TOWN PBOMOTION.
Growth, advance In population, prosperity and civic advantages. Is the dream of every community. The Importance of a town Is gauged by the outside world by its figures of population. Every progre!*ive man la anxious to see his town grow greater, confident that at the same time it must grow better,
Whero so many towns are 'ompet- ing for the aame end, many of these bopes must he disappointed. If some places gain, others will remain sta¬ tionary or lose. If a community re¬ mains indifferent to its own advance¬ ment, the chances are that it will re¬ main stationary, while its young and enterprising mon go elsewhere.
The prolilem of what practical things can he done to make a town advan(e in population and prosperity is ono vitally important to our own comniunil.v. How shall we get our share of the splendid advance that has been accomplished by so many places, which lias multiplied the value nt all properly and of every solvent business, and secured many public improvements and comforts of living not otherwise to be had?
This question was put recently by a representative of Tho Nassau Post to the secretary of a hustling Board of Trade in one of the most progres- aive cltioa in the United States,
The questioner expected to-have tho secretary rool off a long story of organization and machiiwjry, by which new induslriis wore secured, capital subscribed and facories built.
luHtead hi' was surprised to hear the Fioard of Trade man reply, that it often seemed to him that the getting of new induatries and increase in population wen; a matter of luck or chance. "You can send your appeals in a thousand directions," ho said, "and get nothing. Then in some un¬ expected way the news of your ad¬ vantages makes an Impression on tiie thoiiHanri and first man. in tho quar¬ ter whero you leaat expected it, and you land something big."
Thia Hoard of Trade man did not mean that a community can lie back and go ahead without effort. On the contrary, only consislenl and inces¬ sant oiTort can malte a town grow. This effort ought not lo be burden¬ some on any one man. luit it must ho persiatont. The next following edi¬ torials in tills series will teil how sev¬ eral lioard of Trade men think that thoso oiids can be achieved.

Ninety-nine out of a hundred peo¬ ple are too seiisitivo to criticiam. The raonioiit nii.vfliing Is aaid in the local c-oniniinity adverse to their personal- 'Ity, i(io;ia, or manner, they liercely repent it a a a malicious attack.
Yet tliero is vory liltle personal mallei' in daily life in either personal or business relations. Criticism is the saving salt of lito. Withoui it private life would go stale und public life would be rotten with corruption.
Most public men soon learn to steel themselves against ordinary personal attack. Tlicy find out that they can ii"urn mucli nmre anil gain mucli mon; help from ojtponentH than from frionds. LETTEBS TO THE EDITOR.
270 Mliler Avenue, Kreeport, L. I,. To the Editor of "The Nassau Post."
In your Issue of Kriday I6th inst. the very caustic comment on "The Woman Suffrage Club of Kreeport'"' Is absolutely not In order.
Personally, I find Its president a vory faithful worker "always on deck," and always in liarmony with the oflicf-.r.s of the club. Tliere has been a worm gnawing, but cannot ever got at the "vitals ' of our club. The present memOers of that organ¬ ization realize that "unity Is strength," iience our large enroll¬ ment. The writer of the, article in the issue of April Iti shows extremely poor judgment in writing such an article—-With any proper regard and conservative manner, had "they" any "grudge," to have told "their" trou¬ bles (real or imaginary) and threshed them out at the ciub meetings instead of the present meihod, would have heen far .superior. However, since they have taken the initiative, "we are game." Thanking you very much for yoar courtesy in publishing this.
Very truly yours, (Signed)
(Mra.) LENA C. LEONARD.
