I VOL. 43 NO. 30 August 26- September 1, 2005 FIFTY CENTS

Honored By NYIT
Clitos Papadopoulous of
Bethpage, N. Y., was recently
honored as one of the strongest
athletes to ever play for New York
Institute of Technology's ( NYIT)
soccer team. He was one of five
individuals inducted into the
college's Athletics Hall of Fame this
year. During the ceremony, which
took place at NYlT's de Seversky
Center in Old Westbury, N. Y.,
Papadopoulous was praised for his !
talent and dedication to the team.
From the moment
Papadopoulous stepped onto the
NYIT soccer field in 1981, he made
his presence known, setting a
school record for most goals in a
freshman season with 19. He now
holds NYIT career soccer records in
goals ( 60), assists ( 40), and games
played ( 74). Papadopoulous earned
First Team All- Conference honors all

Bethpage Fire Department
Responds to Cafeteria Explosion at
Robert Plan
On August 10, 2005 at 1: 32 pm
the Bethpage Volunteer Fire
Department received a phone call
from the Security Office at the
Robert Plan Insurance Company,
999 Stewart Ave. They advised that
there was a fire in the cafeteria
located on the first floor.
Subsequent phone calls reported
an explosion with burn victim.
The building was immediately
evacuated. Employees directed
Bethpage firefighters to the area
involved in the fire. Units which
responded included Bethpage
Ladder 3, Squad 4, Engine 9077,
ambulance 9056, medic car 9066
along with numerous Eighth
precinct cars and police ambulance
2368. A male kitchen worker
suffered first and second degree
burns. He was transported to
Nassau University Medical Center's
Burn Unit via Bethpage ambulance
9056. A second patient was treated
on site by Nassau County police
ambulance medical technicians.
It appears that the fire and
explosion were caused by a portable
butane fueled stove which went on
fire. During an attempt to extinguish
the fire, the stove was dropped
causing the butane aerosol can to
explode. The butane can was about
the size of a shaving cream can, but
the explosion was powerful enough
to cause significant structural
damage. The explosion was felt
through an eight inch concrete floor
by employees on the second level
of the building.
The Nassau County fire marshals
and Nassau County health
department were on the scene
investigating this incident. Captain
Tim Mooney reported that all
Bethpage firefighters were back in
service by 3 pm.

The flag displayed above the
Archie McCord Post 86 of the
American Legion Hall to all outside
appearances is just like hundreds of
other American Flags. Fifty stars
representing our fifty states and
thirteen stripes for the original
colonies in red, white and blue.
However, this flag is very special
to us, it was awarded to the family of
Jerry Hlavaty, upon his demise, a
patriotic American who served
ho. iorably in the U. S. Coast Guard
during World War II. He was
stationed in Bangor, Maine and
Puerto Rico protecting our shores
from German U- boat attacks. You
may recall that U- boats came in close
to our shores in Long Island to land
spies and disrupt our shipping
lanes.
In Puerto he served aboard the
U. S. S. Dow, a district patrol vessel
which was later lost. Comparatively
few ships were built for the Coast
Guard. Most were converted trawlers
or merchant vessels, as was the
Dow.
We thank Linda and Bob Adamec
for donating this flag to our Post. We
are proud and honored to display
Jerry's flag, a gift of a thankful nation
for his honorable service.
If you have a loved one, who
served honorably, in any branch of
service, we would be pleased to
display their flag above our hall. Just
call the Archie McCord Post 86 of
the American Legion at ( 516) 822-
1331 and leave a message and we
will return your call.

Town of Oyster Bay September 11
Memorial Dedication
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor
John Venditto invites all residents to
join him, his Town Board colleagues
and his neighbors at the Town's
September 11 memorial dedication,
which will be held rain or shine on
Saturday, September 10, at Tobay
Beach, beginning at 11 a. m.
" The location at Tobay Beach
was selected because there is a
direct line of sight to where the Twin
Towers once stood and it also
provides a serene and peaceful
surrounding, making it a fitting
backdrop for a place of
remembrance," Supervisor Venditto
explained. " At the ceremony, we will :
unveil the monument inscribed with
the names of Town of Oyster Bay
residents lost in the tragedy, as wel)
as a steel beam recovered from the
World Trade Center, positioned in *
the direct line of sight where the
Twin Towers once stood."
The Supervisor noted that the
memorial service will include
bagpipe music, as well as vocalist
performances and religious
readings. In addition, the names of
the Town of Oyster Bay residents
inscribed on the memorial will be
read.
The monument is 30 feet in
diameter, in the shape of a semicircle.
The granite- clad wall stands
approximately six- feet high in the
center and tapers down to six inches
at the ends. In addition to the wall
itself and the steel girder, the
memorial also includes benches, a
flagpole, landscaping and
decorative pavement defining the
Twin Towers and the Pentagon.
" While there are other
monuments on Long Island to
commemorate those who were lost,
my fellow Town Board members and
I feel strongly that there should be a
memorial in our own hometown -
our lost loved ones' hometown -- to
serve as a local concourse for
remembering those who had roots
in our community and perished as a
result of the attacks," trie Supervisor
stated.
To get to Tobay Beach, take the
Wantagh Parkway south to Ocean
Parkway ( Jones Beach) and head
east. Follow Ocean Parkway for
about four miles and you'will see
signs for Tobay Beach. For further
information about the. memorial,
contact the Department of
Community & " Youth Services at
797- 7900.
" I hope that all residents will join
us on Saturday, September 10 to
remember our friends and
neighbors who were lost in the
September 11 tragedy," Supervisor
Venditto concluded. " While it will be
a solemn time, it will also provide a
great opportunity for us to pay
tribute and memorialize our loved
ones who were taken from us too
soon."
Library PORTRAITS Series
The Bethpage Public Library
presents a varied and interesting
roster of afternoon programs on a
continuing basis at the library. Mark
the following dates on your calendar
and plan to attend. Admission is free
and everyone is welcome to attend.
Don't miss " A Portrait of the Life
& Times of Sir Isaac Newton" an
intriguing program presented by Dr.
Thomas Henick, Professor of
Physics at Stonybrook. This
program is part of the Bethpage
Library's on- going PORTRAITS
Biographical Series and will take
place on Tuesday, August 30 at
2: 00 P. M. Newton ( 1642- 1727) is
considered by many to be the
world's greatest scientist in any field.
He discovered the laws of motion
and gravity, the secrets of light and
color and showed how the universe
is held together. His further
discoveries are numerous and he
remains a fascinating figure even
today as evidenced by his role in the
recent best- selling novel The Da
Vinci Code.

Hicksville Chamber of Commerce
Honors Rose Walker
The Hicksville Chamber of
Commerce's need to acknowledge
the ongoing efforts of a nonbusiness
or business person who
showed exceptional dedication to
the improvement and betterment of
Hicksville and its people for their
generous contribution of time,
energy and service given toward the
promotion and growth of a better
Hicksville is what has become known
as the Citizen of the Year Award.
This year's recipient is
Rose Marie Walker. I was born on
June 30, 1951 at Mercy Hospital,
Rockville Centre, New York. I am a
lifelong Hicksville resident. I
attended both Fork Lane and Holy
Family School and graduated from
Queen of the Rosary Academy,
Amityville in 1969, I furthered my
education at Sacred Heart College,
Belmont, NC earning a BA in
Education in 1973.
On July 7, 1973, I married John
A. Walker ( Hicksville). The job market
for teachers was over saturated at
this time but I was lucky enough to
sub for the Diocese of Rockville
Centre and I worked almost every
day at St. Ignatius in Hicksville and
then took a permanent sub position
as a kindergarten teacher at Notre
Dame in New Hyde Park. Eventually I
went back to subbing in the
Hicksville School Distri6t and in 1992
took a TA position in Hicksville High
School. This being a part time
position, I also worked in the
accounting office of the Town of
Oyster Bay Parks Dept. In 1998, I left
the district and worked full time in
Parks, eventually supervising the
accounting office. In August 2000, I
transferred to Family and Children's
Association, working in the Town of
Oyster Bay Dept. of
Intergovernmental Affairs, as a
Career Counselor. I worked there
until Jan. 1, 2004 when I became a
Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman.
It is truly a rewarding position. I am
proud and honored to serve the
people of the Town of Oyster Bay. I
also work for Sen. Michael Balboni
as a Constituent Services Aide and I
continue to work for the school
district during the basketbc. il and
lacrosse seasons.
I am blessed with 4 ( 5 including
Rob's wife) children. Rob and his
lovely wife Liz, Jennifer, Bryan
( Mugs) and Kristi. I am proud of all
that I do, but most importantly proud
of being their mom. Sadly, we lost
John on Aug. 29, 1999.
My hobbies include spending
time with my family and friends. I
enjoy most sporting activities as a
participant and spectator. I enjoy
making crafts, but have little time to
do this. Limited time also disallows
much traveling.
Volunteerism has always been a
part of my life. I truly believe it is in
giving to others that we receive. I
have been an active member of Holy
Family parish serving on Parish
Council, teaching confraternity and
serving as President of the Rosary
Society. I have been active in PTA
for 25 years, serving on virtually
every committee, chairing many of
them and served as President of
elementary, middle, high school and
PTA Council. I was a former trustee
of the Hicksville Board of Education
and founding member of the
Hicksville Athletic Booster Club. I
coached the Parkway Swim Team in
the Town of Oyster Bay/ Town of
Hempstead Joint District LSA
Program and was the LSA swim
coach in the Nassau County Swim
Conference. I also served on the
Levittown Swimming Association
Board of Directors. I have
volunteered countless hours on the
athletic fields of Hicksville PAL
Lacrosse, Hicksville Baseball
Association, Levittown Red Devil
Football League and Hicksville
Crusader Football. Additionally I
served as secretary of the Hofstra
Lacrosse Parents Association.
I am also a member of many
community organizations. I serve on
the board of Irish Americans in
Government. I am proud to be a
member of the Hicksville Chamber of
Commerce, a member of many civic
associations, Hicksville Athletic
Booster Club, Hicksville PTA and
PAL, an honorary VP of the
Hicksville Community Council, to
name a few.
Well, I have to work until I am 150
years old but if and when I retire... my
retirement dreams are to continue to
be an active part of my community
and to spend time with my children
and grandchildren ( when they arrive)
and my many wonderful friends.

Effective July 2005, a
combination pertussis, tetanus and
diphtheria vaccine became available
for use in children aged 7 years and
older. This vaccine ( Tdap) replaces
the previously used tetanus
diphtheria vaccine.
A newer meningococcal vaccine
that provides longer lasting immunity
is now available. It is recommended
for children aged 11- 12 years and
also for entering high school
students if they have not had the
vaccine previously.
The table below lists the required
vaccines for school entry. Although
only 3 doses of polio, diphtheria,
tetanus and pertussis are required,
the recommended number of doses
depends on the age of the student:
4 doses DTP by age 15- 18 months,
5 doses by age 4- 6 years and a
booster at age 11- 12 years and
every 10 years thereafter, and 4
doses of polio vaccine by age 4- 6
years.

9 Annual Concord Ave. Block Party
Celebrates Christmas in August
by Ann Albertson
August 6th, at 2 P. M. Concord
Avenue was closed to traffic so the
neighborhood could set up to
celebrate Christmas in August,
which was the theme for the 9th
annual Block Party!
As the barriers went up, to keep
the cars off the street, the children
took to the street to run, ride bikes
and scooters, or chase a ball down
the street. What fun! As the day
progressed, there were games,
activities, treats, and hand outs for
the children. Then the adults had
the opportunity to sharpen their
techniques for their turn at some
games and dance to the D. J. Then
we all took chances on the 50/ 50
hoping to be the big winner. Even if
we didn't win, we were glad to
contribute, as the money will go
towards the planning and expense
for the Block Party of 2006.
D. J. Fran Diamond, has been
with us for 9 years, and we find it to
be a mutual fun experience. We
thank Fran for that. He sure knows
how to keep a party lively!
Next year we will be celebrating
our 10th anniversary! We hope to
have more neighborhood
participation to make it a true
neighborhood block party. We thank
Lisa Borgese, Ronda Lamprecht,
Tricia Zebler, and Dolores Imbriale
for all their efforts to bring our
neighborhood together for an
evening that is fun for all.

FOOD STAMP/ ADCATANF/ FDPIR HOUSEHOLDS: Households which
currently include children who receive Food Stamps or Aid to Dependent
Children ( ADC)/ Temporary Assistance to Needy Families ( TANF), or the Food
Distribution Program on Indian Reservations ( FDPIR) must complete an
application listing the child's name, a food stamp, ADC/ TANF, or FDPIR
number and the signature of an adult household member, or provide a Direct
Certification letter from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability
Assistance. Children in the household with the same case number may be
included on the same application. Separate applications are required for
children in the same household with different case numbers. If the family
does not list a food stamp, ADC/ TANF, or FDPIR number for all children for
whom they are applying, then the application must contain all the information
as required for " other households" as described below.
Other Households: Households with incomes the same or below the amount
of money listed above for their family size may be eligible for and are urged to
apply for free and/ or reduced price meals. They may do so by filling in the
application forms sent home with a letter to parents. Additional copies are
available at the principal's office in each school. Applications may be
submitted any time during the school year to the appropriate school's social
worker. If a family member becomes unemployed, if the family size decreases,
or if family income increases by more than $ 50.00 per month or $ 600.00 per
year, the family must contact the school to file a new application. The form
requests information needed to determine economic need based on the
income and number of persons in the family.
The information provided on the application will be confidential and will be
used for determining eligibility. The names and eligibility status of participants
may also be used for the allocation of funds to federal education programs
such as Title I and National Assessment of Education Progress ( NAEP), State
health or State education programs, and for federal, State or local means-tested
nutrition programs with eligibility standards comparable to the NSLP.
Eligibility information may also be released to programs authorized under the
National School Lunch Act ( NSLA) or the Child Nutrition Act ( CNA). The
release of information to any program or entity not specifically authorized by
the NSLA will require a written consent statement from the parent or
guardian.
The school district does, however, have the right to verify at any time during
the school year the information on the application. If a parent does not give
the school this information, the child/ children will no longer be able to receive
free or reduced price meals.
Foster children may also be eligible for these benefits. An application for a
foster child must contain the child's name, the child's " personal use" income
and an adult signature.
Under the provisions of the policy, the designated official will review
applications and determine eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling
of the designated official, he/ she may make a request either orally or in writing
for a hearing to appeal the decision. Mr. Joseph Marchesiello, Assistant
Superintendent for Business, whose address is Bethpage Union Free
School District, Cherry Avenue, Bethpage, New York 11714, has been
designated as the Hearing Official. Hearing procedures are outlined in the
policy. However, prior to initiating the hearing procedure, the parent or
School Food Authority may request a conference to provide an opportunity
for the parent and official to discuss the situation, present information, and
obtain an explanation of the data submitted in the application or the decisions
rendered. The request for a conference shall not in any way prejudice or
diminish the right to a fair hearing.
Only complete applications can be approved. This includes complete and
accurate information regarding: the Food Stamp/ ADC/ TANF, or FDPIR
number; the names of all household members; the social security number of
the person who signs the form or an indication that the adult does not have
