" Talent for Helping"
Bethpage High School students,
members of the community, and
local celebrities joined forces to help
those in need on Long Island and in
the Gulf Coast The Bethpage High
School Student Civic Association
was thrilled to host the 2005 Student
Civic Talent Show on November 3.
Proceeds from the evening benefited
Island Harvest, an organization
working to eliminate food waste and
hunger on Long Island and
America's Second Harvest, a relief
fund to aid the victims of Hurricane
Katrina.
The Bethpage High School Civic
Talent Show serves as a venue for
emerging student talent both on and
off stage. " Today's teens have a lot
of energy, talent and caring to give.
Not enough positive news is diffused
about them," commented Student
Civic Organization Advisor J. Jill-
Rito. " Our students rose to the occasion
& were able to a have a good
time with their families, friends and
community and maintain the objective
of giving to others less fortunate."
Students from throughout
Bethpage High School did their part
to make this a worthwhile event.
Some performed their song, dance,
and comedy acts; others canvassed
the streets to ask local merchants
for raffle donations; while some sold
tickets and refreshments, organized
lineups, or simply assist judges the
night of the event.
" The talent show is a wonderful
opportunity for students to put their
talents out there to be seen while
helping a great cause at the same
time," shared Danielle Olverd,
Student Civic Organization Vice
President. " It showcases what we
are capable of accomplishing on
stage and in the community. The
Student Civic Organization is proud
to be a part of this tradition."
The energy level was felt by all its
participants. " I am in the unique
position of being both a judge and a

Healthy Eating For the Holidays
Although the holiday season is
surrounded by tempting desserts
and deliciously festive meals, it does
not have to be a time for overeating
and gaining weight. Here are a few
tips that will allow you to enjoy
holiday foods while maintaining your
weight.
• Eat more fruits, vegetables, and
whole grains: These foods are high
in vitamins, minerals, and fiber and
are naturally low in fat and calories.
Limit the butter, sour cream, and
other high fat dressings.
• Be aware of portion sizes: Enjoy
a variety of foods. However, try to
cut back on portion sizes of those
foods high in calories, fat, sodium,
and sugar.
• Eat slowlv and know when to
stop: Eat slowly so you can enjoy
what you are eating. Stop eating
when you are comfortably satisfied,
not uncomfortably full.
• Drink plenty of water: It will help
to fill you up and allow you to reduce
your portion sizes.
• Plan ahead: Don't skip meals.
People who skip meals usually
overindulge when they finally do
eat. Allow some time to exercise
before attending a dinner party to
burn some extra calories.
• Be more active during your
holiday celebrations: Start a new
tradition such as a family basketball
or football game or go for a walk
before or after dinner. Being more
physically active will help to speed
up your metabolism.

Keeping Foods Safe
This Holiday Season
During the holiday season, many
of us are planning to prepare and
serve food for family and friends.
This can be an enjoyable
experience; however, it is very
important to follow the safety
guidelines listed below to keep your
food safe from bacteria that can
cause foodborne illness.
• Shopping: Purchase
refrigerated and frozen items after
selecting your non- perishables and
plan to go directly home from the
grocery store to put foods in the
refrigerator/ freezer.
• Cleanliness: Wash your hands,
cutting boards, utensils, and
counter tops before and after
preparing food. Keep raw meat,
poultry, seafood, and eggs separate
from ready- to- eat foods to avoid
cross- contamination.
• Thawing food: Use the
refrigerator or the microwave. Never
defrost food on the kitchen counter.
If using the microwave, cook food
immediately.
• Marinating food: Always
marinate meat and poultry in a
covered dish in the refrigerator.
• Cooking foods to a safe
temperature: Use a meat
thermometer to cook foods to a safe
internal temperature to kill bacteria.
• Serving food: Keep hot foods
at 140QF or warmer by using chafing
dishes, slow cookers, and warming
trays. Keep cold foods at 40gF or
colder by nesting dishes in bowls of
ice. Discard foods sitting at room
temperature for more than two
hours.
• Storing leftovers: Divide large
quantities into smaller containers
and refrigerate immediately. Use
leftovers within four days.
• Throwing food away: Never
reuse marinades, breading, or
coatings. If you have any doubt
about whether to throw foods away
or to keep it, throw it away. Tasting
the food could be dangerous.

REAL

MATTERS
fey Gina McGovern
This time of year, it is traditional to look back and reflect on your blessings.
Well, I've always been a traditional type of gal, so I'm going to step out of my
usual box here, and do just that. I think being thankful is important. It reminds
us to look outside ourselves occasionally. Along with saying " Please," " thank
you" is one of the first things we teach our children.
Over the last 15 or so years, one or more of my children will come home
with a Thanksgiving themed decoration. On that decoration will be carefully
recorded what specific thing my children announced they were thankful for.
Depending on their age or mood, or what the kid in front of them said, their
answers have been a tiny glimpse into their hearts. The responses have
gone from the prosaic, ( potatoes and peanut butter), to the sweet, ( going to
the carwash with Daddy), to the slightly unusual, ( George W. Bush and
Fashion).
Most adults have a fairly standard list. They are grateful for health, loved
ones, a nice place to live, food on the table and a way to provide for their
families. In that respect, my list would certainly be typical.
I'm blessed with a lovely family, a husband who is eternally patient and
extremely supportive and still loves me after all these years. My children are
an endless source of love and joy to me. They are kind, good people with
generous spirits and marvelous sense of humor. I'm both proud and in awe of
them.
I'm thankful that I have enough in my life. We have a nice home, and the
means to provide for ourselves and our children. We live in a community that
has a wonderful spirit. God has indeed been good to me.
But I am thankful for more than this. I'm eternally grateful to my parents,
who gave of themselves to provide me with a strong sense of self and
community. I'm grateful that my father is still with us at 90, and his seemingly
endless fountain of knowledge is only a phone call away. My mother always
said the debt you owe to your parents gets paid to your children. Like most of
her sayings, I understand that so much better now.
I have wonderful friends who have celebrated the good and consoled
over the bad. I'm glad to be a part of a large family that includes siblings who
share a common past that they have vowed not to repeat to our children. And
those children, my nieces and nephews are a diverse, lovely and energetic
group who gladly share all of that with their Aunt Gina.
As I reflect back, I'm thankful for every customer whose home I've listed
and those to whom I have sold a home. I'm glad for the ones who I didn't sell.
Everyone of those people and experiences have enriched and educated
me. I'm fortunate to be working with a fine, kind and generous group of
agents and support staff. I'm lucky to be working in a field I love.
I'm grateful to live in the country I do. Where participatory government
means we all get a say in how things are run. We have the freedom to
disagree when they aren't run as we think they should.
I will always be grateful to the young men and women serving our country
in places I can't even pronounce, let alone find on a map. They are away from
their families to protect and defend our right to be grateful. God Bless them
all.
Lastly, I am thankful to all of you who have said kind things to me about this
column. I hope you will all continue to have blessings to be thankful for this
year and in the future. I promise to go back to writing about real estate matters
next time!

Neighborhood Kids Get
Together for a Hurricane Katrina
Relief Fundraiser.
Some of the children in
Bethpage got together to have a
lemonade stand on Thursday,
. September 15, 2005, on Spruce
Avenue. They decided that they
wanted to help the people who were
affected by Hurricane Katrina. Some
very generous patrons made it
possible for them to have raised
$ 500. One of the families, the
Dowd's, works for Progressive
Insurance Co. Their company
offered to match any money made
by 200%. The Dowd's also held a
garage/ bake sale on Saturday,
September 17, 2005 for the
fundraiser where neighborhood kids
again helped out and made $ 600.
Therefore, the total donation thanks
to Progressive will be $ 3300! Nice
work everyone.

child who ever heard the beloved,
' Twinkle Twinkle" lullaby was uniquely
answered for third grade students
of Charles Campagne Elementary
School in the Bethpage School
District. Through a PTA sponsored
program entitled " Night Sky," students
had the opportunity to experience
the stars and planets and learn
" what they are" with the help of the
Night Sky/ Starlab.
The large inflatable Starlab Dome
allows students to view clearly the
night sky at even the brightest hour
of day. Being able to view the planets
and constellations up- close in a
controlled environment, coupled
with informative instruction, helped
to convey current science curriculum
to the Charles Campagne's third
grade students.
" We do this workshop every year
because it enforces what students
are learning in their third grade science
class," commented PTA
Cultural Arts Committee member
Barbara Hayes. " The children get to
enter a giant portable planetarium
and enjoy an excellent overview of
the birth, structure and motion of the
planets. They can discuss,. in detail,
specific planets that are currently
visible in the night sky while inside
the Starlab dome."
The interactive workshop combines
the physical and social science
aspects of astronomy, as well
as the history of space exploration
and its discoveries. " Our program
strives to include and incorporate all
parts of astronomy," said Starlab
Educator Kim Barclay. " Night
Sky/ Starlab blends hard science,
history and storytelling to make the
presentation educational and enjoyable."
For the students, the workshop
created an adventure as exciting as
the night sky itself. All that was missing
were the clouds and crickets.

Holiday Lighting of Farmingdale's
Tricentennial Tree
The holiday lighting of the Village
of Farmingdale's Tricentennial Tree,
a tradition which began in 1989, will
take place Wednesday, November
30 at 6 pm at the Gazebo on the
Village Green, adjacent to Villaae
Hall.
The Sixth Grade Chorus of Howitt
Middle School, under the direction
of Edward Kozlowski, and the South
Shore Brass Ensemble will provide
seasonal music.
The annual event is an outgrowth
of Farmingdale's Tricentennial of
Settlement celebration in 1987. A
community coalition of some three
dozen organizations conducted a
yearlong program of
commemorations that year, recalling
the original settlement of this area by
Thomas Powell and his family in
1687.
Afterward this group purchased a
Colorado blue spruce tree which
was presented to the Village of
Farmingdale as a continuing symbol
of the commemoration during
Farmingdale's fourth century.
In addition to the Village,
sponsors of the event include the
Farmingdale- Bethpage Historical
Society, the Farmingdale Chamber
of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club
of Farmingdale. Refreshments will
be served in Village Hall immediately
after the program, courtesy of the
Kiwanis Club, also a longtime
tradition.

The Bethpage P. A. L. Pony Eagles defeated the Rosedale
Jets 13- 6 in Rosedale for a playoff victory. This team made up
of 24 players, 23 of them being 11 year olds competed all year
with teams of 11 and 12 year olds. This incredible season was
due to the boys executing a flawless wishbone offense. Our
defense ever so strong helped to bring this accomplishment at
the Pony level. A big congratulations to all the boys and our
coaching staff.
This Saturday, November 26th at 3: 00 in North Babylon,
they will be playing in the Super Bowl.
Come Support Bethpage.
Falcons Going to Championship
The Bethpage Falcons beat the
Plainview Chiefs 19- 13 and have
advanced to the L I . Championship.
The Falcons struck first with a Danny
Ligowski quarterback sneak for 25
yards into the end zone. Jimmy
Limpert found Ryan McManus over
the middle to score the ever
important extra point and the
Falcons were off to a great start. It
was now the defense's turn to step
up and they did first with a goal line
stand and then an interception by
Anthony ( Nails) Colletta. The
Falcons marched down the field with
a solid air attack with Danny Ligowski
throwing passes to Nick Kelly for a
gain of 10 yards, a pass to Jake
Rotunno who dodged several
defenders to gain 25 yards and the
drive was cornpieiea with a ptiss
over the top to Jimmy ( Big Country)
Limpert. The final score of the game
was a ten play drive capped off with
Zachary Licht catching the ball all
alone in the back of the end zone.
The stingy defense did a great job
as well with a fantastic effort from
Dylan Reggio, Eric Adams, Brendan
Hoffman and Sean Ryan. The
Falcons dedicated the win to their
sick teammate Joe Mongan ( some
call him Morgan) who wanted to play
so bad but could not because of the
flu. Coaches Brian Limpert and Tom
McManus were proud of the Falcons
efforts and are so happy for this
tough group of kids. So, if you want
to see some good football come out
for the championship game on
Sunday,. November 27, 1: 30 p. m. at
John Burns Park and check for the
Falcons as they take on the Bayville
Jets for the L. I. Championship.

WS4T i- rrs;
Your car is the second largest
investment you're likely to make.
Preserve its value and your safety by
having it repaired professionally.
Some insurance companies may
want you to visit their drive- in claims
center before having your car
repaired. You can do this, or you may
leave your car at our shop and ask
that the insurance company inspect
the car here.
There is no law requiring you to
obtain more than one estimate or
appraisal.
You have the right to go to the repair
shop of your choice. Your insurance
company cannot require you to go to
a particular shop.
Differences in repair estimates are
common. A lower estimate may not
include all necessary work. If you're
not sure why one estimate is different
from another you've received, please
ask us.
Let us help you negotiate your claim
with the insurance company.
