VOL 43 NO. 13 April 22- 28, 2005 FIFTY CENTS
We're All Crazy About Crazy for You
The Bethpage High School
Masquers Guild has done it again!
Thursday, Friday and Saturday April
7- 9 the 80 person cast of Crazy for
You blew away three packed
houses. The Guild definitely
stepped up to the challenge of
topping last year's perfect piece,
footloose, countless hours from
December through April were spent
at the High School Auditorium
learning songs and dances to dazzle
the audiences, but while all of that
was happening friendships were
forming. If you ask a member of the
Masquer's guild why they've stuck
out the hard days and long
rehearsals, they're sure to say the
friendships and memories that they
have formed.
You may be wondering what
goes into perfecting the show. Well,
ponder no longer! In December
auditions were held where each
member of the prospective cast
sang a part of the song of their
choice. After a few grueling days of
call- backs ( a period of time when the
Director, Mr. William Kroupa, Jr. calls
in students to read and sina for a
specific part) the cast list went up.
The week following this, the newly
formed cast began learning the
longest and most challenging
number in the show, I Got Rhythm.
The seven minute song with a four
minute tap dancing break was a
challenge for
director/ choreographer William
Kroupa, this year's dance captains
Lindsay Harvey and Antonia
Broughton. and of course the cast.
After hours of counting and
practicing, the dance was finally
perfected. During the course of the
following 4 and one half months the
rest of the show came together
beautifully. Lines were memorized
and dances learned. Some nights
ran late into the evening and some
Saturdays began very early, but they
were all worth it April 9th when all
doubts about the show ceased to
exist as the cast bowed to a long
standing ovation.
Without the dedication of the
stage crew there would be no show!
The strong hands of the crew
allowed scene changes to run fast
and smooth and left the cast
relieved knowing the set was in safe
hands. The crew members range
from 9th grade through 12th grade
and specialize in different aspects of
the show. The crew responsible for
the back stage area and scene
changes ran under this year's stage
crew manager Ashley Szoyka,
assistant stage manager Lauren
Picone and stage manager in
training Christina Riscica. the
Lighting crew also put in long hours
to ensure that every scene had the
correct mood; Technical Director,
Libby Thompson, held up this crew.
A critical part of a musical is of
course the music! Mr. Eric Kay, band
and orchestra teacher from Kramer
Lane, directed the pit, put together
by senior Lori Siesto. Bethpage's
School's music department
chairperson, Ms. Paula Farbman was
the musical director, teaching the
cast the words and notes to
accompany the toe- tapping music.
There is more to the Masquer's
Guild then the on- stage time, and a
lot of work that goes unnoticed. A
small group of students are
responsible for a large part of the
Guild's success. Each year there are
a four or five students who are given
the title officers. The come early and
stay late, keep the group united,
design the playbill, assist Mr. Kroupa
with whatever he needs, keep up
the morale of the group with quotes
and birthday announcements and
offer support to anyone who needs
someone to fall back in. This year
there are five officers; graduating
this year after two years as officers
are Stephen Dagnell, Will Wulff,
graduating after one year as an
officer is Lindsay Harvey and
returning for another year are Peter
Casey and Samantha Hirsch.
The students who are graduating
said their tearful good- byes to the
stage after four years and the
returning guild members are already
psyching themselves up for next
season. New officers, dance
captains and shows for next year
have not yet been announced. The
wonderful work of the Masquer's
Guild has left audiences unable to
believe that they had been sitting in
a high school auditorium. The cast,
crew and teachers involved in Crazy
For You devoted their time and
strength into the perfection of the
show and definitely have something
to celebrate now.

Budget Passed on Time for
First Time in 21 Years
Assemblyman Joseph Saladino
( R, C, l- Massapequa) today
announced the state Legislature
passed the state budget by its April
1 deadline for the first time in 21
years. He credits a new spirit of
bipartisan effort and cooperation for
the passage, but says there is still
more government reform that's
needed.
" I was elected last year by the
voters to bring reform to state
government and do everything in
my power to facilitate a budget that is
on time and fair to the taxpayers of
Long Island," said Saladino.
' Through bipartisan efforts and a
tremendous push from our
colleagues in the state Senate, we
have been extremely successful in
achieving this goal. I am proud to be
working in this new environment of
bipartisanship and reform, and I'm
thrilled to report that my efforts this
past year have contributed to the
success. However, in the true spirit
of reform, we must make this year
the rule and not the exception. It's
crucial that we have an on- time
budget every year, and I'm
committed to making this goal a
reality."
Saladino, elected in a special
election in February 2004, has
served as a catalyst for reform since
taking office. He said his highest
priorities include curbing the
dysfunctional legislative process
and working to deliver an on- time
state budget.
According to Saladino the
passed state budget includes an
increase in state school aid to each
of the school districts in the 12th
Assembly District.
' The reforms passed earlier this
year allowed us to work more
efficiently and gave the public more
opportunities to experience the
budget negotiation process, thanks
to the open budget discussions that
included all five legislative leaders,
instead of the usual three- men- in- a-room
process," said Saladino.
' Through the dedication,
cooperation and spirit of true reform
the Senate, Assembly and Gov. y
George Pataki were able to work
together to pass an on- time,
balanced state budget."
Saladino continued, " I thank our
Long Island senators, my Assembly
colleagues and Gov. Pataki for their
resolve to work cooperatively to
make our goals a reality. It has not
been easy to bring an on- time
budget while simultaneously
fighting for our fair share of state
funding.
" I look forward to continued good
will between both sides of the aisle
in the Assembly and serving in my
role to build bridges between the
political parties, as well as the various
levels of government. In this
manner, we will create more
efficiency, experience less political
fighting and give greater attention to
the highest priorities of our
residents, children and taxpayers."
Saladino said more reforms are
needed. He has introduced a plan of
statutory and constitutional
legislation that would establish
consequences for missing the less-publicized
steppingstone deadlines
leading to the April 1 requirement.
The measures include allowing the
state comptroller to intervene with a
binding revenue forecast if the
Legislature is unable to reach a
revenue consensus by March 10
each year; establishing budget
conference committees by March 15
each year; prohibiting the
Legislature from considering
nonbudget legislation after April 1
until a budget is adopted; and
banning legislative recesses until a
spending plan is approved, with the
exception of religious holidays.
Mejias Blasted for Failure to Act
on Gang Violence When it Counts
Tom Sabellico, Republican
Candidate for the 14th Legislative
District, responded to Legislator
David Mejias' forum on gang
violence this evening by pointing
out that Mejias failed to act " when it
counted," by refusing to support
initiatives to add 300 police offers to
our streets and the creation of a
dedicated anti- gang task force to
combat Nassau County's growing
gang violence problem. Gang
violence has become one of the
most important issues in a County
that was never known for such
unlawful activity. On March 19th,
three teenage boys were attacked
by a gang of youths in South
Farmingdale. The gang assault,
carried out by 4 teenagers resulted
in all three victims being admitted to
Nassau University Medical Center
with serious facial injuries and stab
wounds. ( See Police News Release
attached). " Legislator Mejias is
holding a forum to pacify the
community. This forum will not add
one police officer to the streets to
stop this scary cycle of vicious
attacks," said Sabellico. " I am in favor
of community meetings but not
when they are hypocritical or
politically motivated," added
Sabellico.
During Legislative hearings to
adopt the 2005 Nassau County
Budget, an amendment was
proposed by the Republican
Minority to direct the Police
Commissioner to create a 100
member dedicated anti- gang task
force to address gang related crimes
like the incident in South
Farmingdale. Despite the growing
concerns of citizens, Legislator
Mejias provided the tenth and final
" NO" vote to reject the proposal to
place more police officers on our
streets. " As a resident of this area for
40 years, and a strong believer in
families and children, I am insulted
that Legislator Mejias is holding ' feelgood
forums' on gang violence
when he rejected a plan to add more
police officers to our streets and
create a specialized unit to fight
these crimes. If Mejias did the right
thing for Farmingdale last October
we might not need to be here to talk
about this problem tonight. When
elected, I will ensure that the
undermanned Nassau County
Police Department has every
available resource to eliminate the
plague of gang violence from our
community and Nassau County,"
added Sabellico.

Honors and Regents Italian classes.
Students contribute to the event by
bringing in a homemade dish. Other
students help Art Teacher Mr.
DeStefano create the fascinating
murals that adorn the entire gym.
Two of the murals filled the entire
length of two walls, depicting smiling
students past and present -
photographic testimonials to the
success of the event over the past
years.
According to Signore Maio, the
idea for the Italian Feast was inspired
by a tradition that began in Italy and
continues to this day. " In Italy,
Father's Day, is a special day where
people cook lavish foods and invite
the homeless for a day of sharing,"
he said.
Eleventh grade student Sarah
Petroni, who brought in a delicious
Penne A La Vodka dish, said she
looks forward to the event because
it is tremendously fun. Senior Rod
Rizzo, who helped put up the murals
displayed throughout the gym,
stated, " Italian Feast is a great thing
and a way to preserve our heritage
and tradition."
Coordinated by Signore Maio, an Italian teacher for nearly 40
years at Bethpage High School, the Italian Feast, an annual
event enjoyed by students in the Italian classes was a day of
sharing traditional Italian foods. Pictured: Italian Teachers,
Jackie Rito and Signore Maio.
The 33rd annual Italian Feast,
held at Bethpage High School,
attracted hundreds of hungry
students and teachers who shared
homemade Italian goodies
throughout the day in mid- March. A
day of camaraderie and appreciation
for Italian foods and tradition, the
event was enjoyed by all who
attended.
The aroma of Italian foods filled
the small gym which was decorated
festively from floor to ceiling. Tables .
of Wattan foods, desserts and
pastries, most homemade by
students and their families, filled two
walls while hundreds of students,
teachers and community members
came to enjoy the bountiful feast. A
statuesque fountain spouting
flavorful fruit drinks added a bit of
Italian flavor.
The event, brainchild of Italian
Teacher Signore Maio, known
fondly to all his students as " Signore
Maio," has grown over the years
because of its popularity and
delectable food offerings.
According to Italian Teacher
Jackie Jill- Rito, the event,
coordinated annually by Signore
Maio, involves students enrolled in
Students ( both past and present) adorned the walls of the
gym at Bethpage High School during the 33rd annual Italian
Feast. Pictured in front of the photographic wall mural are three
ninth grade students, Charlie Marino, Vinny Bianco and
Thomas DeMartinis with Signore Maio, coordinator of the
event.
