VOL. 43 NO. 15 May 7- 14, 2005 FIFTY CENTS
Over 300 Seniors Attend
Bethpage Senior Citizen Prom
Sponsored by Student Council
Seniors put on their best dancing shoes as they danced to
popular music and sentimental tunes of the past at the
Bethpage High School Senior Citizen Prom, held in April.
The 15th Annual Bethpage
Senior Citizen Prom, held on
Sunday, - April 17 was a gala fun- filled
event, attracting more than 300
senior citizens of the Bethpage
community. Seniors shared a festive
evening that included hors
d'oeuvres and dinner, dancing to
the tunes of a lively D. J. and plenty
of camaraderie.
As people filled the gym, which
was transformed into a Las Vegas
theme, they were entertained by
soft music provided by the High
School Jazz Band. Student
volunteer greeters ensured guests
were seated and dozens of Student
Council members served up
scrumptious foods, cooked by
students and Chef for the evening,
Ed Long.
Coordinators of event, Wendy
Way and Jessica Bernie, both
teachers at the High School, along
with Student Council, plan
everything from the fund raising and
cooking the food and desserts, the
menu for the evening, to organizing
both the jazz band and D. J. Aramark
Food Services provided the coffee.
Ms. Way, who is a social studies
teacher at the High School, has
organized the festive event for the
past 10 years. Seniors pay $ 3.00 a
ticket for the Prom and share in a
social evening that has been
growing in popularity from year to
year.
" The first year we did this, we had
about 75 seniors. It grows bigger
each year - now we have about 300
seniors," said Ms. Way. " Student
Council does a great job raising
funds for the food, refreshments
and D. J."
First time Senior Prom
attendees, Elly and Stan Gold, both
residents of the Apollo Senior
Citizen Community Center in
Bethpage brought two tables of
their friends with them. Mrs. Gold
said they learned about the Prom
from a flyer they received at the
Apollo.
" I think this is a wonderful idea - it
makes you feel young again," said
Mrs. Gold. " And the kids are doing a
great job."
A resident of Bethpage since
1954, Mary Cohan, who raised four
sons who graduated from Bethpage
High School explained that this was
her first Prom. " I never went to my
High School senior prom," said Mrs.
Cohan. " All the fellas were in the
Army and I was engaged to be
married. My future husband was in
the Navy."
Marie Giovenco, a long- time
Bethpage resident, married the last
55 years said she attended the*
Senior Prom last year and had such
a good time that she had to come
back. " I love this, it feels wonderful.
And I love to dance," said Mrs.
Giovenco.
Maryann Pira, who has been
going to the Senior Prom since
2002, agreed with her friend, Marie
Giovenco, who was seated at the
same table. " I keep bringing more
people. I love it because I'm a kid at
heart," she said.
Bethpage Fire District
Advises Residents of
Upcoming Special Vote
The Board of Fire Commissioners
of the Bethpage Fire District is taking
this opportunity to advise the
residents of the Fire District that a
special election will be held on May
12, 2005, between the hours of
6: 00 P. M. and 9: 00 P. M., at the
Firehouse located at 225 Broadway,
Bethpage, New York.
The special election will provide
the voters the opportunity to vote
on two ( 2) propositions adopted by,
the Board of Fire Commissioners on
March 23, 2005.
The first proposition seeks
approval to amend the Fire District's
existing service awards program.
This program provides service award
benefits to volunteer firefighters
based on their years of active
service with the Fire Department. A
recent federal ruling has
necessitated a change in the
manner in which the benefits must
be paid. The purpose of the
proposition is to bring the program
into compliance with federal law
prospectively. The increase in cost
to make the program compliant with
the federal ruling and avoid possible
litigation is minimal.
The second proposition is
seeking authorization to sell real
property owned by the Fire District
that is no longer needed for Fire
District purposes. The sale of this
real property will provide additional
revenue to the Fire District and help
stabilize Fire District taxes.
All registered voters of the
Bethpage Fire District are invited to
cast their vote at the special
election.
. The following is the text of each
proposition that registered voters
will be called upon to vote on:
PROPOSITION 1
Shall the Resolution of the
Bethpage Fire District in the Towns
of Oyster Bay and Hempstead,
County of Nassau, State of New
York, entitled:
RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD

THE BETHPAGE FIRE DISTRICT IN

Bethpage
Restoration Village
Long Island's major outdoor living
history museum, Old Bethpage
Village Restoration, welcomes a
traditional rite of spring: the arrival of
newborn lambs, Nassau County
Executive Thomas R. Suozzi has
announced.
The sheep at Old Bethpage
Village are bred to resemble the
Southdown sheep typical to rural
Long Island in 1850. Modern
Southdown sheep are crossed with
black- faced Suffolk sheep to
produce offspring which look very
much like a 19th century Long Island
farmer's flock of sheep. The village's
ewes have been " lambing" over the
last several weeks, allowing visitors
the opportunity to truly witness the
rebirth of spring on Old Bethpage's
Powell Farm. So far this spring, the
Village has welcomed 14 lambs!
Old Bethpage Village
Restoration is operated by the
Nassau County Department of
Parks, Recreation and Museums. It
is located on Round Swamp Road in
Old Bethpage, one mile south of the
Long Island Expressway, Exit 48.
Days and hours of operation are
Wednesday through Friday, 10 a. m.
to 4 p. m., and Saturday and Sunday,
10 a. m. to 5 p. m. The Village is
closed on Mondays and Tuesdays,
except certain holidays.
Admission is $ 7 for adults, $ 5 for
resident senior citizens, children
ages 4 to 14, persons with
disabilities, volunteer firefighters,
volunteer ambulance corps
members, auxiliary, police and
veterans. There is no charge for
children under four years of age.
Parking is free. For further
information, call 516- 572- 8400.

By Linda Manga no
Willi the 3( f anniversary of the Vietnam War, it seems that many
Americans hare spent some time reflecting on a period in our country
that was quite difficult and turbulent, especially for those brave men
and women who sewed as well as their families. It was a controversial
war. as most are, yet the Vietnam War stands out in many of our minds
as the War that sparked the most violent of controversies. Many
Veterans of Vietnam returned home feeling ashamed and disrespected,
many returned home scared mentally and physically. Many tragically
never returned at all.
At a time of remembering the anniversary of this war and ironically
in sync with her new book. " My Life So Far", Jane Fonda has
returned to the public eye and is once again the topic of fiery debate. It
seems that Fonda has been selected to receive the distinction as one of
the " 100 Women of the Century" a distinction that has infuriated
some. You see Fonda's infamous visit to North Vietnam in 1972, is a
visit that earned her the title of ' traitor' by many Americans, both
those in the military and civilians at home. On this historic trip Fonda
praised The North Vietnamese, posed for a photo at a communist antiaircraft
gun emplacement and is said to have made several broadcasts
for rhe North Vietnamese in which she is clearly in support of the
enemy. Stories have also appeared on the Internet, which describe
alleged actions, which led to the beatings of several POW's. And while
these stories accuracy have been questioned one thing not
questionable is her 1972 trip, which in fact has been documented in a
photograph that has been etched into the minds of many Americans.
While I can understand those Americans who were in fact opposed
to the Vietnam War, or any war for that matter, protesting and voicing
their opinions at home, I simply cannot condone the actions of Ms.
Fonda. At a time when her career was at its peek she chose to take a
trip to North Vietnam and take a stand against her own country. An
opinion, I might add she is entitled to. ye: a trip and actions that to me
seem nothing but disrespectful ana ignorant VVrdie she claims to have
made thai trip to kelp put ar. en:, io the hilling ana the war. her actions
instead provoked diszus: ana anger ai new iaci: of judgment. Fonda
claims to have mack several apology anempis bin most Veterans feel
as though those caempu awe simply no: enough. And while 1 can only
spear, lor mvsed a seem: io me tnai Jane Fonda needs w let her
actions novi spear ioucier man her words and actions in J972. No one
can say thai she it. no: entitled io voice ner opinions or protest things
thai shefeeh are unjust ana not right. Yel : t seems to me that at a time
when we should be standing, behind our \ elerans. at a tune when even
if we disagree with the cause we should honor and salute those in the
midst of the war, she chose to use her fame as platform which cast an
ugly light on her Americanism as well as her disregard for those brave
enough to be fighting in Vietnam. And while I have said this before, I
will say again that no one likes war. No one likes to see families
separated, no one likes the idea of soldiers fighting in harms way and
no one likes the loss of life. Yet as Americans, I do believe that we
need to support our soldiers and give our Veterans the respect and
honor they deser\> e. Their sacrifice and dedication is what affords all
of us the privilege of being free and being able to voice our opinions in
the first place. Spitting in their faces will only result in getting spit on
in the future and I am sure even Jane would agree with that.

Remembering Vietnam
id- "' M
Councilwoman Mary McCaffery, Paul Masi of Bethpage and
the members of Chapter 82, Vietnam Veterans of America at
the opening ceremonies of the " Vietnam Wall Experience" at
the Marjorie Post Park.
April 30, 2005 marked the 30th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War.
As a tribute to the men and women who fought and died in that conflict, the
Town of Oyster Bay brought a replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall of Honor
to the Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. It was a stirring site... the granite wall
- flowers and personal mementoes left at the base of a panel where a loved
one's name is listed. American and military flags flew above the wall - memorial
wreaths from each branch of the service and other government offices.
Despite the rain, a steady stream of visitors to the site walked respectfully
from the beginning to the end of the wall, stopping to run their hand over the
name of a loved one or friend.
By contrast, the front page of the New York Times featured a photo of
Vietnamese parading on bicycles with colorful balloons flying overhead.
Televised newscasts also featured parades and fireworks displays, a four ton
cake for the 1,000 people who celebrated their 30th birthday on April 30,
2005, and soldiers re- enacting the " fall of Saigon," now Ho Chi Minh City.
Somehow, the dichotomy in the way the anniversary was marked here and
in Vietnam speaks to the conflicting opinions that the Vietnam War evoked
back in the 1960s and 70s and even today. In Vietnam, they celebrated - in
Massapequa and throughout the United States, we mourned.
The Vietnam Veterans returned to a country torn by conflict. Still when
called to serve, they left family, friends and their homes to fight in a war that
was contentious at best.
The heroes of Vietnam are the men and women who served when called
... whose patriotism in defense of freedom overruled the critics' opinion of the
war. The veterans of the Vietnam War returned to a very different America.
There were no parades to welcome them back. Those who could, retreated
into the mainstream of America, picking up the pieces of the life they had left
behind. Some of the returning veterans were scorned and even vilified; a few
were ioo scarred or broken to ever resume a normal life.
Is the Wall of Honor too little, too late to acknowledge the heroism of the
men and women who fought in the Vietnam War?
Never. r

Another War Story
By Past Cmdr Butehorn
Post VFW, Bud Rosch
" Iron Bottom Bay" they
nicknamed Leyte Bay! Why it was
just that?
At Pearl Harbor our Navy suffered
severe losses without having a
chance to fight in the sneak attack.
On October 25, 1944 the Japanese
intended to strike from the west in a
two task force attack. They went
around the islands of Leyte and
Samar in the Gulf of Leyte where our
ships and troops were invading.
Fortunately we had our Navy
there and immediately they poured
out a smoke screen to hide our
forces. Out of the smoke came our
destroyers and lodged a torpedo
attack on their battleships and
cruisers. They fired all the five inch
shells while the torpedo attack was
going on. They, our Navy, were
being hurt badly by the large shell
hits from the Japanese task force.
The men on those destroyers
looked death in the face every
minute of the fight. Can you imagine
what this kind of fire power would
have done to our troops attacking
the island?
The Japanese had to break off
and make a run for it. One reason for
this was that they thought our big
ships were nearby and that was a
mistake. Our big guns on the big
ships were in the area but not yet
that close. Fortunately the Japanese
were worried that they would be
there momentarily and broke off.
" When- all was done ^ nd the
smoke cleared three Japanese
battleships were sunk, six heavy
cruisers, three light cruisers, eight
destroyers sat at the bottom of
Leyte Bay. Our losses were one
light cruiser, two escort carriers, two
destroyers and one destroyer
escort. Our Navy in the face of
certain death held off the Japs and
submitted such losses the
Japanese had to turn around and
break off the engagement.
This battle was the largest Naval
battle of all time. A total of two
hundred and eighty two ships were
engaged.
SPRING
The first gallant bulbs of Spring
appear,
discombobulated by snow and
ice severe.
Brave irises bloom in a riot of
gold,
in defiance of wind and cold.
Warming sun dissipates the
intrusive snow,
it's natures signal it's time to
grow.
Splotches of yellow are scattered
around,
on the barren earth they can be
found.
Limpid thoughts about racing
effortlessly thru my mind,
winter's end no longer a puzzle
apple blossoms a sure sign.
I inserted a blossom in my pocket
to remind me of the day,
when winter's last gasp ended
warm weather is here to stay.
Vincent Ventura
When our Navy dive bombers
sunk four Japanese carriers at
Midway Island that was a
tremendous victory, however this
Leyte Bay engagement will in all
probability will always rank as the
most outstanding Naval battle. Not
only did our Navy protect the troops
from sure disaster, but achieved a
blow to the Japanese Navy that put
their Navy just about out of the war.
The losses of the Japanese Navy on
that Leyte Bay in all probability was
hard to digest in Tokyo. All their
major hardware laid at the bottom of
Leyte Bay.
With these tremendous losses
the Japanese were forced to pull out
of Alaska which was a great threat to
us cause it was possible to bomb
areas in the United States from
there. The destroyer John C. Butler
( DE 339) fired every five inch shell it
had aboard and came away with very
little damage. The destroyer DE 413
USS Samuel B. Roberts was not that
lucky. It went down hit by big shells.
The DE 405 the USS Dennis and
USS Raymond DE 341 were badly
hit but survived. The USS Hoel a DD
sank at 8: 55 a. m. The fight started at
7 a. m. Another DD sank at 10: 10
a. m. that was the USS USS
Johnston. The escort carrier USS
Gambier Bay sank at 9: 04. The USS
Heerman also a DD survived but was
barely afloat a complete wreck. The
first kamikaze attack was on the USS
St. Lo an escort carrier and sunk
immediately. This ended the fight oft
• Qimar Island at 10: 50 so the fight
; ted about four hours in close
quarters. About one hundred miles
away was another encounter when
the Japs came around Leyte in to
view of Admiral Olendorfs force and
he was able to fire all his task forces
guns while the Japs were in a
position to only be able to fire their
" Bow" guns. This is where he got his
part of revenge for Pearl Harbor as
his battleships opened up and did
major damage. Yes, Leyte Bay is.
really " Iron Clad."

Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
( Never known to fail)
Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful
vine, splendor of heaven, blessed mother of
the Son of God, immaculate virgin, assist me in
my necessity. Oh star of the sea, help me & show
me herein, you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary,
Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I
humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart
to succor me in this necessity. There are none
who can withstand your power. Oh show me
herein you are my mother. Oh Maty conceived
without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee.
( 3 times). Oh Holy Mary 1 place this cause in
your hands. ( 3 times'). Holy Spirit, you who solve
all problems, light all roads so that 1 can obtain
my goals. You gave me the divine gift to forgive
and forget all evil against me, and that in all
instances of my life, you are with me. I want in
this short prayer to thank you for all things as you
confirm once again that 1 never want to be separated
from you in eternal glory. Thank you for
your mercy toward me and mine. The person
must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, the
request will be granted. This prayer must me published
after the favor has been granted.
