Bethpage Schools Receives $ 1.08
Million For Back PILOT Payment
Bethpage Schools recently accepted a check for PILOT payments as
a result of the Calpine 3 cogeneration plant. Pictured ( l- r): Bethpage
School Board of Education Vice President Michael Kelly, Board of
Education President Thomas Frost; Legislator Ed Mangano,
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Marsh and Superintendent
for Business Joseph Marchesiello.
Bethpage School District
Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Richard S. Marsh accepted a check
for $ 1.08 million from Nassau
County on behalf of the Bethpage
School District. The check
represents Payments in Lieu of
Taxes ( PILOTs) owed to the district
from Calpine Energy Center 3
station.
Calpine 3, located on the former
Northrop Grumman site in
Bethpage, operates a co-generational
power plant, which
supplies 79.9 megawatts of
electricity to LIPA customers. The
company had not been paying taxes
or PILOTs on its facility since it
began generating power at the site
three years ago. Bethpage School
District officials alerted Nassau
County Legislator Edward Mangano
to this, and working together with
Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman
Mary McCaffery, the Nassau County
Assessors Office and LIPA officials,
the District was able to secure an
agreement for payment.
" I am happy to work with the
Bethpage School District, Board of
Education, and Superintendent
Marsh, along with Richard Kessel
and LIPA In bringing back more than
a million dollars to our community,"
said Legislator Mangano. " Working
together we can improve our
economy and bring back important
resources to our children, so we may
all contribute to making our schools
and education system an even
better place for our students."
District officials received
confirmation that the PILOT would
be made prior to setting the tax rate
this fall. Sixty- percent of the PILOTs
owed on the site ( which total $ 1.08
million) go to the Bethpage School
District. The remainder is split
between the Town and County.
" It is great when business and
industry, our elected officials,
District, and Board of Education all
work together in the interest of
children to find revenues and keep
improving our school system," said
Dr. Marsh. " We want to continue to
work together with our local officials
and everyone in our community who
do good things and great things for
our students. This relationship truly
represents what a democracy
should be; everyone working
together for the common good. This
PILOT agreement is a perfect
example of this, here in Bethpage."
The Bethpage School District
has taken an aggressive stance in
collecting unpaid PILOTs from
industries moving into sites formerly
occupied by Northrop Grumman to
protect residential taxpayers and
ensure a fair distribution of the tax
obligation.

lighting, mirrors and a less than
knowledgeable staff is next to
impossible.
Have no fear! Wardrobe expert
Kathryn Hunt will be at the library on
Thursday, November 10 at 7: 30
P. M. to teach you the techniques for
designing a wardrobe that is stylish,
flexible and fits into a budget. Learn
the trends of the current season,

style details, wardrobes that are
multi- seasonal, and of course, figure
analysis. Admission is free and

George Sand" presented by Dr.
David f^ owell, Chairman of the

George Sand was the pen name of
Aurore Dupin, one of the most
widely read and influential French
writers of the 19th Century whose
writing fell out of favor after her
death. At that point she was chiefly
remembered for her non- traditional
lifestyle and her love affairs with
Frederic Chopin and poet Alfred de
Musset. However, since the
emergence of the women's
movement in the mid 1900' s Sand's
work has been rediscovered and
enjoys renewed respect among
scholars and the public. 2004 was
the bicentenary of her birth and the
occasion for many conferences,
exhibitions and publications. A
fascinating look at a fascinating life.

N. Y. State Partnership For
Long Term Care Seminar
The New York State Partnership
for Long Term Care was created to
help New Yorkers to obtain and pay
for the long- term care services they
may need in later years. It's no secret
that the first of the Baby Boomer
generation are young seniors now!
As this huge population continues
to age, they will be among the
millions of Americans who may need
nursing home care, assisted living,
or in- home aid.
This unique program allows New
Yorkers to protect their assets while
still remaining eligible for Medicaid
extended coverage. Ask yourself if
your family would be able to cone if
you had a catastrophic illness, or old-age
related maladies. If the answer is
" no," mark your calendar for
Thursday, November 17 at 7: 30
P. M. when Kathleen Ullman will be at
the library to discuss this program
that is only available to New York
State residents. She will be happy to
answer your particular concerns at
the end of the presentation.
Admission is free and everyone is
welcome to attend.
The library is located at 47 Powell
Avenue, three blocks west of Exit
# 8 on the Seaford- Oyster Bay
Expressway ( Route # 135), phone

SIMON SAYS
Do you have a suggestion or a comment you need to get off your chest explaining
just what needs to be done to correct a situation? Do you have a pet peeve that is
just driving you crazy and you just have to share? Well, here is your chance. Every
month in the Tribune we will be featuring a new column called S/ MON S/ WS.
This column will be a very informal setting for readers to air their " do this*'
suggestions or " stop that" comments. Submissions to this column can include
pictures and should be signed. If your comments are general in nature your name
can be omitted. This column is quite different from " Your 37 Cents" in that we are
asking for brief comments about things you are bothered by or would like to see
happen. So now is the time to get all those thoughts off your chest... and
why... because SIMON SAYS!
SIMON SAYS. • . SLOWDOWN!! I just hate it when people
are in such a hurry that they speed and cut you off. These silly folks always seem
to be in such a rush, yet all their speeding doesn ' t help them avoid the RED
LIGHT that is up ahead. In fact it is usually the same red light that I am stopped
at although I didn ' t have to speed to get there! - A. S.
SIMON SAYS > STOP! Why is it that when the railroad
crossings flash their red lights and ring their bells, people just don V seem to get
the hint to STOP? These lights and signs indicate that a train is coming and trying
to beat a train is a foolish game! - A. S.
S/ MON SAYS • • . DON'T BE SO NASTY. I wish the
resident who sends in a nasty, unsigned, ransom - like letter every now and again
circling our typographical errors or comma omissions would put his or her talent
to better use and volunteer some time to help us proofread! Perhaps if they
volunteered some time to help out they would realize that it just ain't so easy
publishin' a local newspaper! Yea and I know ain ' t - ain ' tproper either!
- Guess Who
S/ MON SAYS... WR/ TE IN! I hope people
write in to this silly column. Send your comments to the Tribune, ATTN: Simon
Says, 329 Broadway, Bethpage, New York 11714. Special thanks are send to a
bunch very special SIMONS who were the inspiration for this column!

Silver Rose Memorial Dedicated
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, right, gets a

Vietnam Veterans of America, Nassau County Chapter # 82, at
last weekend's Silver Rose Memorial Dedication held in
Marjorie Post Town Park in Massapequa.
Charles Spencer of Dignity Memorial donated the monument
and Supervisor Venditto provided a permanent place which
now honors those who served in the Vietnam War and fell
victim to Agent Orange. This is the first memorial of its kind
outside of Washington D. C. and was erected to remind us of
the sacrifice made by over 300000 veterans who are affected
by the chemical defoliant.

assistance of Steve Labriola and Ed Mangano. Ron McDonnell
regularly educates coaches on the proper use of the
Automated External Defibrillator's ( AED). Every year sudden
cardiac arrest claims the lives of more than 250,000 people;
fewer than 50% of the victims survive largely because
defibrillators do not reach them in time. Having the AED's and
properly trained people will greatly increase the survival rate.

6 Hour - 60th Birthday Run
The 6- Hour 60th Birthday Run
hosted by the Greater Long Island
Running Club on October 16, 2005
presents many facets.
First and foremost it is a trail ultra,
conducted over a 2.07 mile loop in
Sunken Meadow State Park that
challenges the competitors with
several hills every time they traverse
it. " Hill" is a relative term, of course,
but what seems like a relatively easy
upgrade in the first hour of the Run
becomes a mighty mountain by the
15th loop in the sixth hour.
Special congratulations to 65
year old Bethpage runner Jean
Vanturini, who logged 22.23 miles in
this year's Run, earning her 50th
place overall. Jean was

Lung Walk
The American Lung Association
of New York State ( ALANYS), an
organization committed to
preventing lung disease and
promoting better lung health, will
host two Lung Walk events on
Saturday, November 5, 2005 on
Long Island and Sunday, November
6, 2005 in Westchester. The events
will raise funds to help support the
organization's fight against lung
disease.
ALANYS understands the need
to reach out to all people afflicted
with lung disease. The 2005 Lung
Walk will raise vital fundraising dollars
to help people who suffer from
asthma, lung cancer and Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
( COPD), as well as promote cleaner
air.
Money raised from the 2005
Lung Walk will go toward research,
advocacy and public and
professional education.
" Lung disease affects growing
numbers in our community each
year - lung cancer is the leading
cancer killer of men and women in
the U. S., asthma affects close to 20
million Americans, and COPD is the
fourth leading cause of death in
America," said Stanton H. Hudson,
president and CEO of American
Lung Association. " Every dollar
earned from the 2005 Lung Walk
gets us one step closer to reaching
our goal of eradicating lung
disease."
Lung Walk participants will seek
pledges from individuals throughout
the community. In addition to
sponsoring a walker, anyone
wishing to contribute to the Lung
Walk can do so online at
www. alanys. org.
Anyone interested in registering
or learning more about the Lung
Walk can visit www. alanys. org or call

Over five million New Yorkers have no prescription drug coverage,

Bethpage Block Party
Helps The Big Easy
Pictured left to right: The Brewer, The Fred, The Tunnicliffe,
The Alberti, The Conway, and The Hydo Families. The Johneas
Family was unavailable for photo.
On Labor Day Weekend, for the
past 10 years N. 5th Street has
hosted a Block Party to bring a close
to Summer. Every year the 7- 10
houses pick a theme and all the
activities for the day focuses on that
theme. We have been told that our
Block Party is the most enjoyable
one around! This year our theme
was the Mardi Gras. We had 7
houses that participated in our block
party, and besides being fun filled, it
was also heart filled. The following
was given to each of the 7 families
and their guests in hopes of raising a
few dollars for the Hurricane victims.
" How ironic is it that we picked
the Mardi Gras Theme to
commemorate the 10th Anniversary
of our block party, when only a few
short days ago, New Orleans the
very city that gave us Mardi Gras was
destroyed by the wrath of Hurricane
Katrina! As we watch the images on
the television, we can only imagine
what these poor people are going
through. One image that stood out
in my mind was that of a leveled
home with only one beam standing,
and adorning that lonely beam is the
American Flag. It brought me to tears
and back to 9/ 11, and how we in
New York were clinging to each
other and trying to cope with the
turmoil we were experiencing at that
time. Just like we did in New York
after 9/ 11, the people of New
Orleans and the surrounding areas
need our help! We would like to
donate a portion of our fund raising
proceeds to these people to show
our support; and to help in making
their recovery a little easier to bear!"
The sale of our 10th Anniversary
T- Shirts, and a portion of our raffle
sales, and the bottle/ can returns
went to aid the Hurricane Victims.
We sent around a coffee can asking
for loose change, and instead of just
pocket change we got $ 10' s and
$ 20' s. Our little block collected over
$ 500.00 for the Hurricane Victims!
We " adopted" a family of 7 ( Mom,
Dad and 5 children ages 7- 16), who
are staying at a shelter in Houston,
and we will be sending packages to
them throughout the coming
months.
The families of N. 5th Street
would like to thank everyone for
their overwhelming support and
generosity!

Bethpage Schools Recognized as
One of the Top Academic
Performers in NYS
Nassau Legislator Edward Mangano awards Bethpage School
District officials with a citation for being one of the state's top
academic performers. Pictured ( l- r) Board of Education Vice
President Michael Kelly, Board President Tom Frost, Nassau
County Legislator Ed Mangano, Superintendent of Schools Dr.
Richard Marsh, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and
Technology Terry Clark.
Nassau County Legislator
Edward Mangano recently
presented a citation to the
Bethpage Schools for being named
as one of only 47 school districts
statewide ( there are close to 700
school districts in New York State) to
receive the distinction of a " High
Performing/ Gap Closing" District.
The District received this
distinction for surpassing " adequate
yearly progress" standards in
English Language Arts,
Mathematics and Science and
graduation rate. State Education
Commissioner Richard Mills recently
wrote to Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Richard S. Marsh, congratulating
him on the honor.
Legislator Mangano's citation is in
recognition of all the hard work of
faculty members, administrators,
staff, students, parents, and the
Bethpage Board of Education.

Bethpage Colts Clip the Falcons
On Sunday afternoon, October
30th, the Bethpage Colts and
Bethpage Falcons met in the final
LIFFL/ TOB NFL JV flag football
regular season game. The
Bethpage Colts, coached by Rich
Soto, came away with the victory
shutting down the Falcons 48- 0.
The Bethpage Colts stellar
defense was led by Chuck
Hoffman's two interceptions ( one
run back for a touchdown) and
anchored by the entire defense
including Mark Soto, Troy Hill, Tyler
Walsh, Nick Chiarelli, Ryan Vaglica,
and Mike O'Brien.
The high powered offense was
co- directed by Chuck Hoffman and
Troy Hill, who both shared
quarterbacking duties. Every player
contributed on offense and the
scoring included Chuck Hoffman's
60- yard electrifying touchdown run
and three passing touchdowns,
Troy Hill's two passing touchdowns
and extra point catch, Tvler Walsh's
spectacular two touchdown grabs,
Nick Chiarelli's sensational two
touchdown grabs and extra point
catch, Mike O'Brien's mesmerizing
touchdown grab and extra point
pass and Mark Soto's superlative
three extra point conversions.
Special attention goes to Ryan
Vaglica who made numerous
catches, one extra point catch, and
whose blazing speed opened up
the passing lanes for his teammates.
Other team members that have
made tremendous contributions this
season and were not in attendance
are Kevin De Castro, Colleen
Ramos, Joseph Iglesias, Jeremy
Sola, and Mike Jacovelli.
The Bethpage Colts ended the
season with a 3- 3 record (. 500
record) and have made the playoffs.
The first playoff game is scheduled
for Sunday, November 6th at 12
Noon, Tudor Field versus the
undefeated Plainview Falcons.

Your car is the second largest
investment you're likely to make.
Preserve its value and your safety by
having it repaired professionally.
Some insurance companies may
want you to visit their drive- in claims
center before having your car
repaired. You can do this, or you may
leave your car at our shop and ask
that the insurance company inspect
the car here.
There is no law requiring you to
obtain more than one estimate or
appraisal.
You have the right to go to the repair
shop of your choice. Your insurance
company cannot require you to go to
a particular shop.
Differences in repair estimates are
common. A lower estimate may not
include all necessary work. If you're
not sure why one estimate is different
from another you've received, please
ask us.
Let us help you negotiate your claim
with the insurance company.
