P. M. Art Historian Donald Dwyer will
present a fascinating slide/ lecture
entitled " Gustave Courbet and
French Realism" as part of the ongoing
ART IN THE AFTERNOON
series. Courbet began his career as
a Neo- Baroque Romantic, but the
revolutions of 1848 caused him to
view Romanticism and Neo-
Classicism as escapes from reality
and he reverted to a more realistic
style which influenced his two
young helpers, Monet and Renoir.
His iconoclasm pointed the way to
modern art.

Recognizing her exceptional
concern for patients and respect for
fellow staff members, Bethpage
resident Patricia Sangirardi, RN, a
nurse manager at Winthrop-
University Hospital, has been
selected as Winthrop's 2005
Wholeness of Life honoree. She will
be presented a citation from The
HealthCare Chaplaincy of New York
City during a celebration on
November 10 at Cipriani's in Times
Square.
The honor pays tribute to patient
care professionals who embody the
spirit of [ the HealthCare
Chaplaincy's] mission: to care for
the whole person— spirit, mind and
body.
" Every Wholeness of Life
honoree has a reputation for
empathy, integrity and dedication to
looking beneath the surface to
ensure the physical, emotional and
spiritual well- being of their patients,"
said Rev. Valerie Storms, M. Div.,
BCC, Pastoral Care Director,
Winthrop.
Nominated for the award by 36
colleagues and Winthrop's Pastoral
Care and Education Program
Committee, Ms. Sangirardi has
been touted as a nurse who makes
sure the spiritual and emotional
needs of patients and their families
are met. Her motto: " Paper is paper,
but patients are patients."
Her nominators also praised her
as an individual who always takes
time to speak with families at length,
easing their fears and doubts— even
giving them her direct phone line so
they are able to ask any questions
at any time
" Her concern for patients'
physical needs truly extends above
and beyond," collectively noted the
staff in their nomination. " We all
often wonder where she gets her
energy and determination to do
what she does best and that is to
render the best care to the patients,
respecting their rights and
maintaining their dignity."

at the Charles Campagne Elementary School

NBC Today Show Highlights Item
Designed by Briarcliffe Professor
For any designer, it's certainly a
substantial honor having a work
highlighted on NBC's nationwide
daily morning program, the Today
Show.
that's exactly the rarefied
experience enjoyed recently by
Briarcliffe College fine art professor
and luxury women's accessories
designer Karen Pellecchia when an
elegant collar she created appeared
on the " Today in New York"
segment of the Today Show. The
piece is a collage of fur, fine silks and
brocades, semi- precious stones and
vintage elements.
" The nature of making art is such
that although the raw materials may
change, the approach to the
creative process remains the same,"
says Pellecchia, a Lynbrook
resident. " The principles and
concepts I share with my students
are the same ones I use in
developing my designs. I'm thrilled
to see such a positive, exciting

today Show staff first learned of
Peilecchia's work from the pages of
Women's Wear Daily, where they
came across her creations in the
2005 Ultimate Fall Accessory Guide.
Her designs also appeared in the
June issue of W magazine, as well as
in Elements magazine.
Pellecchia has been designing
and marketing her designs since
2003. As a full- time faculty member
in the Graphic Design Department at
Briarcliffe College, she shares with
her fine art and art history students
the philosophy that art is a necessity
of life, one that makes individuals
whole.
Pellecchia is aligned with several
charities that support children in
need, and donates a portion of the
proceeds from the sale of her luxury
accessories to these organizations.

REAL
ESTATE
MATTERS
(& y Gina McGovern
Answer: Location, Location, Location!
Question: What are the three most important things to know about Real
Estate?
Like most cliche's this one has a very strong kernel of truth to it. I
frequently tell customers that you can do anything to a house but pick it up
and move it, ( unless of course you're Ty Pennington!). No matter where you
live, this is one universally recognized truth about real estate.
Everyone wants to know about real estate. It's become the hot topic of the
new millennium. While in the 80' s everyone was trading stocks, today, it's real
estate. TV shows have sprung up on every channel. It's almost as popular as
Poker! Americans love their homes. A recent issue of TIME was devoted to
this very subject. Everyone has an opinion and many people like to see
themselves as experts.
For most of us, buying or selling a home will be the largest and most
complex transaction in our lives. As a local real estate professional, I hear a lot
of the same questions over and over. Sometimes casually, in a social situation
I'm asked those very general questions, How's the market? Should I move or
renovate? What's my home worth? When I am working with buyers and
sellers, I frequently answer a separate set of more detailed questions.
The point of this column is to answer some of these questions. I will
discuss the kind of information I think anyone who is buying or selling a home
should know.
As for me, I'm an Award Winning Licensed Real Estate Agent who lives,
works and volunteers here in Bethpage. I've been working in the Number
One office here in Bethpage for 8 years. I love what I do. It's never the same
thing twice. I feel like I learn something new from every transaction.
I have seen the complete joy on the face of a young couple when they are
handed the keys to their first home, often by someone who lived many happy
years there. I've seen the sorrow when a family home must be sold due to a
death or financial reasons. Our homes are not just where we live, they are
about how we live. They are our showplaces and our refuges. Buying and
selling them, no matter the reason can be emotionally charged.
There are whole courses in law school devoted to real estate law. ( I'll talk
more about lawyers in another column). While not everyone can go to law
school, I believe that knowledge is power. I certainly will not dispense legal
advice, but I think having a basic understanding of this transaction is
information we should all possess. Within the framework of this column, I
hope to make all of this more accessible.
I often tell my clients that my job is to make this very large and emotional
transaction as smooth as possible. It's sometimes frustrating and exhausting,
but always fascinating. I hope to share my joy in this field while shedding
some light on every one's new favorite obsession.

Bethpage Runners Invited to
Rob's Run
Pictured here, Rob's Run Director Jim Murray ( L) and Harvey
Schaffler of Long island Blood Services proudly announce
plans for the 2005 edition of Rob's Run.
Runners from Bethpage and
surrounding communities are
cordially invited to be part of the
lucky 13th annual edition of Long
Island Blood Services Rob's Run, a
5 Kilometer cross country run which
will be held on Sunday morning,
November 27, 2005 at Stillwell
Woods Park in Syosset.
Rob's Run will once again be
sponsored by Long Island Blood
Services and will be conducted by
the Greater Long Island Running
Club under the direction of Race
Director James Murray. Rob's Run
includes both an individual and team
competition, and has become Long
Island's premier cross country event
and a great way to enjoy the
beauties of Stillwell Woods.
As in the past, Rob's Run is
dedicated to the memory of Rob
Lauterborn, an extraordinary human
being, talented runner, and good
friend, who was taken from us at far
too young an age. The net
proceeds of Rob's Run will once
again be turned over to the ASPIRE
Program for the rehabilitation of
young amputees, victims of bone
cancer and traumatic amputations.
If you are a veteran of Rob's Run,
or if you are otherwise familiar with
the beauties of Long Island's trails,
you know what a great morning this
is going to be. If you've never had
the nerve to try running cross
country before, this is an easy way of
introducing yourself to the wonders
of the woods and of getting an
entirely new perspective on late Fall
running. Try it; you'll like it!!!
Entry fees are $ 18 for those who
preregister and $ 20 for those who
wait till the day of the Run. ( Those
who donated a pint of blood at the
Athletes for Life Summer Blood
Drive get a free entry into Rob's
Run!) Everyone who registers is
guaranteed one of the great long
sleeve commemorative T shirts that
have been the trademark of Rob's
Run over the years.
The Run will start promptly at
9: 00 on the morning of November
27th. Registration and number/ shirt
pickup will be at Syosset High
School from 7: 30 AM to 8: 45 AM.
Rob's Run will once again feature
$ 250 team stipend to be awarded to
the first place Men's Open,
Women's Open, Men's Masters and
Women's Masters teams ( LITF
member teams only).
Unique award plaques will be
presented to the top three male and
female individual finishers overall,
and the top three male and top three
female finishers in each of 14 five
year age groups ranging from 14
and under through 75 and over.
There will also be team awards,
presented to the top three teams
( four runners per team) in each of
the following divisions: male, female
and coed open, male, female and
coed masters, male and female
senior masters ( all runners age 50
plus), middle school boys, middle
school girls, high school boys, and
high school girls. Enter as an
individual or enter as part of a team -
but don't miss November 27 for a
great morning of cross country
running!
The 2004 edition of Rob's Run
featured one of the worst days
possible from a weather standpoint.
We can't promise you that we
definitely won't have horizontal rain,
high winds, and tons of mud this
year, but our advance weather
reports for November 27 predict
blue skies, no wind and 50 degree
temperature!
For entry forms or more
information, call Linda at the GLIRC
Office at ( 516) 349- 7646.
to help customers avoid high
heating bills, but our customers can
help themselves by doing a few
simple things around the house.
Increasing efficiency and practicing
conservation will help save money
and keep you comfortable all winter
long."
Among the things customers can
do:
• Set your thermostat at 68
degrees, the optimal temperature
for a comfortable home.
• Make sure that furnace front-panel
doors fit snugly. Furnaces
without properly placed front- panel
doors may cause a build- up of
carbon monoxide.
• Check filters on furnace
regularly, and clean or replace them
if necessary.
• Vacuum and clean regularly
around heating unit, particularly
around burner compartments, to
prevent a build- up of dust and lint.
• Removed stored items in, on, or
around gas heating equipment that
can block proper airflow and remove
any combustible material within
close range of heating unit.
• This is also a good time to check
the batteries on your carbon
monoxide and fire detectors to
insure they are working properly
and, install them if you do not have
them.

Letters to the Editor
Desperate in Bethpage.
3 outdoor cats will lack food and water end of November when the
undersigned relocates from Bethpage to Florida.
Having provided food and water for these hearty cats for close to 10 years I
cannot abandon them now. They have survived and weathered inclement
climates and only come around early evening to be fed.
I am asking, and need your help, as I do not want these precious babies to
starve!
Please call Barbara at ( 516) 822- 3331 to say " help is on its way."
Barbara Quealy
Dear Linda,
Golden Age Club regrets that we are unable to have our yearly Mini Sale
this year due to low membership, after having several open house days this
past year we were unable to get any new members.
I would like to thank all the people who came to our sale every year and
also thank the merchants in Bethpage who contributed for our raffle. Final
Touch, Bretton's Deli, Ching Yeh, Bethpage Florist Boutique, Bethpage
Wine & Liquor, Lemon Tree, King Kullen.
Perhaps in another year or two we will be able to have our yearly Mini Sale.

PT. Boaters of WW II and Korea
and Vietnam Have Their Reunion
By past commander Bud
Rosch of the Butehorn VFW
Post
We all heard of the great stories
of the experiences in the wars that
these little wooden ships played in
the wars. One of the past
President's of our country was a
seaman on one of these " mini"
miniature sea weapons. President
Kennedy had some hair raising
experiences, which are well
documented. Harvey Zimmerman
and his wife Bebe, met my daughter
Anita Giebert and told her that the
P. T. Boaters " Bull Session" is going
to be at a Chinese restaurant in
Commack. Anita Giebert, my
daughter, who was born in
Bethpage, schooled in Bethpage
and married a son of Major Giebert of
Bethpage, mentioned that her
father was a flyer in WW II.
Immediately Mrs. Bebe Zimmerman
asked if her father would attend as
they would be pleased to have his
presence. When my daughter called
me to ask, I said yes and told her I
was honored by such an invitation
by a past group of sailors of our
country. I attended and of course
was introduced to all the attendees. I
found out that they do not have a
" Woman's Auxiliary." The reason for
this is, they always had their wives as
part of the crew. I thought that was
absolutely wonderful. I also thought
by attending, being I do articles for
our " little" newspaper of Bethpage,
The Bethpage Tribune, this may
prove interesting to the readers.
Now! To tell you the truth they
seemed to be more interested in
having me speak than supplying me
with some of their great stories. Well
they meet every three or four
months and enjoy some time with
each other. I myself enjoyed every
minute of it as they made me feel
very welcome and important and I
also had a delicious Chinese meal. I
wish I could have received a story
from them that was an exciting war
story for you, however I did not.
They are a great bunch of men and
women and I was proud to be
present with all of them. I will try
again, as I have been invited to
come again and maybe I will come up
with an exciting P. T. Boat story for
you readers. I think they were " shy"
to share at this moment. A young
man brought a photo album of his
father's. His father is no longer with
us, but through his son we were
able to enjoy a wonderful album of a
P. T. Boater's Memories and
Experiences. Pictured below is the
name badge art work given me on
arrival.
I myself am attending the reunion
of our 449th Bomb Group Sunday
the 25th of September in St.
Charles, Missouri right outside of St.
Louis. Our numbers were readily
depleted as we had the number one
target of the war to deal with, the
Ploesti Oil Fields, which was 40 to
60 percent of the German oil supply.
Of the 250,000 airmen that was
killed in all probability this took the
greatest number of them. Compared
to the number of flyers that were
involved, very few survived. Like the
P. T. Boaters attacking any warship,
you can imagine the firepower
thrown at them in these little
" wooden" boats.

( Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt.
Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of
heaven, blessed mother of the Son
of God, immaculate virgin, assist me
in my necessity. Oh star of the sea,
help me & show me herein, you are
my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of
God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the
bottom of my heart to succor me in
this necessity. There are none who
can withstand your power. Oh show
me herein you are my mother. Oh
Mary conceived without sin pray for
us who have recourse to thee. ( 3
times). Oh Holy Mary I place this
cause in your hands. ( 3 times). Holy
Spirit, you who solve all problems,
light all roads so that I can obtain my
goals. You gave me the divine gift to
forgive and forget all evil against me,
and that in all instances of my life,
you are with me. I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things as I
confirm once again that I never want
to be separated from you in eternal
glory. Thank you for your mercy
toward me and mine. The person
must say this prayer 3 consecutive
days, the request will be granted.
This prayer must be published after
the favor has been granted. D. B.
