May is Poppy
Month
The Butehom Brothers Veterans
of Foreign Wars Post 4987 of
Bethpage will be out with their
" pischka cans" with the first day of
May approaching till the last day of
May. This practice was started by the
Veterans of Foreign Wars many
many years ago. By doing so it has
provided necessary funds for their
organization and many other military
organizations that copied the
practice. The funds are necessary
for our VFW to allow us to put on the
programs, such as hospital visits,
parades, community projects such
as the Voice of Democracy an essay
writing contest for the children in all
the schools of our district. Many
other things are helped with these
donations.
Our people of the area always
have been exceptionally generous
when it comes to donating to our
Poppy campaign in the month of
May. We the VFW are hoping that
this year will be very successful once
again. The " old soldiers" will be out
there with the poppy's as usual
looking for those donations. Please
help them out once again!
Please note: Our Bethpage
VFW, with the deaths of members
are ten members short of 100%
membership. We always have made
our full percentage. Now we need

Bethpage High School
Makes Their Debut on
MTVs TRL
On a clear, sun- drenched day in
early spring, 92 seniors at Bethpage
High School set out to make their
mark on television. Donning t- shirts
that displayed the school's " Golden
Eagles" logo, the seniors, who
represent members of all the athletic
teams at the school, enthusiastically
boarded a coach bus and headed to
MTV studios in Manhattan.
Aired live on MTV's Total
Request Live ( TRL) program on
March 30th, students from the
" Golden Girls" Varsity Kickline and
Varsity Gymnastics Teams were in
the limelight as they performed
various stunts and dance routines
while their peers watched and
cheered for their teammates.
Coordinating the event were several
administrators, coaches and
student, Alex Woods, a member of
the Girls Varsity Gymnastics Team
whose aunt works at the MTV
studio. Coaches and administrators
at the High School accompanied the
seniors on the trip.
John Franchi, Director of Health,
Athletics, and Physical Education at
Bethpage said the highlight of the
MTV event was the live performance
by the Varsity Gymnastics and
Varsity Kickline teams. " It was a great
day - the kids got to see how a live
show is put together," said Mr.
Franchi. " The gymnastics team
performed as a kick- off to the show
and the Kickline closed it. It was a
thrill for everyone."
According to Assistant Coach of
the Varsity Gymnastics Team,
Debbie Ruts, one of several
coaches who escorted the students
to the MTV studio, the kids worked
diligently throughout the year and
looked forward to the event. " I'm
very excited for them. They worked
very hard all year and had many
accomplishments," said Ms. Ruts.
' The Varsity Gymnastics Team took
first place in the county this year - it's
their seventh county title in a row."
During the live TRL show, three
members of the Girls Varsity
Gymnastics Team, Alex Woods,
Christina Spiers and Brittany Hervey
showed their skills and agility by
performing cart wheels, a
combination of back hand springs
and round off back hand springs,
and various tumbling stunts. Alex,
an award- winning gymnast who has
been taking gymnastics since she
was five years old said she
performed a difficult stunt, the round
off back hand spring back layout,
which is a back hand spring without
using the hands. " We got there at
2: 30 and the show started at 5 - we
used the time in between to
practice," said Alex. " The whole
experience was a lot of fun, and I
especially loved performing."

RAIN
Most people, I believe, would have to
admit
Of rain, they are not a true fan
Those simple little falling drops
Have ruined many a well thought out
plan.
And while some may look to the wet sky
With disgust and utter despair
Rain has some wonderful qualities
Qualities important enough to share
Rain provides the nourishing drops
That makes our flowers' bloom
It provides that calming rhythmic sound
That some may perceive as gloom
It sets the stage and the mood
For snuggling under a warm blanket
And while it means staying indoors
There really is no need to get upset
Rain creates the perfect setting
To settle in with an intriguing book
To rent some old scary movies
Or if you must balance your checkbook
Rain makes the world look richer
As it's drops intensify the colors we see
Take a minute to discover the beauty
Of a rained on, majestic oak tree
And there is nothing more electrifying
Than lightening igniting the sky
And after a rainstorm is over
Sometimes a rainbow magically drops
on by
And while the skies may seem a bit
dreary
And we cherish our dear friend the sun
There are many ways to enjoy the rain
Ways that can actually be quite fun
So the next time dear old Mother Nature
Sends some raindrops your way
Turn your frown upside down
And you ' 11 look at rain in a whole new
way.
Enjoy each and every drop that falls
Take advantage of what the rain does
bring
Before you know it the sun will arrive
And that, dear friend, is the magic of
Spring!

Adding Color
To Your Garden
Spring is a spectacular time in the
garden. Bulbs are bursting through
the ground, early perennials are
starting to show flowers, spring-blooming
shrubs are adding their
array of colors and trees are
budding. In many gardens, this
show of color is followed by a
letdown in summer and fall.
If your garden falls into this
category, join Lynn Tompson, " The
Garden Lady" at the Library on
Wednesday, May 4 at 7: 30 P. M. and
find out how you can keep your
garden colorful right through the fall
season. This slide presentation
focuses on plants that can add
interest to your garden for more than
just spring. The emphasis will be on
plants suitable for the typical home
garden or border area. Admission is
free and everyone is welcome to
attend.

Avenue, three blocks west of Exit
# 8 on the Seaford- Oyster Bay
Expressway ( Route # 135), phone

Bethpage High School Salutes
Their 33 A. P. Scholars
W$ M
Thirty- three students at
Bethpage High School have earned
the designation of AP Scholar by
the College Board in recognition of
their exceptional achievement on
the college- level Advanced
Placement Program ( AP) Exams.
The College Board's Advanced
Placement Program offers students
the opportunity to take challenging
college- level courses while still in
high school, and to receive college
credit, advanced placement, or both
for successful performance on the
AP Exams. About 17 percent of the
more than one million high school
students in almost 15,000
secondary schools worldwide who
took AP Exams performed at a
sufficiently high level to merit the
recognition of AP Scholar.
Students took AP Exams in May
2004 after completing challenging
college- level courses at their high
schools. The College Board
recognizes several levels of
achievement based on student's
performance on AP Exams.
At Bethpage High School eleven
students qualified for the AP
Scholar with Distinction Award by
earning an average grade of at least
3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and
grades of 3 or higher on five or more
of these exams. These students are
Kevin Canzonieri, Wendell Cheung,
David Kleinstein, Tina Madan,
Jeanette Milevoj, Anthony Mole,
Kristen Schreiner, Rahul Shah,
Brendan Spears, Lauren Vetrano,
and Laura Watson.
None students qualified for the
AP Scholar with Honor Award by
earning an average grade of at least
3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and
grades of 3 or higher on four or more
of these exams. These students are
Antonia Cafaro, Alexandra Dolan-
Mescal, Vito D'Orazio, Amanda
Kalamar, Jonathan Ong, Brian
Sackett, Matthew Stephan, Jon
VanAlst, and Yanwai Wong.
Thirteen students qualified for
the AP Scholar Award by completing
three or more AP Examinations, with
grades of 3 or higher. The AP
Scholars are Patrick Bickard, Joseph
Cichon, Stanley Daniel, Kathleen
Granados, Ryan Kuhlman, Mukul
Pahuja, Michael Pastrich, Ian
Peikon, Joseph Secchio, Lori
Siesto, Philip Tjimos, Jacqueline
Travers, and Melissa Wierzbowski.
Most of the nation's colleges and
universities award credit, advanced
placement, or both based on
successful performance on the AP
Exams. More than 1,400 institutions
award a full- year's credit ( sophomore
standing) to students presenting a
sufficient number of qualifying
grades. Thirty- four AP Exams are
offered in a wide variety of subject
areas, each consisting of multiple-choice
and free response ( essay or
problem- solving) questions ( except
for the Studio Art exam which
evaluates students' original artwork).
Bethpage High School has an
exceptional AP program, which
offers twelve AP courses. An
increased emphasis has been
placed on adding additional AP
courses as well as encouraging
greater numbers of our students to
participate. Studies show that
students who have a more rigorous
course of study in high school are
more likely to be successful in
college. For the 2005- 2006 school
year, Bethpage High School will
introduce AP Environmental
Science for those students
interested in earth, life and physical
sciences. We at Bethpage High
School are extremely proud of all of
our students who once again
performed tremendously on their
AP Exams.

Will Bethpage Water Win
Best Tasting Water?
Will the Bethpage Water District
earn the coveted title of Best
Tasting Tap Water in Nassau County
once again? You'll find out when the
17th Annual Best Tasting Water
Contest gets underway at Simon's
The Mall at the Source in Westbury.
The popular event is sponsored
each year by the Long Island Water
Conference in honor of National
Drinking Water Week. Bethpage
water has taken the country title five
times.
The tap water taste competition
runs at the mall from Sunday, May 1
through Thursday, May 5 between
the hours of 10am and 4pm.
Shoppers will be invited to
participate in a blind taste test to
determine which Nassau County tap
water is most delicious.
Additionally, an informational
display will teach visitors about
where their drinking water comes
from and how it is tested frequently
for quality assurance. Valuable tips
for conserving water both in the
home and outdoors will also be
available. And, water experts will be
on hand throughout the event to
answer consumer's questions and
concerns.
Always beginning the first
Sunday in May, National Drinking
Water Week was started to raise
awareness of the quality and
quantity of local tap water supplies.
' Too often, most people don't
give a second thought as to where it
comes from or how fortunate they
are to have a continuous flowing
supply 24/ 7," stated LIWC chairman
Robert Murray. " Visit us at the mall,
participate in our taste contest and
learn more about one of life's most
precious natural resources and why
Long Island's tap water is among the
best in the Nation." ,

National Day of Prayer
May 5, 2005
May 5, 2005, being the first
Thursday in May, has been
designated this year's National Day
of Prayer; a day set aside by law for
Americans to come together, pause
from their daily activities and pray for
their nation, its leaders ( both local
and national) and for peace and
Harmony. This is of particular
importance in these times when
there is so much unrest, and when
the United States has troops
exposed to danger in various parts
of the world, and in light of the
September 11th attacks on our
nation. Only by humbly turning to
God in prayer can we hope for His
intervention on our behalf.
The first day of prayer was called
by the Continental Congress in
1775. In 1952, Congress passed a
joint resolution ( signed by President
Harry S. Truman) establishing an
annual day of prayer. The law was
amended in 1988 and signed by
President Ronald Reagan,
permanently setting the day was the
first Thursday in May - this year May
5th.
Prayer is part of our national
heritage, was taught by our Lord and
encouraged by this country's
founders. Not only should we use
the National Day of Prayer to bring
our petitions and praises to God,
but, every day should be a day of
prayer for each and every one of us.
Talk to the Lord today and every
day.

Private First Class Christian
Sanchez, a 20- year old native
of Bethpage recently
graduated Marine Corps
Recruit Training at Parris
Island, S. C. During the 13-
week training, at MCRD PI he
learned the basic skills,
training and discipline
required to become a Marine.
After returning home on
leave, the 2003 Island Trees
High School graduate, will be
attending his job specialty
school to become a combat
support specialist. Once
assigned to their first duty
station he will be furthering
college education with 100
percent tuition assistance.
Nassau County resident Michael
Romano got so many requests for
his marinade recipe over the twenty
years that he has been using it, that
he finally decided to bottle it for sale.
" Friends and family always
comment on how delicious my
steaks taste off the grill," said Mr.
Romano, a resident of Bethpage.
" We even dare to call it the best on
the planet."
Mr. Romano explains that his
Mikey's New York Steak Marinade is
made with specially selected
ingredients that are naturally aged
and then brewed. His blend of
unique spices, he says, enhances
the natural flavors of meats rather
than masking them.
Not only is the recipe still a family
secret, but Mike's Marinade is truly a
family project. Mr. Romano's wife
Clare, sons Matthew and Michael,
and daughters Kimberly and Tara, all
have a hand in the project, from label
development to packaging and
shipping. " Sharing the enjoyment
with people who enjoy the full flavor
of life makes it worth all the effort,"
says Mr. Romano.
Mr. Romano credits his taste for
flavor to his upbringing in Hicksville
in an Italo- American family. A
certified sommelier, he is a perennial
student of fine wines and travels the
world searching for flavor. According
to Mr. Romano, the key to the
appetizing flavor of Mikey's
Marinade, made from a naturally
brewed and fermented soy base, is
the Umami factor.
" While taste physiologists have
traditionally pointed to four basic
flavors - sweet, salty, sour and
bitter," he says, " Japanese culture
has long held the notion of a fifth
flavor, umami. Today, umami is
rapidly gaining acceptance in
Western culture, thanks in no small
part to the increasing popularity of
Asian cuisine.
Often translated as " savory" or
" brothy," umami can be described as
the tongue- coating, meaty flavor of
sauteed mushrooms, a juicy steak,
aged cheese, or a rich stock. The
umami taste is especially present in
protein- rich foods.
" Mikey's New York Steak
Marinade is a complex flavor
enhancer," advises Mr. Romano.
" There is nothing ordinary about
Mikey's, a true gourmet treat for
those who love flavor!"
" It was hard to tell if you were at St. John Baptist de LaSalle
Regional School in Farmingdale or at a theater on Broadway.
The Drama Club, moderated by Mrs. Montefusco and Ms. Mais,
put on a rousing production. In this " Salute to Broadway," third
through eighth grade students had the audience singing,
swaying, and clapping to their renditions of Hard Knock Life,
Wouldn't It Be Loverly, Dancing Queen, Uptown Girl, You've
Got to Have Heart, and We Go Together."

Prohibit Tattoos for Minors
With warmer days and summer

help! If you have a father or
grandfather that was a veteran in any
war please ask them to join our ranks
as we only have to Memorial Day to
make our quota and being we have
always made our quota it will be a sad
situation for us not to make our
quota this year. There are many
veterans out there that have not
joined for one reason or another.
Tell them to forget the reasons and
just call the Commander at 935-
8997 and say " I want to join! Our
Post understands that some of us
" old soldiers" because of health
reasons or other reasons cannot
attend meetings. We have members
that can't drive anymore or have
other medical problems that will
keep them from attending our
meetings. Don't let this stop them
from joining. Please get them to add
their names to our membership.
