I believe Irdnt my jier.sonal knowledge of the public affairs of .Nassau County that one or mort f)f its officials are guilty '>f a misdemeanor a nd possibly a felony."

If the walls and roof of tbe boose I are of flre-reslstant material fnlly 80 per cent of the flre hazard Is overcome, i says the writer of an article on "Com- ! mon Sense Home Building." which is published in the June Is-sne of Con¬ struction. In the Interior it Is not nec- ' essary to eliminate wood from the fln- ! Ishing. There Is no objection to trim on doors and even the floors above the first may be of woeid. The basement should, by all menns, I be cut off from the rest of the hous'e ; by a masonry floor, protected stUlrwuy : and fireproof doors connecting with the flrst floor. Partitions should be of : fire-resistlve material in order to check the rapid sjiread of flumes. In other : words, think of flre us It really Is and use common sense In the construction of the house.
In most localities a house of this type Is credited with a notic<>able re¬ duction In insurance cost. Naturally, too, the cost of maintennnce is re¬ duced, painting and repairs are not necessary. Another saving factor Is the mutter of depreciation. A frume house with wood shingles, built as they are today, will depreciate just three times as quickly as a masoury houae with a comuKjn-sense roof.
! At the ofBce of thr Nassau County j .\s8ociatlon one of the officials denied I that the association had dabbled In I politics or was oppvising Smith on ¦ r>olitical grounds. "We have no ' animus against Mr. Smith." he said. Put Bones Under Ground.
Most people do not suspect the great fertilizing value there Is in bones. To the ordimiry niiiiiteur giirdener there Is a wide difference between the bone he holds in his hand und the soluble plunt food .so necessary to plant de- vel(;pment. But the fertilizer compa¬ nies know that bones ure the highest- class fertlUz.ers (not counting war prices of potash) .except dried blood. Ground bones sell ut over ,$,'10 a ton wholesale, when other fertilizers sell around ^'20 to ^'2't a ton. The scientilic funm^rs use large Quunlilies of ground bone, even in the growing of such crojis us wheat, corn and oats. Ke- meinber this next spring.
