- Another War Story
( Bud Rosch past cmdr of Butehorn Bros. VFW Post 4987 Bethpage)
This story is retrieved from
Captain Thomas Dent Ret. of the US
Navy, he relates a story of these
" little wooden" PT Boats. These
Boats was what our President
Kennedy served on in WW II.
Service on these boats took much
courage as they would attack an
enemy warship to fire their
torpedoes in line for a solid hit. This

means that the " little wooden ships"
took tremendous fire power from
these war ships that were armed to
the " teeth." There was no armament
to protect these courageous sailors.
Here is one story of such a mission
right from the man who lived it. For
your historical value and reading
enjoyment!
Navy vocabulary " MM" means
motor machinist.
" Lay to" means Stand still in the
water.
PT 550
At approximately 3: 30 p. m. on
May 29, 1944, PT 550, Long Ellis
Boat Captain, Tom Dent XO PT 381
George Mort, Boat Captain and Bob
Taylor XO, Squadron 28, departed
on patrol from Green Island in the
Northern Solomon Islands to patrol
in the Bismark Sea between
Japanese occupied New Britain and
New Ireland in the vicinity of Rabaul,
a major Japanese base. The boats'
mission was to intercept Japanese
barges moving men and supplies
between New Ireland, and New
Britain and along the coasts of both
islands.
Shortly after midnight two or
more barges were detected off New
Ireland. The boats attacked the
barges with heavy gun fire from both
boats. During the attack " Jake," a
Japanese Zero with floats, based in
Rabaul, attacked the PT boats
dropping a " daisy cutter" ( antipersonnel
bomb) off the port quarter
of PT 550. Ellis and Rollins, Seamen
1C sustained serious injury, Ellis' left
elbow being partially destroyed and
Rollins' right thigh sustaining severe
flesh damage. Leslie, MM 2C and
Dent suffered lesser flesh wounds.
PT 550 radioed Green Island and
selected a rendezvous point
approximately half- way between
Green Island and the point of attack
for the Ready Boat to bring a doctor
and medical supplies to treat the
wounded on PT 550.
PT 550 arrived at the rendezvous
point first and lay to in a driving
rainstorm. About 50 minutes later
the Ready Boat, PT 546, Tom Gill,
Boat Captain, Bill Georgitis XO,
reached the rendezvous and with
pinpoint navigation smashed into
the starboard quarter of PT 550
totally disabling both boats.
Woodrow Perkins, M. D., Squadron
28 physician, administered to the
injured. In response to a radio
message for the disabled boats
three more boats were sent out to
the rendezvous point. One boat
returned the wounded men and the
Doctor to Green Island. Each of the
other two boats towed one of the
disabled boats back to Green Island,
arriving sometime in the late
afternoon.
Ellis and Rollins were flown to the
nearest hospital and were not
returned to combat duty. Leslie and
Dent were confined to and treated in
Sick Bay at Green Island. Both .
returned to duty on the PT 550 in a
relatively short time.

Bethpage Halloween Street Fair
Was One Great Event
On October 30th the Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce hosted its
second annual street fair. The
street fair was a wonderful way for
local businesses and organizations
to show off their wares while bringing
flair and excitement to our
downtown area.
Charlie Razenson of Unique
Impressions chaired this event.
The street fair was originally set for
Labor Day weekend. But after failing
to come to terms with the promoter
who was to host the fair for
the Chamber, the fair as planned
was canceled; It was later rescheduled
with the hopes that the
Chamber could acquire its own
venders. For weeks, Charlie went
to almost every street fair on Long
Island looking for venders and
dreaded when his wife joined him
because she always went home
with many purchases. { Although the
Chamber felt that Helen certainly
deserved every purchase since she
does all of the work anyway!) Eight
weeks of searching resulted in
confirmed commitments from over
100 outside venders and in fact
was completely sold out with the
overflow going into the side streets.
Advertising is key for such an
event and therefore signs were
made, information was sent to
Cablevision, the Tribune, various
web sites, and radio stations were
also notified. Within days of the
news hitting the public, the phones
began to ring and vendors began to
reserve spots. It was the hope that
the fair would showcase our own
Bethpage businesses and organizations
while also entertaining the
young and young at heart. With
good weather on the Chamber's
side, it is estimated that over
10,000 people walked the streets of
downtown Bethpage that day.
Money raised from this event will be
used to help fund future Chamber
events and projects such as our
upcoming holiday lighting ceremony.
On the morning of the fair, many
people came out to help prepare for
the event. Streets needed to be
closed, spots needed to be marked,
venders needed to be directed to
their spots, and the list goes on and
on.
The Bethpage Chamber of
Commerce wishes to thank the following
individuals because without
their help the event would not have
been as successful as it was.
Thanks are sent to Chamber members

Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir:
Recently I received a copy of The Tribune reporting on the Central
Boulevard's School's 50th celebration.
I am 91 years old and now live in GA. Mr. Pitts was the first principal of
C. B. S. and I was his secretary. I was the secretary for 20 years and those
years were crowded with so many good memories - too many to mention. A
secretary does many things like sewing a torn seam or lending lunch money
to a student and on and on.
I am proud of the life membership P. T. A. and other awards school related
that were given to me.
When you publish this letter please say a big hello to the people of
Bethpage and " Thanks for the Memory."
Very truly yours,
Marguerite ( Marge) Whitaker
Central Park Historical Society
December Meeting
Lois Lovisolo will reflect on the
lives, love, passions and writings of
Iris and Alonzo Gibbs. Lois will tell of
the loving life they shared which was
evident in the writings of Alonzo. Iris
researched and documented the
history of our area. She wrote for
the Long Island Forum and together
they wrote Harking Back and
Bethpage Bygones which traces the
history from the Bethpage Purchase
to the 20th century.
Join us as we celebrate the
beauty and wonder of the season.
After the presentation, by Lois
Lovisolo, we will have refreshments.
The refreshments will be special
treats provided by our members. If
you would like to share one of your
holiday specialties ( cookies, cake,
etc.) it would be appreciated. We
always enjoy this interlude, during
the holiday rush, as we take time to
just visit with a cup of coffee or tea
with friends.

BETHPAGE FIRE DEPARTMENT
COMMISSIONER ELECTIONS
DENNIS HOLZ CHARLES RAZENSON
To the Residents of the Bethpage Fire District,
For those of you that do not know me, please allow me an opportunity to
introduce myself. My name is Dennis Holz and I am seeking re- election to a
five year term as Fire Commissioner for the Bethpage Fire District. I have been
an active member of the Bethpage Fire Dept. for over 32 years.
During my tenure as Fire Commissioner, it has been my goal to maintain
fiscal responsibility for the taxpayers of this Fire District while providing the
Firefighters and E. M. S. Responders of the Bethpage Fire Dept. with the
means to do their job safely and effectively. I, along with the other members
of the Board of Fire Commissioners, have been able to achieve this goal.
I am proud to say that as a board member the Bethpage Fire District has
instituted many of the new innovations in the fire service that have been
beneficial to the residents, the Firefighters, and those who pass through
Bethpage each day. As an original co- signer, the Bethpage Fire District along
with the Levittown Fire District were the first L. I. Districts to institute an
automatic mutual aid agreement eliminating boundary lines to provide a faster
and surer response to the residents of both Bethpage and Levittown.
I am also proud of the fact that as a board we were able to save the
taxpayers in Bethpage over $ 300,000. When it came time to replace the Fire
District's Ladder truck, we chose a much less expensive option and provided
the Firefighters exactly what they asked for without compromising safety.
I have the knowledge and experience to do this job. I ask you for your
support and to allow me to continue to serve as your representative on The
Board of Fire Commissioners. I urge all registered voters in the Bethpage Fire
District to come and vote on Tuesday, December 13th from 6- 9 pm at
Bethpage Fire Headquarters, 225 Broadway.
Respectfully,
Dennis Holz, Fire Commissioner

From December l, 2005 to - December^!, 2005
Sv' jOvik,*- •*•> >
On Tuesday December 13, 2005, Bethpage residents will again be called
on to vote for Bethpage Fire District Commissioner. I Charles Razenson am
seeking election to this very important 5 year term position. It is the Board'
of Fire Commissioners who determines how your tax dollars are spent in the
goal of providing superior emergency services. It is the Board who determines
what new equipment needs to be purchased, if and when a new fire
station needs to be built, what seminars need to be taken to enhance skills
to better serve you the public, and what benefits should be given to its volunteers
to maintain morale and continued membership.
Never before has coming out to vote in a commissioners election been
more important. History shows that the majority of votes cast in commissioner
elections are by firefighters, and their family and friends. The public
on the whole does not participate and when taxpayers dollars are being
spent the public should come out and cast their vote.
Change is my platform for this election. I am a free thinker and speak
my mind. My actions are not based on popularity or personal gain but on
what is just and right. It is my business experience, fire fighting experience
and personal integrity that make me the right choice to become your new
Bethpage Fire Commissioner.
As for the specific qualifications which I bring to the table, they are the
following:
* Business owner for over 30 years, 10 of which have been in Bethpage ,
Unique Impressions otherwise known as " The Bethpage Store"
* Member of Bethpage Fire Department for 27 years
* Past member of Albertson Fire Department for 5 1/ 2 years
* Past President of the Nassau County Firefighters Assoc.
* Current member of South Shore, Nassau County and New York State Fire
Associations
* One of the founding members and current member of the Finance
Committee for the Nassau County Firefighter Museum and Education
Center
* Designed and implemented the Burn Center Collection Cash Box
Program which has raised thousands of dollars to help in the treatment of
burn victims in Nassau County
* Ex- Captain for the Fire Police Unit of the Bethpage Fire Department
* Former Company 7 Trustee of the Bethpage Fire Department
* Designed the uniform program for the Cradle of Aviation
* Represented Senator Tully at the New York State Small Business
Conference
* Fought City Hall and won by designing and getting adopted the Self
Service Law for the Town of North Hempstead
* Served 5 years on the Exxon Dealer Board for Gifts for Local Charities
Program
* A committee member and major sponsor of " Fight For Charity" whose
events provide funding for 7 local children's charities
* Instrumental in the development of the Bethpage Youth Center which I
helped run for 3 years
* Board Member of Bethpage Chamber of Commerce
* Helped set up and design the Bethpage Chamber website
* Bethpage Halloween Street Fair Chairperson.
* Membership in numerous professional business organizations on Long
Island
* Recently placed on the Board of " People", a community help group
* Elected Bethpage Businessman of the Year in 1999
We are fortunate in Bethpage. Our volunteer firefighters are dedicated,
trained professionals who care deeply about preserving life and property.
But, to ensure our continued superior fire and emergency protection we
need to eliminate the politics and concentrate on the management of our
resources. You, the public deserve somebody with a combined business
and charity based background who is not afraid to make a stand to get
things done, If elected, I give you my word, that I will strive to insure that
your tax dollars are spent wisely and for the right reasons .

Productive Day with the Kids Away
Bethpage Schools Conducts Professional
Development Workshops on
Superintendent's Conference Day
On November 8, 2005, while students
were enjoying a day off from
school, Bethpage School District
faculty members were in class participating
in a Superintendent's
Conference Day. The conference
day consisted of a series of work-shoos
designed by administration
to enhance teaching and learning
ana provide an in- depth review of
new state and federal requirements,
including standardized testing for
grades 3- 8.
The day began as all productive
days should; with breakfast, provided
by the Bethpage Congress of
Teachers. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Richard S. Marsh then
addressed the faculty.
" We developed a schedule of
workshops and activities designed
to support the outstanding work
that our teachers perform in the
classroom," said Dr. Marsh. " A
major benchmark of any profession
is that there is continuous enhancement
of knowledge and skills based
on research. Looking at the schedule
of workshops our team has
developed for our teachers, it is evident
that the Bethpage staff is comprised
of true educators seeking to
remain at the top of their profession."
Director of English Language
Arts ( ELA) Chryseis Corson,
Elementary Reading Teacher Leslie
Schreiber, and Central Boulevard
Elementary School Principal Steve
Furrey provided an overview of the
new grades 3- 8 ELA testing for elementary
faculty members. They
later reviewed sample ELA Exams.
Problem solving and mathematics
workshops were also conducted for
elementary staff.
Secondary level faculty members
( grades 6- 12) received an update
on District technology initiatives
from Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction and Technology
Terrence Clark as well as an
overview of the State Comptroller's
new auditing requirements from
Assistant Superinetdent for
Business Joseph Marchesiello.
Representatives from Nassau
BOCES also conducted a workshop
on working with English
Language Learners ( ELL). Various
departmental meetings, including
reviews of sample state exams and
Regents curriculum, followed these
workshops.
Additionally, reading teachers
participated in the ELA workshops.
Challenger, Special Education, ELL
teachers and other special area
teachers and aides participated in
these workshops as well. Music,
art, and physical education teachers
attended offsite conferences.
Library/ media specialists worked on
a collective grant- writing proposal
while psychologists and social
workers worked on procedure manuals.
Prior to the Superintendent's
Conference Day, Dr. Marsh outlined
the Superintendent and Board of
Education goals for the 2005- 06
school year. These goals are to:
• Continue to improve academic
results at all instructional levels.
• Launch additional initiatives to
identify and implement district- wide
measures to reduce expenditures
and increase revenues.
• Create opportunities to expand
school- business partnerships.
• Implement the district- wide
Capital Improvement Program while
facilitating the successful completion
of the Building Project.
• Evaluate and enhance the
District's Safety and Security
Program.
• Strengthen the District's Public
Relations Program to help ensure
all constituents are kept informed of
relevant news and information.
" Successful organizations,
whether in education, business, or
government, have clearly articulated
goals that serve as a guide for
overall achievement," added Dr.
Marsh. " Superintendent's
Conference Day 2005 has been a
productive day thanks to the commitment
and professionalism of our
entire faculty."
Students in the Central
Boulevard, Charles Campagne, and
Kramer Lane Elementary Schools,
in the Bethpage School District, celebrated
the Thanksgiving holiday
with a variety of educational, entertaining
and exciting events.
Collecting food for families in need,
studying the culture of Native
Americans and feasting with family
and friends were a few of the ways
students embraced and exhibited
the meaning of Thanksgiving.
Central Boulevard Elementary
School once again participated in a
community Thanksgiving food drive
this year. The donated food baskets
were collected by Mr. Quigley from
the Knights of Columbus/ Cathoiic
War Veterans of Bethpage. " This is
our ninth year participating in the
food drive. Each class makes a
thanksgiving basket which is a way
for the students io be directly
involved," commented Principal
Steven Furrey " The students decorate
their class basket which makes
it more meaningful for everyone.
Just one important reason we take
part in this event is for our kids to
know and feel they are capable of
making a difference when they
actively participate in this project."
All 26 turkeys and accompanying
baskets overflowing with food were
distributed to local families in need
this Thanksgiving.
Charles Campagne Elementary
School third grade students worked
on Native American projects that
would have been used at the time
of the first Thanksgiving feast. Many
students crafted place mats using
basket weaving techniques, clay
pots, and even totems to express
what they are grateful for this year.
They also created formal wear such
as festive headdresses, vests and
beaded necklaces. Classes studied
music, foods and housing common
to the Native Americans and
Pilgrims. Families and friends
joined students in working on craft
projects as a way to culminate their
social studies unit on Native
Americans and Thanksgiving.
Kramer Lane Elementary School
first grade students demonstrated
their thanks with an exceptional
presentation for family and friends.
They welcomed their guests first
with song and then, in accordance
with Thanksgiving tradition, food.
Class and additional volunteer
moms helped to prepare and serve
the home cooked feast. The children
dressed as Pilgrims, and
Native Americans in costumes they
had constructed themselves in
class.
Each school hosted a plethora of
activities with the purpose of teaching
students about sharing and
being thankful for all that they have
in their lives. Whether it was by
donating time or food, remembering
the country's humble beginnings or
simply serving up a song and
dance with a side of turkey, the
Bethpage Elementary School students
most definitely experienced a
feast of learning this Thanksgiving
holiday.
