The State Education
Department ( SED) recently
released scores on the 2005
Math assessments for fourth
and eighth grade students.
Bethpage students continued to
soar, as eighth graders
achieved the highest score of
any school district in Nassau
County on the Grade 8 Math
Assessment. Elementary grade
students were impressive as
well. Bethpage was the fourth
highest performing district in the
county on the Grade 4 Math
Assessment.
" The teachers looked closely
at the areas where students had
difficulties in the past. Through
data analysis, we were better
able to focus our instructional
practices to meet the needs of
the students" said Bethpage
Director of Mathematics Angel
Kozlowski. " We thank not only
our fourth and eighth grade
faculty, but our teachers across
• the grade levels for preparing
students. It's been a vertical
process, from kindergarten on
up."
Bethpage's success is
gauged by the percentage of
eighth graders scoring in Levels
3 and 4 on the exam, SED's
benchmark for success. In
2005, 92.8% of students scored
in either Levels 3 or 4 on the
Grade 8 Assessment, achieving
the highest passing percentage
in Nassau. Great Neck was
right behind Bethpage followed
by the Jericho School District.
" We are proud of the effort
shown by our students on all of
the state examinations," said
JFK Middle School Principal
Kerri McCarthy. " They have
met the challenge of higher
standards while maintaining
their community spirit and their
willingness to help others. It
was nice that we received this
news at the same time we were
raising funds to help the victims
of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
It really shows how well
rounded Bethpage students
are."
Bethpage's results for 2005
on the Grade 4 exam marked a
significant improvement from
the previous year. In 2005, 99%
of the fourth grade students
passed the state assessment,
an increase of seven points.
Bethpage's standardized test
scores overall have risen
dramatically over the last
several years.
According to Terrence Clark,
the Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction and Technology,
" This has really been a
coordinated effort by everyone
involved. The teachers have
spent a great deal of time
analyzing past results to
determine which areas required
more instructional time. They
have rewritten curriculum and
local assessments to better
reflect the new standards and
they have placed greater
emphasis on interdisciplinary
learning. Parents have
attended workshops on the new
assessments and we have seen
an increased level ot
communication between home
and school. And there has
been a heavy emphasis on the
use of technology to help
illustrate mathematical
concepts."
" This is a testament to the
teamwork of our entire school
community," said
Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Richard S. Marsh. " I commend
our hard- working JFK and
elementary students who made
the commitment to meet the

Sarah Bemhardt's performance in

Sardou to translate the story into

the intense masterpiece which is set
in Napoleonic times. Passion,
political intrigue, betrayal and
harrowing interrogation combine
with mastery of orchestration and
tremendous melodic presentation.
This is an opportunity to come to

structure that comprise Tosca.

Lead Poisoning
In recognition of the 7th Annual
National Lead Poison Control Week
( October 23- 29), the Nassau County
Department of Health reminds
residents that lead poisoning is one
of the most preventable childhood
health problems in New York State.
Even small amounts of lead can
harm a child's developing nervous
system and may result in behavior
problems, learning disorders, poor
school performance, lower I. Q.,
hearing loss, anemia, kidney
damage, or growth retardation.
Breathing in lead dust or
swallowing lead- coated particles
causes lead poisoning. Small
amounts of lead are invisible and
odorless. Most lead- poisoned
children have no symptoms. Those
with severe lead poisoning may
have stomach cramps and may
develop convulsions.
Nassau County Department of
Health Commissioner, Dr. David M.
Ackman, urges everyone to take
appropriate measures to ensure a
lead- safe environment for children
to prevent lead poisoning. This is
consistent with the theme of
National Lead Poison Control Week:
" Put a Lid on Lead."
The most common way children
are poisoned from lead is from
exposure to lead paint, which is
commonly found in homes ( and
some furniture and toys) built before
1978. Even if your home has been
repainted, repeated rubbing of one
painted surface against another
( such as opening and closing
windows) could expose bid, lead-based
paint in your homes. The
Department of Health reminds
residents that worn, cracked or
peeling lead- based paint may cause
lead poisoning, especially in
children.
By law, children must be tested
for lead exposure at ages one and
two, and assessed annually until age
six by their health care providers for
exposure to lead. Children entering
day care or nursery school must
show proof of having had a blood
lead test. The blood test can be
obtained from the child's health care
provider.
In 2004, 40,473 lead tests were
obtained from Nassau County
children, and 0.9% of these were
elevated. One child had very severe
lead poisoning and needed to be
hospitalized for special treatment.
The Health Department provides
case management services to
parents of all children with elevated
blood levels and inspects their
homes to identify the cause of the
lead poisoning. It also provides
educational, preventive and
nutritional counseling about
childhood lead poisoning,
supervises safe removal and
abatement of lead hazards and takes
enforcement action, when
necessary, to ensure hazards are
abated.
For information and literature on
lead testing and on reducing lead
hazards from soil, dust, water, food
and other sources, telephone the
Nassau County Department of
Health at 571- 2310.

Highlighting the Residents of Bethpage
Bud Rosch and his family were
very excited as Edith Cruz who is in
the household of Bud for three
years is now an American Citizen.
She studied hard and passed the
requirements and was sworn in
Monday, Sept. 12th. A party was
thrown in her honor.
Edith is a former Guatemalan
citizen. Born and raised and
schooled there. She came here to
the United States thirteen years ago
and married Tito Cruz an American
citizen by birth. Though her
husband is an American citizen and
her daughter born here also an
American citizen, she still had to
apply this is the law. We are
extremely proud of " Edie" the whole
Rosch family love her and her
daughter and her husband. She is
very well known by the Butehom
Bros. VFW Bethpage Post 4987 as
she attended with Bud a past
commander in 1981 and 82. Bud
says " she will make one of the best
citizens our country has. She is
extremely conscious of all our laws."
She definitely is one of our family
and I am so proud of her," Bud says.
The picture taken was at a VFW
Christmas party. The picture was
snapped prior to a pose and we
really like this unusual photograph.
Other picture taken at time of
receiving citizenship.

Letters to the Editor
What's the Scoop on Bethpage Soccer Fields?
What message are we giving our treasured children, when we send them
out to play in the equivalent of a litter box? What does it say to visiting teams
about our community, when we invite them to come play on fields that look
like, nature's bathroom, but have no bathroom facilities for them to use?
You cannot take one step onto the field without landing in geese feces
These conditions have become so unsanitary, the teams need to trade in
their uniforms for Haz- Mat suits! Do we have to wait until a child gets very ill
from salmonella or e- coli, to get the Grumman Soccer Fields cleared of qeese
droppings?
I have been to nearly every soccer field on Long Island, and many others
in several East Coast states, no other fields look like this. It is embarrassing
But more importantly, it is an issue of the safety and health of our children
My message to the powers that be is " SCOOP THE POOP!" Use some of
our high tax dollars to find a permanent solution to this problem, and to install
& maintain some portable commodes.
Kris Perota ( Soccer Mom)
Dear Linda,
I hope there is something you can do to stop the disfiguring of our
beautiful trees.
LIPA thinks Asplund is doing a wonderful job.
LILCO trimmed our trees for many years and you never knew it.
Asplund is a disgrace to Mother Nature.
Please tell me there is something we can do to stop it.
We see many of the trees in our neighborhood like this.
Very truly yours,
Mary Ann Jaworowski

Danny Ligowski scored again after
intercepting a long pass and
returned it for his second

the offense with a quarterback
sneak for 40 yds. for the
touchdown. The last score of the
game was a sustained drive with
catches by Billy Chappell for 10 yds.,
Dylan Reggio for 7 yds., Anthony
Colettas run for 8 yds. and was
capped off when Jimmy Limpert
found Zachary Licht with a 20 yd.
pass to complete the drive. Joe

Hoffman and Nick Kelly all
contributed both offensively and
defensively to a great victory.
Bethpage Raiders

grab in the end zone. Bridget
Cullinane produced the next score

second score. Ryan Walsh scored
the next two touchdowns for the
Raiders. The first score was an
interception and a great run back to
the erid zone. Ryan's second score
was a 37 yd. run for another
touchdown. Angelo Micciche
scored the extra point and the
Bethpage Raiders beat the

Required Reading
In- between visits to the
beach, Bethpage juniors hit the
books this summer, but rather
than cramming for exams, this
was a much more fun
assignment as they were asked
to choose books to read from the
high school's Summer Reading
list. Upon their return to school
this September, the students
participated in book discussions
with their teachers and
department directors to analyze
and share their understanding of
the books. Some of the books
read include Cut, Lovely Bones,
The Da Vinci Code, and The
Perks of Being a Wallflower. The
summer reading list is
coordinated by Bethpage High
School Library- Media Specialist
Nancy Bertrand- Loesch with
Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction and Technology Terry
Clark and Director of Social
Studies Jody Smith leading two
of the 54 book discussion
groups. Eleven of these groups
were led by students and there
were some parent volunteers as
well.

Hardworking Italian Students
Rewarded with a Feast
Kramer Lane's
Excellent Role Model
Andrew " Sic" Siciliano ( I) and Charles Marmorale ( r), Bethpage High School
Italian Regents Student of the Year 2005, exchange thoughts in conversation at
the Italian Regents Student of the Month Italian Dinner at La Piazza in Plainview.
Kristianna Bulla has been a big sister for over a year. As her
parents we are very proud of her new role. Everyday she
demonstrates her ability to share, care and express any
concerns she has for her baby sister. This is a wonderful
quality she has and will also benefit her classmates now and
her future years at Kramer Lane.
Clowny Retires
Bethpage High School Regents Italian students at the Student of the Month
Dinner 2005 at La Piazza restaurant in Plainview.
Bethpage High School Regents
Italian students held their annual
" Student of the Month" dinner at La
Piazza restaurant in Plainview this past
June
Regents Italian Students of the
Month were invited to the dinner after
being selected as Students of the Month
during the 2004- 05 school year. Some
of the accomplishments/ criteria include
achieving a 90 and above average
and/ or demonstrating superior
participation in Regents Italian 2R and
3R. The Outstanding Italian Student of
the Year was Charles Marmorale,
selected for his enthusiasm and
achievement in Regents Italian and his
contribution as an extremely energetic
and positive student for the last two
years.
Students in Freshmen and
Sophomore years are selected monthly.
The Regents' Italian students for the
2004- 05 school year experienced
culture and language achieving
exceptionally high averages of 90 and
above in the Italian Regents , including
three perfect scores.
" As many Italian students can
confirm, acquiring a second language,
especially Italian, is " not only pizza,"
said Italian teacher Jacqueline Jill- Rito.
" Language learning is actually
experiencing another culture and
finding another part of ourselves inside.
Add to this the practicality and
marketability of expressing and
knowing another culture and anyone
can see that learning a language can be
really fun and practical too!"
Many thanks to the management and
staff of La Piazza for making the Italian
dinner one to remember. Best of luck to
the Italian students in the 2005- 06
school year! The annual Bethpage High
School Italian Feast, open to all
residents, is scheduled for March 20,
2006 at Bethpage High School, during
school hours.
On September 4, 2005, the very
famous clown who visited the
Central Boulevard School every
Halloween was the guest of honor at
her retirement party held at a
catering hall in Bethpage. Clowny is
a longtime friend of first and second
grade C. B. S. teacher, Mrs. Cordiner
Clowny grew up with Mrs. Cordiner
but never did her homework, never
read and never took school very
seriously. As a result of these poor
habits, Clowny couldn't go to
college and was unable to become a
teacher even though that is what
she wanted to do. Mrs. Cordiner
would let her substitute for her on
Halloween and Clowny would go
from classroom to classroom
spreading her message that
studying, reading and becoming a
good student is so important to
someday do what you really want to
do in life. Clowny was tutored while
•
working at the circus and feels she is
ready to work with children. She will
be living in Hawaii and will be a part- &
time tutor for children in grades 1,2
and 3. She will be missed in
Bethpage but we are very happy for
her and wish her the best of luck
with her new career in Hawaii. We are
glad she realized the importance of a
good education and proud to see
how hard she worked to obtain her
dream of helping children learn.
Mr. and Mrs. Cordiner were
unable to attend Clowny's
retirement party because they were
out of town to be present at the birth
of their first grandchild, Lindsay
Nicole. Lindsay was born on Sept. 4,
2005; she weighed 6 pounds and
was 19 inches long. She is steadily
growing and is absolutely beautiful.
Mom and daughter are both doing
very well.

If You've Got A Green Thumb
The Chamber fs Got A Planter
With Your Name On It!
The Bethpage Chamber of Commerce is asking local businesses,
organizations and families to participate in their adopt a planter
program. Many other communities all across Long Island have started
programs like this as a way to get business owners, organizations and
local families involved in their Chamber and also as a way to insure
that their town's appearance is maintained. What the Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce is proposing is that individual businesses,
organizations and or families are entitled to adopt a specific planter
along Broadway. When you have made the commitment to that planter
your name will appear on it as the GREEN THUMB Sponsor. The
Chamber will then allow you to select whatever plants you wish from
our list of available plants ( at no cost to the sponsor) and it is then the
sponsor's obligation to maintain their planter. By maintaining the
Chamber means obviously watering the planter as well as the
trimming and clean up of the boxes. This program will start in March
of 2006 and in August of 2006 the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
will present one lucky sponsor with the Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce GREEN THUMB Award as well as a $ 200prize!
Although it seems very early on or perhaps late in the season to be
starting this program, the Bethpage Chamber of Commerce wants to
make sure that every planter has a sponsor so that everyone in
Bethpage will be treated to a spring and summer blooming with color
next yea. rPleaseflll out the application below to sign up to adopt your
planter today. The effort that you put into your planter is effort that
you put into your town. So come on and give your GREEN THUMB a
workout!!
