends.
After a few days, the birthday child
brings the book back, and it goes to
Good Shepherd's library, where
children get to enjoy the book
donated to the club for years to
come - and where everyone can
celebrate the birthday child's special
day and special gift back to Good
Shepherd.
" Mrs. Brenner really knows her
books, and that's reflected in the
wonderful titles she chooses for our
library," says Mrs. Linda Grund,
Good Shepherd's Educational
Director.
" We're really thrilled to have the
children learning so many incredible
new things, and having fun while
they're at it," said Mrs. Grund. " That's
what learning is all about."
