Commerce Festival is busy
putting the last minute touches
on Summer Festival 2005. It is
hard to believe that in less than

deemed as the third largest
Summer Festival on Long
Island. The dates for this
year's event are August 12 and

as always the Chamber will be
featuring fabulous rides, which
are brought to you by Newton
Amusements. There will also
be games of skill and chance as
well as plenty of merchant
booths for the young and young
at heart. Although
sponsorsh ips for the festival
are still coming in the Chamber
is ecstatic to announce that the
Bethpage Federal Credit
Union and Northrop
Grumman have signed on as
platinum sponsors of Summer
Festival 2005. They are also
pleased to announce that
Cablevision HomeStar Financial,
Bank of New York and King
Kullen Supermarkets are
also generous sponsors of his

of these dedicated and
generous sponsors this festival

In addition to the rides and
games we are proud once
again to be able to light up tlw

Arsenic And Old Lace

comes to The Stage Theatre located

N. Y. from August 13th through
September 11. Fridays and
Saturdays start at 8: 30pm and
Sundays at 3: 00pm with one
performance on Thursday, August
25th which starts at 8: 00om. Tickets
are $ 18.00. Senior Citizens and
students are $ 14.00 for Friday and
Sunday shows.
Arsenic is a frenzied, hilarious,
madcap black comedy. The story of
Mortimer Brewster, the youngest of
three brothers who* were raised by
two dear, but eccentric, spinster
aunts, who have a nasty little habit
of " putting poor souls" out of their
misery with a little arsenic- laced
elderberry wine. It is delightful to
watch Mortimer go from a nice,
normal, newlywed to a nervous,
neurotic mess as he tries to figure a
way out of the predicament his well-meaning
aunts have placed them all
in. Throw in one brother who thinks
he's Teddy Roosevelt, and another
who is a psychopathic killer
fashioned after Boris Karloff, and
you'll be laughing the entire way
through.

Councilman Coschignano Offers Brochure
On Anti- Graffiti Campaign
Graffiti- covered walls and structures
are signs of urban blight and
have no business here in the Town
of Oyster Bay, according to Town
Councilman Chris J. Coschignano,
who advises residents that the Town
has available an informative
brochure detailing the Town's tough
" zero tolerance" Anti- Graffiti
Campaign.
" Looking around the Town, it is
evident that the Town's anti- graffiti
campaign has been successful, but
there are still problem areas,"
Councilman Coschignano stated.
" The Town's anti- graffiti brochure
explains how we are fighting - and
winning - the war against graffiti vandals.
" The Town's ' zero tolerance' position
toward graffiti is reflected in its
tough Graffiti abatement Law and
comprehensive graffiti abatement
program," Councilman Coschignano
said. " Both are fully explained in this
brochure."
Councilman Coschignano noted
that any resident or organization
interested in obtaining a free
brochure can pick one up at Town
Halls North ( Oyster Bay) and South
( Massapequa), the Department of
Public Works ( Syosset) and at major
park facilities, or call or write to the
Town of Oyster Bay Public
Information Office, Town Hall East,

Special Benefit at Governor's
For Diana Marie on Aug. 17
Little seven- year- old Diana Marie
Michaels needs our help. Diana's
heartbreaking story begins with the
fact that she was born with VATER
syndrome, which wreaks havoc on a
person's body in a variety of ways
from day one. In Diana's case it
meant she was born with an
imperforate anus ( meaning she was
born without one), a vaginal Cloaca,
only one kidney, a pin hole in her
heart, hemi- vertebrae at L4, a
tethered spinal cord and scoliosis.
She has had to endure 5 major
surgeries since birth and is
scheduled for a 6th later this summer
to correct her scoliosis. Although
Diana is severely learning disabled
and non- verbal, she is a very sweet
child who is able to giggle, show
emotion and feel love in spite of her
torturous medical history. As you
o can imagine the medical expenses
CNJ
associated with her care are
enormous and quite overwhelming
and it is for that reason that your
help is needed to help out this
wonderful family.
On August 17 at 8: 00pm
Governor's Comedy Cabaret and
Restaurant located at 90 Division
Avenue in Levittown is holding a
night of comedy and entertainment
to benefit Diana Marie. Admission is
just $ 12. This admission price will
be your donation to help this
wonderful child and in return you will
be entertained by some of the best
talent on Long Island. Most
importantly you should take great
pride in knowing that you are
making a difference in the life of a
child that truly needs your help.

BETHPAGE TEENS COMPLETE
STUDIES AT BARRY TECH
One Receives Honors for Outstanding Achievements
Seven Bethpage High School students
were among 493 teenagers
who recently completed programs
at the Joseph M. Barry Career &
Technical Education Center ( Barry
Tech). Each student received a
Certificate of Completion at a ceremony
held on the C. W. Post campus
in June.
An Outstanding Student Award
was presented to Jennifer Ryan,
who studied Horse Science &
Management.
The students and their programs
are: Dominic Mafrici ( Computerized
Business Technology), Joseph
Callegari ( Graphic Design), Gina
Boccio and Jennifer Ryan ( Horse
Science & Management), Jeffrey
Cichon ( Plumbing), Michael Olic
( Small Animal Care) and Peter
Heuschneider ( Veterinary Science).
In addition to earning their high
school diplomas, these youngsters
now have the hands- on experience
needed to compete in today's job
market. Their Barry Tech course-work
also may enable them to
obtain advanced credit for programs
in some colleges and other post-secondary
institutions.
Barry Tech is the state- of- the- art
career and technical education center
that Nassau BOCES operates
for high school students in Nassau
County. Students spend part of their
day studying one of more than two
dozen careers in fields including
aviation, auto repair, animal care,
construction, computer technology,
culinary arts, video production and
health care services. They spend
the rest of their day at their home
high school. Students may also take
academic courses at Barry Tech in
English, math, science, social studies
or physical education. For more
information, visit the Barry Tech
web site at www. barrytech. org

Firefighters Museum Receives
$ 1.3 Million Grant
The Francis X Pendl Nassau
County Firefighters Museum and
Education Center today announced
the receipt of a grant of $ 1.3 million
dollars from the County of Nassau.
The funds will be applied to initial
construction costs of a 4,500 square
foot Museum in a former aircraft
hanger on the grounds of Museum
Row in Uniondale. The space will
include educational and historic displays
of vintage and current firefight-ing
apparatus and equiptment, as
well as a state- of- the- art fire safety
education center, designed to teach
Nassau residents of all ages how to
prevent fires and fire related injuries
and deaths. The funding was
approved by two committees and the
floor of the entire County Legislature
without opposition during their sessions
on Monday, July 25th, 2005.
" We are very greatful for this grant,
which will allow us to begin construction
immediately on what will be one
of the premiere museum and fire
safety education facilities in the country
right here in Nassau County," said
Angelo Catalano, Chairman of the
Board of Firefighters Museum and
Education Center. " Nassau County's
almost 10,000 volunteer firefighters
owe a debt of gratitude to County
Executive Tom Suozzi, Legislative
Majority Leader Judy Jacobs and
Minority Leader Peter Schmitt. The
cooperation and support of these
three leaders and the entire Nassau
County Legislature at this critical
moment in out development represents
a turning point in out quest to
build this important facility."
Catalano added, " I would also like
to extend a special thanks to County
Legislators David Deneberg and
Norma Gonsalves, both of whom
have been working closely with the
Museum's leadership for several
years and were instrumental in facilitating
this funding."
The Francis X Pendl Nassau
County Firefighters Museum and
Education Center started as the
dream of several senior members of
the County's volunteer fire service, all
of whom shared a common desire to
preserve the rich history and tradition
of the County's volunteer firefighters,
while also creating a top- notch fire
safety education facility for the general
public. For almost a decade,
Francis X " Frank" Pendl was at the
center of these efforts. As a 50- year
active member and Ex- Chief of the
Bethpage Fire Department, an
Assistant Chief Instructor at the Fire
Service Academy in Old Bethpage
and a Nassau County Fire Marshal,
Frank Pendl embodied the fire service
in Nassau. Sadly, Frank passed away
on April 1,2004; just a few months shy
of seeing his dream of a Firefighters
Museum and Education Center
become a reality. In his honor, the
Museum's leadership has dedicated
the new facility in his name, as a
reminderof his important contributions
to both the developement of this facility
and the fire service here on Long
Island.
The $ 1.3 million dollar grand, combined
with over $ 700,000 previously
raised over the last serveral years, will
provide the means necessary to prepare
the former aircraft hangar for
public assembly and to construct
eight unique sections within the new
Museum space, each dedicated to
different fire safety and educational
themes. The Museum will also feature
several pieces of antique fire apparatus,
which will be restored to their
original splendor.
" I would also like to take this opportunity
to t hank State Senator Charles
Fuschillo, Jr. for his tremendous
efforts on our behalf over the years,"
said Chairman Catalano. " Chuck has
been with us from the start and has
Museum over the past several years.
Senator Fuschillo's dedication and
hard work, along with the efforts of
his colleague Senator Michael
Balboni, have been key to our efforts
to date, laying the groundwork for
additional public and private sector
funding for this project."
An official Groundbreaking
Ceremony for the Museum and
Education Center will take place at 7
P. M. on August 9th, 2005, adjacent to
the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The
festivities will include Mary Jane
Pendl, Franks wife of 54 years, and
the longest serving members of the
County's 76 Fire Departments and
Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Current
plans call for the Museum to potentially
open to the public later this
year.

Local Efforts to Help Solve
Animal Over population
Overpopulation due to unwanted
litters sends millions of animals to
animal shelters each year. The 41
PETCO stores in the New York City
area and the PETCO Foundation
hope to help break the vicious cycle
of pet overpopulation with their
upcoming annual Round- Up/ Spay
Today fundraiser.
During Round- Up/ Spay Today
2005, which runs from July 24
through August 14, PETCO customers
will be encouraged to " roundup"
their purchases to the next highest
dollar. Each of PETCO's more
than 740 stores will select one or
more spay/ neuter- focused charitable
partners for this fundraiser, who will
be the recipient( s) of the individual
store's fundraising efforts.
In addition, 10% of all funds raised
will be donated to the Petfinder. com
Foundation to assist their
spay/ neuter efforts. Petfinder. com is
the nation's largest and oldest online
adoption community, offering a
searchable database of adoptable
companion animals. Together,
PETCO, Petfinder. com and participating
shelters have found homes for
millions of adoptable animals nation
wide.
" Pets are ultimately our responsibility
as pet parents," PETCO
Foundation Director Paul Jolly said.
" It's a tragedy that 4- 5 million
unwanted pets are euthanized each
year. With the Round- Up campaign,
we have an opportunity to really
make a difference by raising funds
for local spay and neuter groups."
Spaying and neutering dogs and
cats not only prevents litters of
unwanted puppies and kittens, but
also provides many health benefits
such as decreased risks of ovarian,
mammary, and testicular cancers.
Last years Round- Up efforts
raised more than $ 817,000 for local
animal welfare organizations across
the country. To locate the nearest
PETCO, visit PETCO's website at
www. petco. com. General donations
can also be made to the Foundation
through the PETCO website.
PERCO is a leading specialty
retailer of premium pet food, supplies
and services with a commitment to
quality animal care and education.
PETCO's strategy is to offer its customers
a complete assortment of
pet- related products and services at
competitive prices, with the superior
levels of customer service at convenient
locations, by hiring pet lovers
and training them to become counselors
to our pet- loving customers.
PETCO operates more than 740
neighborhood stores in 48 states and
the District of Columbia, as well as a
leading destination for on- line per
food and supplies at
www. PETCO. com. The PETCO
Foundation, PETCO's non- profit
organization, has raised more then
$ 23 million since inception n 1999.
More than 2,700 non- profit grassroots
animal welfare organizations
from around the nation have
received support from the
Foundation. Through the PETCO
Foundation, PETCO endeavors to be
a community leader in promoting the
welfare of companion animals, as
well as the importance of the human-animal
bond.
