Chamber of Commerce Lights Up Bethpage For The Holidays
Take a look up into the night
skies and you will see a festive
display of color along Broadway
and Stewart Avenue. These bright
and shiny lights come to you
courtesy of the Bethpage Chamber
of Commerce. The Chamber of
Commerce was delighted to have
been able to purchase new holiday
decorations for the town. Our new
lights were installed the weekend
after Thanksgiving and just this past
week the Chamber added some
twinkling snowflakes along Benkert
and Broadway as well. In addition
to the new lights the Chamber
strings evergreen roping along the
town as well as around our light
poles. This year the Chamber also
purchased a gorgeous manger
scene, which is being displayed in
the window of Totally Fit ( Thank
you all so much!) until a protective
case can be made for it to prevent
vandalism. These additions and all
of the lighting are quite an
expensive proposition, however the
Chamber believes that the town
should look festive and bright for
the holidays. This is turn will help
businesses during the season as well
as make all of the residents of
Bethpage proud of how their town
looks.
On December 11, 2005
Bethpage's Annual Lighting
Ceremony took place and attracted
a very impressive crowd as well as
representatives from all of our local
places of worship and community
organizations.
The evening began with the
melodious voices of the St. Paul's
Lutheran Junior Choir and included
comments by Town of Oyster Bay
Supervisor John Venditto,
Legislator Edward Mangano and
Councilwoman Mary McCaffrey. All
A crazy bunch of elves took center stage at this year's Chamber of Commerce Holiday Lighting
celebration. From the looks of these happy little guys and gals it seems they are '" Totally Fit!"
wished everyone a happy and
healthy holiday season as well as
congratulated the Chamber on
hosting this event every year.
Councilman Joe Muscarella and
Anthony Macagnione also greeted
the crowd and wished everyone a
wonderful holiday season.
Rabbi Seth Gordon, Pastor Sal
Bennardo, Father John Tizio and St.
Paul's Church Elder Steve Simon
all addressed the crowd and
reminded everyone as to the
significance of the entire community
coming together for this special
celebration, as well as wished
everyone a happy and joyous
holiday.
The lights on our stately and
impressive Menorah were lit and in
no time the countdown began and
Bethpage's gorgeous Christmas tree
was lit. The crowd broke into
thunderous applause and it truly felt
like the spirit of the season had
arrived in Bethpage.
Children in attendance were
amazed as Santa himself made his
grand entrance via the Bethpage
Fire Department and that jolly ol'
guy gave out candy canes and
greeted all the kiddies. Children
also were able to take a ride around
town in the Chamber's horse drawn
carriage ride.
The Chamber wishes to thank
everyone who volunteered his or her
time and effort in setting up and
coordinating this event. They also
want to thank all the members of the
clergy as well as local officials for
taking the time out to attend this
event. The Chamber of Commerce
takes great pride in this community
and also in the relationship that
local businesses share with
residents. It is that relationship that
makes Bethpage such a special and
wonderful place during the holidays
and most importantly all year long.

Senator Hannon: Protect Your
Family Against Home Invasion
With a rash of home invasion burglaries
throughout Long Island,
Senator Kemp Hannon ( R- 6th S. D.)
is offering suggestions that will help
protect your home and your family
from intruders.
Senator Hannon said, " One of the
more terrifying and potentially dangerous
crimes that can occur to a
family is the home invasion robbery.
Please take every precaution necessary
to safeguard your loved
ones."
Recommended precautions are
as follows: Hold a family meeting to
discuss home security plans;
Make sure all access areas such
as doors and windows having working
locks
( All doors leading outside should
have dead- bolts locks); Move and
secure items that can be used to
enter your home ( tables, ladders,
tools etc.);
Keep valuables in a safety
deposit box at the bank ( If not possible,
keep valuables locked in a
reasonable hiding place); Mark
valuable items for identification;
Keep security alarms activated
whenever possible; and Keep a
telephone near the bed.
When out of the house, leave
interior lights on or use a timer to
turn lights on and off. Also, leave a
radio or TV on to indicate someone
is home. At night: Close drapes,
blinds, window treatments; Keep all
entrances and garages well- lit; and
Leave outdoor lighting on.
Never open a door to strangers
without credentials; and Do not
leave a key over a door or under a
mat.
In addition, apartment dwellers
are advised: Never rely on a chain-latch
as a barrier to partially
open the door; and Never admit
anyone to the building who is
there to see another tenant or to
deliver something to another apartment.
Anyone asking admission to
do work for another tenant should
be referred to the building manager.
Furthermore, contact police if you
see someone in the building
who looks out of place or is acting-suspiciously.
If you are confronted by a burglar/
robber: Remain calm and comply
with instructions; Mentally
outline a detailed description
of the burglar/ robber; and At first
opportunity, call 911.
Senator Hannon said,
" Remember, criminals generally
look for opportunities that require
the least effort and offer low risk
and high gain. These tips will help
make your home a less desirable
target for home invasion."
For more information, visit
Senator Hannon's website at
www. kemphannon. com.

EDITOR'S NOTEBOOK

By Linda Mangano
Just the other day I was speaking to one of my closest friends on the
phone. We were both chit chatting about how we were dreading taking
down our Christmas trees from the attic. So many branches, so many
bags, so much work! Every year we try to make putting up our tree an
event. We put in the old Christmas CD, pour some eggnog and
decorate. This year it seemed like we all just couldn 7 get it together.
Every one of us had something to do or somewhere to be on almost
every night of the week. So we sort of pieced things together little by
little. I dragged down the tree and Ed put the lights up. We took the
ornaments out and vowed to put them on one night during the week
together. I am impatient, however, and that one night during the week
was not coming soon enough. For almost a week I stared at my naked
tree until one morning I couldn 7 take it. I dropped my children off at
school and when I opened my front door there it was-- naked and
calling out to me for help.
I thought I would actually be doing everyone a favor and so I put
on the Christmas music and set out to decorate the tree by myself ( I
skipped the egg nag, I was alone and it is much too fattening anyway!)
As I took each ornament out of the box, one by one, I began to realize
what this Christmas tree was all about. It wasn ' tjust any tree that we
traditionally decorate. It wasn ' tjust a chore. It was our story,
ornament by ornament unfolding right in front of my eyes. That's right
the story of our lives and our family being told with every ornament
hung on that tree. Our first Christmas together, Baby's First
Christmas, our vacations from all over and the mittens Ed's
grandmother knit. It was a pretzel wreath from Sal's kindergarten
class and a gingerbread man made when Alex was in preschool. I
rifled through Disney ornaments from just about every movie we
watched as my boys were growing up and found the special glass
ornaments from my mom ' s tree. I hung a Snoopy ornament given to me
by a special teacher and a heart ornament that Ed gave me when we
were dating. There were ornaments from grandparents, godparents,
aunts and uncles and even some from the White House. We had a # 7
brother, a World's Best Dad, a We Love You, Mom and an ornament
for one very overweight daschund. I even hung up two ornaments I
painted when I was a kid and as I held those ornaments in my hand, I
could almost smell my grandmother's meatballs cooking as I was
painting it on the table in the basement. Every ornament told a story
and I remember where each and every one ofthost ornaments came
from and most importantly what they all meant.
The chore of lugging down this huge tree with a hundred pieces
from the attic had now turned into a true stroll down memory lane.
You see, I realized that this tree represents so much more than just
glitter, lights and ribbons. This artificial tree, believe it or not has
grown. It has grown with my family and has grown to tell the story of
our lives as a family. It represents things that are cherished and
memories that are unforgettable. It represents the time that has gone
by and each ornament is a unique and special reminder of all of those
< N times. Many of these ornaments have jaded. Some are chipped and are
^ even missing pieces, yet the memories have not jaded a bit and the
TI sentiments of each ornament could never be broken. The job I dreaded
JO
E turned into a job I loved. After I finished decorating our tree I sat back
o for a while and just stared at it. I was amazed. You see, our tree may
^ not be able to rival the beauty and splendor of those in many
\ u department stores, but to me it is the most beautiful tree in the world.
§ It is not just any Christmas tree it is my family tree and it may not be
£ perfect but either are we.
LU That afternoon I picked up my kids from school and we drove home.
g I thought for sure that they wouldn 7 even notice that I had put the
11 ornaments on the tree. I opened the front door and before either of
LcUo them could put down their backpacks they began to groan. Believe it
or not they were angry that I didn 7 wait. They told me they love to put
the ornaments on the tree and that it is always such a fun thing to do.
UJ Boy was I happy. They were mad and I was glad because I knew that

Letters to the Editor
Dear Linda,
I find it very difficult to write to you about this problem that exists in our
town, but anyhow here it is. After living in Bethpage for the last thirty seven
years, each year I made it a point to try and bring some joy to our holiday
season by spending a couple of days decorating the outside of our home for
the delight of our neighbors, friends and visitors. Many of the decorations we
had since day one, and would not be able to replace them. It was sad to come
home last weekend to find that someone had trashed our beautiful
decorations; a giant Santa had been ripped apart, some decorations were
stolen and others were destroyed. I understand now that other homes in our
area experienced the same problem. I guess the time has come to just
decorate inside our home, and no longer outside. What a shame. This surely
has put a damper on the holidays.
Thank you Linda,
Merry Christmas, and a Blessed New Year
to you and your family,
Bill and Joyce Quigley
Dear Bill and Joyce,
I was so upset after reading your letter. It is unbelievable that anyone could take
pleasure in destroying someone else's property, especially at this time of year. I
can't imagine how heartbroken you must be to lose decorations that liave been part
of your tradition for so many years. The Chamber of Commerce had a similar
experience several years ago when our manger scene, which was displayed under
the Christmas tree in town, was stolen. The first year someone took Mary and Joseph
and last year the baby Jesus was destroyed. This year we purchased a gorgeous
manger but, are quite honestly, too afraid to display in the center of town until we
can construct some sort of showcase to protect it. Holiday decorations are such an
important part of the season and it is disheartening to think that many folks will
discontinue displaying their decorations for fear of having them stolen or destroyed.
I am a firm believer in not letting the vandals win so don't give up. My advice is to
contact the eighth precinct and report the vandalism that you and your neighbors
have experienced. Perhaps they can beef up security for a while to deter the vandals.
In the meantime try not to let this damper your holiday spirit. The true meaning of
the season is what lies inside your home anyway. Have a very Merry Christmas and
a happy and healthy 2006.
Thank you for taking the time to write in,
Linda
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE BETHPAGE FIRE DEPARTMENT
They say it's never too late to say " thank you," so even though it's been
over a year since the 1st time you were called to the aid of my husband, John
( Jack) McKeon, in July ' 04,1 would like to say it now and to let you know how
very much my family and myself appreciate the quick and personal attention
you gave to him then, because you see, you actually gave him 1 more year on
earth by seeing to it that he got the medical attention he needed at the time.
Very recently, on Nov. 11th you were called again to his aid by a wonderful
neighbor and even though God chose to take him even before you reached
him, the gratitude and compassion you showed toward both of us that day will
stay forever in my memory.
I want to thank you all so very much for all your efforts to save my husband
and for all the good you do for the people of Bethpage and vicinity.
We've lived here for 35 yrs. and I don't know what we would do without
your dedication.
Bless you!
Judy McKeon
o< they realized just how special this tree is and what it means to us as a
Dear Judy,
I am so sorry about your loss. It is never easy. I couldn't agree more with your
praise of the Bethpage Fire Department. If anyone has ever needed to call the BFD
in a rescue situation they certainly know how wonderful, dedicated and
compassionate they are. In a critical situation they are quick thinkers and when
every minute counts they respond professionally and respectfully.
I have said before that when a loved one passes away it is difficult to go on. Missing
someone so much is so hard. My solace has always been in truly believing that loved
ones are never ever gone and that the love we have for them lives on no matter what.
While your husband may not be with you in person, I believe he is always at your
side, loving you and protecting you. Please try to have a wonderful holiday and may
you enjoy health and happiness in 2006. Thank you for taking the time to write in.
Linda
family. That night instead of decorating the tree we all spent some time
together looking at each of the ornaments and laughing and talking
about what each one meant or what each one reminded us of I think
that I have already received the best Christmas gift I could ever ask
for. And while I have vowed to never decorate the tree alone again, I
am really glad that I did because I learned so much about what that
tree really means. I think my family already knew!

After dinner, the real fun began

On November 23, 2005 New
Island Hospital in conjunction with
Nassau County University Medical
Center and the Department of Health
provided 250 local residents with flu
and pneumonia immunizations.
Influenza, or flu, is an acute respiratory
infection caused by a variety
of influenza viruses. Viruses that
cause flu spread primarily from person
to person, especially by coughing
and sneezing ( via airborne
droplets of respiratory fluids). Flu
viruses can enter the body through
the mucous membranes of the eyes,
nose, or mouth. After a person has
been infected with the virus, symptoms
usually appear within 2 to 4
days. The infection is considered
contagious for another 3 to 4 days
after symptoms appear.
Flu is usually signaled by
headache, chills, and dry cough,
which is followed rapidly by body
aches and fever. Typically, the fever
starts declining on the second or
third day of the illness. It is then that
the upper respiratory symptoms
become noticeable — nasal congestion
and sore throat.
Pneumonia is a general term for a
lung infection that can make it difficult
for you to breathe. In most people
it is easily treated at home and
does not cause permanent lung
damage. However, in adults older
than 65, infants, and people who
have other diseases, especially lung
diseases such as chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease ( COPD), it can
be serious and may need to be treated
in the hospital. Bacterial pneumonia
is pneumonia caused by bacteria.
Streptococcus pneumoniae is
the most common cause of bacterial
pneumonia. You should get the
pneumococcal vaccine if you:
Are over age 65
Have a chronic illness, such as
Parkinson's disease, diabetes, heart
disease, or lung disease
Have HIV or AIDS
Have a weak immune system from
another cause, such as from certain
kidney diseases and some cancers,
or have had your spleen removed.
Are taking medicines, such as
prednisone that weaken the immune
system
Viral pneumonia is pneumonia
caused by a virus. About half of all
people with pneumonia have viral
pneumonia. Viral pneumonia is usually
less serious than bacterial
pneumonia and can take from 2 to 4
weeks to recover.

Girl Scouts Camp Out
S
The Girl Scouts of Plainedge Troops # 3459, # 3530 and
# 3543, recently spent a fun- filled weekend camping in
Hampton Bays. Upon arrival the Scouts wasted no time in
setting up their campsite. They quickly became pros at using
the wheelbarrows to haul their gear to the tent area. While they
unpacked, the leaders got the fires going to make hot
chocolate. It was cloudy and bitter cold, and that hot chocolate
hit the spot. Some of the Scouts made birdhouses from milk
cartons, while others " chilled" in their tents. After a delicious
lunch of hot soup and sandwiches, the Scouts began the
afternoon activities. These included a tour of the camp, a hike
to the beach, a scavenger hunt, games and crafts. Many of the
activities were organized and run by Cadette Troop # 3543. The
Scouts also completed various activities towards their Outdoor
Camping badge. Of course, no camping weekend would ever
be complete without s'mores and songs around the campfire.
The day- trippers headed back home after a terrific day, while
Troop # 3530 braved the extremely cold weather, and spent the
night. Never let it be said that Girl Scouts don't have a spirit of
adventure.

REAL
ESTATE
MATTERS
% Gina McGovern
y ^ ; w u | b?' S
" When is the best time of year to sell my home?" This is one of
those questions I hear all the time. A Smart Realtor, ( like me!) will
always say, " NOW!" and list your home! It's a common
misconception to think that homes are only sold during the Spring
and Summer. I guess that kind of thinking assumes realtors go into
hibernation when the cold weather comes.
While it is true that many homes are marketed and sold during
the warmer months, I work all year round. I would love to find a
warm quiet place to hide and sleep for the winter, ( did I mention I
have 3 children?) but I don't. I have sold homes over Thanksgiving
and on Super Bowl Sunday. We have had closings on both
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Many people would be
surprised to learn how many closings take place the last week of the
year. Like having a child at the end of December, ( done that!),
closing before the new year can have tax advantages.
Certainly, homes look lovely in Spring and Summer. The lawns
and landscaping are all attractive. That beautiful back yard and deck
show to advantage. The pools are open. The curb appeal is very
apparent. Many homes do sell during the warmer weather. There
are buyers who will only close in the summer so they can more easily
transition their children's schooling.
But there is something very warm and welcoming about entering
a warm home on a chilly day. That kind of cold weather cooking,
( stews, soups, and baking) adds an inviting aroma to your home as
buyers come in. For those sellers who decorate for the holidays,
that too, can make a house seem much more like a home. Buyers
might picture their own tree in that spot in the living room. I
remember that when we moved into our home, that was the topic of
debate among my brothers.
While the quantity of buyers decreases somewhat at this time of
year, the seriousness of them increases. For most buyers, house
hunting at any time of year can be stressful. ( Unless you have a
great agent, like me!) Trying to shop for a new home at the same
time you are trying to finish all that holiday shopping can be too
much for the casual house hunter.
This is why the buyers who are out there now are serious. They
are frequently people who have been shopping for a while. As an
agent, I have helped educate them to the local marketplace. These
are buyers who really need to buy a house. Sometimes they are
being transferred, or the landlord where they are renting is making a
change. There are engaged couples who would like to have the
house a few months before the wedding so they can do the work.
Just as there are so many reasons to sell, there are that many
motivations for buyers.
When is the best time to sell your home? Any time of year. In a
busy office like mine, we have those buyers all year round. So if you
are considering selling your home, don't feel you have to wait. Call,
because Real Estate is my profession, and I work all year!

Christmas 2005
The Grinch is back. No, not the Grinch created by Dr. Seuss, I am referring
to those Grinches who are out to ruin Christmas and the spirit of the holidays
for the rest of us.
Who are they?
Retailers and advertisers are always at the top of the list with their
unrelenting hype of anything from the latest " must have" toy to that luxury
item that promises to bring happiness and joy to the lucky recipient. ( We all
know better, don't we?) How about those midnight store openings right after
Thanksgiving? People trampling each other as they run for the bargains.
Next it's those Grinches who object to one or more of the
Christmas/ holiday traditions... extending a greeting that does not include the
words " Merry Christmas;" public displays of the creche or menorah; singing
Christmas carols in school; excluding the mention of the birth of Jesus as the
genesis of Christmas celebrations.
When it comes to advertisements, Citicorp tops my list. How do children
react when they see Vikings smashing a Christmas tree and shooting down
the reindeer. Last night, I saw Citicorp's second seasonal ad. In it, a crazed
looking Santa arrives in an office riding in a sleigh drawn by dogs. The dog-drawn
sleigh then knocks over the Christmas tree.
There is a better way-
Christmas 2005 - Bethpage Style
On Sunday, December 11, 2005, Bethpage had several Christmas
celebrations that were in keeping with the finest traditions of the season.
They were inclusive, bringing together people of different religions and
beliefs to celebrate family, faith and community. The day started with the
brave souls who slipped and slid on the Bethpage High School football field
in the annual Bretton's Deli Charity Football game. This year marked the
event's 18th anniversary. The money goes to the Bethpage Community
Foundation and is used to help needy families in Bethpage at Christmas and
throughout the year.
The Bethpage Fire Department held its. annual children's Christmas party.
A terrific event for the kids whose dads are called from family dinners, birthday
parties, and other events to honor their commitment as volunteers in the
Bethpage Fire Department.
At 6: 00 PM, residents gathered on Broadway to witness the lighting of the
menorah and Christmas tree and for the town's newest display - the creche
which is currently secured in the front window of the Health and Fitness
Center. Carols were sung; prayers offered; the event was a combination of
the religious and the secular and - to my knowledge - no one objected.
Even the Beth page- based Who Cares Motorcycle Club was on their
annual Christmas mission - distributing toys and gifts to needy families
throughout Nassau County.
And so, because I live in a community that respects all holiday
celebrations, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas - a Happy Hanukah - Peace
and Goodwill to All.

Central Blvd. Students Learn
1 About Veterans
The first graders at Central Boulevard School have been
learning; a lot about veterans. Each student was asked to bring
in red, white, and blue paper stars listing the people in their
families who have served in the armed forces of the United
States. Veterans were listed for the Army, Navy, Marines, Air
Force, Coast Guard, and National Guard. A Wall of Honor
displayed all the stars. We found that most of the veterans
served in the Army.
i l i i i i l l i i i l i i i
fiiiiiiiiisi
The children also did special projects to honor the veterans.
One class made special hats in honor of Veteran's Day. Some
children made American flags and yellow ribbons to display on
their homes. We learned about some soldiers who are serving
now and made extra yellow ribbons to show that we. are hoping
for their safe return.

Congratulations to the
Bethpage Congress of Teachers
The Bethpage faculty and staff from all five schools in the
district joined in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk
on Sunday, 16, 2005 at Jones Beach for the third consecutive
year. This year, the B. C. T. raised over $ 3,000.00 for this very
important cause. Congratulations to Central Blvd. for raising
the individual highest school total of $ 1,157. The two highest
money raisers this year were Anne DiPrima from J. F. K. and
Nanette Girolamo from Central Boulevard. Every donation
counts and is very much appreciated in this war against breast
cancer. Pictured here is the team of walkers as they met to
begin the 5 mile walk. A special thanks to Roseann Cordiner
who is the District Coordinator for the B. C. T. for this event.

The LI Regional Poison and Drug
Information Center at Winthrop
Offers Tips for a Safe and Healthy
Winter Season
Mineola, NY - The Long Island Regional Poison and Drug Information
Center at Winthrop- University Hospital offers the following tips to help
safeguard you and your family during the winter season when cold and flu
viruses are more common and fuel- burning appliances are used more often:
Medication Safety:
• Read labels carefully before giving or taking medications.
• Do not take medicine in front of children, because children like to
imitate adults.
• Do not take medicine that belongs to someone else, even if you have
the same symptoms.
• Lock all medicines, including vitamins, away from children.
• Use child- resistant lids and replace them tightly.
• Never call medicine " candy."
• Be aware that some cold/ flu medicines can increase blood pressure
and heart rate, and cause drowsiness.
• If you take medication for high blood pressure, consult your doctor
before taking any cold/ flu medication.
Carbon Monoxide Safety:
• Install at least one carbon monoxide detector near the sleeping
areas in your home.
• Make sure that all fuel burning appliances are in good working
condition and have proper outside venting.
• Make sure your chimney flue is not clogged.
• Never use gas range, gas oven, and gas or oil space heater to heat
your home.
• Never use charcoal grill indoors.
• Never leave an automobile engine running in an enclosed garage.
Please contact the Long Island Regional Poison and Drug Information Center
at ( 800) 222- 1222 or ( 516) 663- 2650 for poisoning emergencies and poison-related
information. For more poison prevention information, log onto

man in an average American small town was sitting in his living room on
c J l ' l s the evening of December 24. As he watched his wife and family put the
final touches on the tree and fill the bottom with gifts he reflected on the peace,
happiness and tranquility of the night. He went to his window and watched the
soft snow cover everything and make it look pure and peaceful as well.
He saw some homes decorated for Christmas and others with the Chanukah
Menorah displayed in the window. He then saw an odd sight, two soldiers in full
gear standing out in the cold. He went out and invited them into his home to
warm up and join in the evening meal his family had prepared.
They thanked him but refused the invitation because they were on duty. A little
confused he asked why. They said that like their Great Grandfathers who
defended our great nation in WWI, their Grandfathers who did the same in
WWII, Uncles in Korea and their Fathers in Viet Nam it was now their turn.
They explained that protecting the rights and freedoms of all Americans always
is a soldiers duty, wherever needed.
They then asked him a question. Why have we fought for freedom of tyranny
and religion in all these other places around the world and it is not, by some
peoples views, proper to wish our Christian friends a Merry Christmas and our
Jewish friends a Happy Chanukah? The man thought for a moment. Realizing
the truth to what they said he turned to reply but they were gone. This time to
Iraq and other areas in the Middle East to again protect us here at home. The
man then went to all the homes on his block and offered a " Politically Incorrect"
Merry Christmas or Happy Chanukah and asked each friend in their own way to
include our brave Soldiers around the world protecting us in their prayers.
