Lt. Col. Michael McCaffery is the
son of Jack and Councilwoman Mary
McCaffery. A life long Bethpage
resident and a 1984 graduate of our
Bethpage High School. After
graduation he attended Stonehill
College in northeastern MA and in
1988 graduated with a Bachelors
Degree in economics. Having been
a member of the college R. O. T. C.
he was commissioned as a 2nd
Lieutenant in the United States
Army.
A career soldier he was promptly
sent to Fort Benning, Georgia for
training as a Ranger, which was
completed in 1989. Col. McCaffery
was assigned to the 10th Special
Forces Group ( Airborne) stationed at
Fort Devens, Massachusetts and in
1990 received his Baptism of Fire in
Operation Desert Storm with a
Special forces unit on covert
operations in northern Iraq.
In 1991 he was stationed in
Turkey to assist refugee Kurds
returning to their homes at the end
of Desert Storm and witnessed first
hand the devastation of war. Women
and children were struggling to get
enough food to sustain life from the
U. S. airdrops. He witnessed the
degradation and death among the
thousands of Kurds forced from
their homes during the war with Iraq.
A memory that will stay with him for
the rest of his life. He returned to
Turkey in 1992 during Operation
Provide Comfort II.
In 1993 he was awarded the
Army Commendation Medal for
" meritorious service with the 10th
Special Forces Group ( Airborne).
Promoted to Captain in 1994, Col.
McCaffery was then assigned as a
company commander in the 8th
Army on a peacekeeping mission in
Korea.
After his tour of duty in Korea he
was stationed at Ft. Meyer, assigned
to the Old Guard and served as a
ceremonial and communications
officer. Serving in the Old Guard is a
distinct honor bestowed on only the
very finest of soldiers by the U. S.
Army. In this capacity he bore
witness to many historical events
and had the opportunity to meet
many of our world leaders.
In 2002 Col. McCaffery received
a Masters Degree from the
Command and General Staff College
in Ft. Leavenworth and was
promoted to the rank of Major. Sent
to Germany he was assigned to the
First Infantry Division ( Big Red One)
in the Signal Corps.
It was off to Kosovo in 2003 on a
peacekeeping mission.
During 2004 and 2005 Mike was
stationed in Tikrit, which was a hot
bed of insurgent activity. He was
awarded a Bronze Star for
" meritorious service during
Operation Iraqi Freedom II. The
121st Signal Battalion's outstanding
support in providing continuous,
redundant, tactical communication
support to the 1st Infantry Division's
area of responsibility ensured Task
Force Danger's success in
conducting precise, intelligence
driven combat operations that
neutralized the anti- Iraq forces and
set conditions for local control and

Tips For Getting Your
Fireplace Ready
With cooler weather upon us,
Hearth & Home Technologies, the
nation's largest hearth manufacturer,
urges homeowners to get their
fireplace ready for the heating
season. By having a professional
service the fireplace annually and
taking a few proactive steps on their
own, homeowners can ensure
greater heating efficiency and
safety, as well as prolong the life of
the unit.
Many homeowners mistakenly
believe their fireplace does not
require any maintenance. The fact is
all fireplace types from wood to gas
to electric should undergo annual
maintenance. For example, gas
fireplaces need the fan, pilots and
burners checked each year. And
wood fireplaces require an
inspection and chimney cleaning to
remove creosote, which can build
up and cause chimney fires.
Homeowners should also check the
chimney or vent before the season's
first fire to see if birds or animals
have built nests in it, or if leaves or
other debris have accumulated. At a
minimum, homeowners should also
install a carbon- monoxide alarm in
the same room as the fireplace and
another one near the bedroom.
Homeowners can handle much
of the day- to- day maintenance;
however, most tasks are better left
to a professional. Here are some tips
for getting the fireplace ready and
keeping it in tip top shape this
winter.
Woodbuming fireplaces
• Clean out the firebox at least
every week when using the fireplace
regularly, but leave an inch of ash in
the bottom to act as insulation.
NOTE: Never use a vacuum to clean
out the firebox as coals can stay hot
for several days after extinguishing a
fire.
• Before removing ash, open the
damper so loose ash is drawn up the
chimnev rather than out into the
room.
• Remove all ash during the
months the fireplace is not in use.
• Burn only seasoned or hard
wood in the fireplace. This will help
minimize creosote buildup in the
chimney. Burning small, controlled,
hot fires rather than smoldering fires
will also help keep creosote under
control.
Gas fireplaces
• Vacuum the firebox and heat
exchanger regularly ( only when the
fireplace is cold, of course) to keep
efficiency and air quality high.
• Consult a professional to clean
the pilot assembly, purge trapped air
from the gas supply line, and then
test- fire the fireplace.
• Use only a soft brush to remove
dust or spider webs from gas logs
since they can be fragile. Make sure
to position logs properly after
cleaning to avoid sooting.
• Use glass cleaner made
especially for gas fireplaces to clean
the glass front - never use oven
cleaner or abrasives.
Electric fireplaces
• Clean the firebox and control
compartment with a brush and
vacuum.
• Never use glass cleaner to
clean the back of the glass, use only
mild soap and water. Remove dust
particles from glass by simply buffing
lightly with a clean, dry cloth.
• Replace the light bulbs about
every two to three years or when the
flame and/ or ember bed is dark on
one side.
• Follow the manufacturer's
instructions or consult a professional
on cleaning the heater system to
extend the fan's life.
Hearth & Home Technologies is
the world's largest fireplace
manufacturer and a leading provider
of hearth products for the home.

Technologies can be found at

USA Track & Field Cross Country
Disabilities Championship Meet
Special thanks to Nassau County Legislator David Mejias ( L)
for his incredible personal support for the event. Legislator
Mejias is pictured here at the Meet with first place overall
finisher Dan Renahan of the Rolling Thunder Team for Special
Needs Athletes.
By Gina Gelman
I had the privilege to volunteer at
the inaugural USATF Cross Country
Championship for the Disabled held
in Sunken Meadow State Park on
Sunday, October 2, 2005. I have
never derived so much satisfaction
from an event in the 20+ years I have
been volunteering in the running
community. This championship,
spearheaded by Rolling Thunder's
Steve Cuomo, was taken from
concept to execution with the
support of LITF, GLIRC, USATF,
politicians, businesspeople and
other local sponsors.
The field may have been small,
but those athletes fortunate enough
to participate were treated to a safe
and challenging course overseen by
veteran officials. Those officiating
included Barbara Chambers ( Chair of
the USATF Committee for Sports for
the Disabled), Denise Hutchins
( Vice Chair USATF Committee for
Sports for the Disabled), Al Orr
( Official and Committee for Sports
for the Disabled Support Staff),
Susan Polansky ( Past LITF
President, Chair of Program
Development for LITF and Treasurer
USATF National Officials Committee)
and Michael Scott ( Chair of the
USATF Cross Country Council) - In
other words the cream of the crop,
these officials, from around the
united States, came in specifically
for the event from as far away as
Nevada, Oklahoma and Florida. In
addition to their race day
responsibilities, on Saturday they
coordinated the classification
process for each of the athletes
( whereby participants are placed in
competitive groups based on their
specific disabilities).
Due to the nature of the crosscountry
course and the variety of
disabilities represented in the field, a
critical factor toward the success of
this championship was manpower
on the day of the event. Well, " seek
and ye shall receive!" There were
187 volunteers lining the 5 kilometer
course - that is unprecedented in my
memory and a true testament to not
only the athletes who took part, but
the dedication of volunteer
coordinator Len Montlack, the
organizing bodies and all the
individuals and groups who
committed their time and
enthusiasm for the morning.
When I was asked to help out at
this championship, I expected it to
be " just" another race, was I ever
wrong. This was a special event to
be a part of and one that truly
touched me very deeply, and I
imagine that each and every
participant, official, volunteer and
spectator walked away feeling as
fortunate to have been a part of it as I
did.
The single most emotional
lesson I took away from this
experience is the true definition of
sportsmanship, Sportsmanship
demonstrated by each and every
one of the athletes who took part. It
wasn't about the running - they
weren't in it for the glory or the
trophy, but Tor the purest and'most
basic of reasons, their love of the
sport, the camaraderie of their
teammates and the joy of being a
participant. I learned a lot from these
athletes and walked away with my
spirits high. These individuals
should be recognized for their
abilities, not their disabilities, and in
the words of Steve Cuomo: " We
think WE are always the teachers,
and that is not always necessarily
true."

Kramer Kids Discover Long
Island's Natives
First grade classes at the Kramer
Lane Elementary School in the
Bethpage School District were visited
by LI Arts & Science Program
Educator Mrs. Yablon to kick off their
Native American Social Studies unit.
The PTA sponsored workshop
focused on the early days of Long
Island Native American culture when
pilgrims first settled in America.
Different types of landscapes,
wildlife, and foliage and how they
served as food, shelter, clothing,
and even entertainment for Long
Island's Natives were discussed.
Mrs. Yablon went into detail as to
how tools were made from the existing
environment. Students were
asked to determine the functions of
certain objects used by the Tribes
and develop solutions for the common
challenges they faced on a
daily basis.
The Long Island Native American
Workshop educated students
beyond just the social history of
Long Island's first inhabitants.
Students took away new knowledge
of practical problem solving skills,
earth science, linguistics and music
from this informative and interactive
program.
LI Arts & Science Program Educator Mrs. Yablon shares examples of
Long Island Native American tools and the natural components they
were made from with Bethpage School District's Kramer Lane first
graders during a PTA sponsored workshop. Pictured ( l- r) Guest

Sometimes when a major tragedy
strikes, there is a feeling of
helplessness, a sensation that this is
so much bigger than our own
capabilities. Action is not easy in
such circumstances, but doing
nothing is NOT an option for some
students at Bethpage High School.
When Hurricane Katrina devastated
the Gulf Coast, the entire nation
witnessed the physical damage it
brought and many felt helpless,
cognizant of the emotional damage
that was to follow.
In addition to sending money to
the Red Cross and America's
Second Harvest, the students of
Bethpage High Schools Student
Civic Association decided to do
something a bit different and
special. Joining with The Peace
Alliance
( www. thepeacealliance. org), BHS
Student Civic took part in a program
for the month of October called,
" Youth- to- Youth Hugs Project." For
a $ 6.00 donation, a student could
buy a small, teddy bear and write a
message of support and hope, and
messages of hope to children

attach it to the bear to be sent to a
child who lost so much in the wake
of Hurricane Katrina. The goal: to
help soothe the aching spirits of the
children affected and to
demonstrate that there are those
who do care. Bethpage High School
Student Civic members saw the
value in this gesture, as did several
Kramer Lane Elementary School
students. As the idea spread, a
security guard, a teacher's aide,
several teachers themselves
participated in the endeavor. One
teacher, Mrs. Schlesinger, even
bought some bears for her Child
Psychology class and had her
students sign the tags with their
wishes attached.
" Sometimes," said Jacqueline
Rito, club advisor for the BHS
Student Civic Association, " even
the smallest gesture of caring and
concern can produce results that
teach valuable lessons. And
oftentimes, those lessons grow
even more in meaning as time goes

Although we cannot hold you
You will live inside our heart
Although you are not with us
We never are apart
You are a special angel
God took you in his hand
And while we know you ' re safe

We know it is so hard
Because we all love you
We miss you so very much

EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK
By Linda Mangano
When you lose someone that you love it almost seems as though time
stands still. Life as you knew it seems so different, so changed and so
unbearable. It is at those times that we question ourselves and our very
existence. And yet, we all manage in some way or another to try and move
on. During those first few days you ' re not even able to comprehend what has
happened. Everything seems to be a big blur. During the next few weeks
however, the loss sinks in and you realize that it is all real. During the next
few months you begin to cope, never completely getting rid of the pain, but
somehow learn to smile and live again. Never quite the same— but living
nonetheless. After a year you begin to reflect and you realize that during this
time of grieving you have learned so much. Yes, learned so much. November
15 marked the one- year anniversary that my niece was killed in a tragic car
accident and although it seems like an unlikely comment to make, during this
past year Claudette taught me more lessons than you could ever image.
Claudette taught me to hug my kids every day just a little bit harder and
longer. She taught me to not sweat the small stuff and try to focus on what
really matters. ( In her words " suck it up- Cupcake!") She taught me about
understanding and patience and she taught me that friends are a wonderful
gift. Claudette, during this past year, showed me that the most important
thing I could ever be is a mother and that my family should always be the
most important thing in my life. And she taught me that a pierced tongue isn ' t
the worst thing in the world ( okay, I'm still not too sure of that one). Her
spirit reminds me that no matter how bad things may seem they really aren 7
that bad. She taught me to enjoy each and every day to it's fullest because
tomorrow is not a guarantee. Claude, without a single word, has taught me
that no one can take away a memory, not even death and thai life is just too
short to have any regrets. I guess you could say that Claudette's passing has
taught me how to live. Most important though she made me realize that she is
never really gone, nor are any of our loved ones who have passed away.
Their memories, their love and the lessons they have taught all of us is what
keeps them alive in our hearts and in our minds.
So to Claudette, I say thank you for teaching me so much this past year,
although I must say that although you taught me all these lessons about life, I
still find that it is just not the same without you. Please know how much you
are missed and how much we all ache. Yet, in our hearts, we know you will
always be with us. We will feel you with every breeze; see you in every ray of
sunshine and in every star in the sky. We ' 11 remember you with every jar of
peppericinis; in every twinkling smile and in everything we do because you
are simply unforgettable. Nothing can take away a love that a heart holds so
dear. Thank you for wonderful memories that still make us smile and laugh
and remember. Most of all we thank you for teaching us all a lesson or two,
or three or four about life and how precious it is and how precious you are
and always will be to everyone who was touched by you.
A special note of thanks is sent to so many caring and supportive people
in this wonderful community . You have all been so kind, understanding and
compassionate during this past year. Your support and love have helped
everyone more than you will ever know and our entire family thanks you with
all our hearts. Deepest sympathy is also extended to the Nakamori family on
the loss of their son Sho, who died tragically a year ago as well. Our
compassion is extended to their entire family.

Music filled Good Shepherd
Lutheran Church, Plainview last
Sunday when the choirs of Good
Shepherd Church, Long Island
Lutheran Middle and High School
Choirs, the POBJFK High School
Quartet and other local musicians
joined in a concert to benefit Batten
Disease research. The concert was
in honor of Ryan Faret of Deer Park,

who has this fatal disease that
affects children. Local boy scout
troop 423 acted as ushers and
greeters for the concert. Special
guests included other children

country western songs,
" Unanswered Prayers" by Garth
Brooks.
Ryan's family thanked everyone
for their support, especially the local
kids who gathered together to help
those children who suffer from
