Mew Tork.—Many persons have ask¬ ed Boss W. David* singing teacher to MlsB Margaret Wilson, daughter of the president of tbe United States, why Idle lias decided to t>ecome a profes¬ sional singer. To them he has replied, becanse it gives her tbe greatest oppor- tonlty for expressing herself. He said:
"Miss Margaret Wilson has made singing her life's work. To her, sing¬ ing is her very life. I have been ber teacher for four years, and I think I know ber. She puts ber singing above everything else, and I can truthfully say that in all my eighteen years of

Clayoquot, B. C.—Marooned for thir¬ ty-four days on a small Island in tbe Pacific ocean is the experience of Ev¬ erett Fitzpatrick. a rancher of Flores Island, according to word received here. He left Ahousat. where bc bad pur¬ chased provLslons, alone in a canoe, and wben near a small uninhabited Island he was caughi in a squall and bis ca¬ noe wns swnmpo<l.
Fitzpatrick managed to stnre a sack of flour, a package of oatmeal and a few matches. A case of eoal oil also wns washed ashore. On tbese provi¬ sions he existed for more than a month. Big waves washed over tbe small Is¬ land, but by liishlng himself to one of the trees he managed to hold on. He was found by two Pesquolt Indians in u demented condition.

teaching I have never known any one who has worked as hard as does the daughter of the president."
Miss Wilson bas a lyric soprano voice, with a dramatic tendency. She sings with perfect breath control, and In the studio takes high D with ease. In publlc, however, she bas "sung only np to B fiat She Is able to sustain her high voice, which Is growing every day. She Is essentially a lleder singer, and It Is her ambition to become one of the greatest lleder singers In Amer¬ ica, Her German Is perfect, and she has good command of French and Italian. Of course she sings in Eng¬ lish too.
But, whnt is more remarkable. .Miss Wilson has the mettle to stand up to deliver her message. She has the pow¬ er of concentration and the [iroiier amount of "nerve" to l)ecome a sue cessful singer,
Wblle her private recitals had at¬ tracted considerable recognition it was tbe success which attended her first pnbllc appearance at the Syracuse mu sic festival last May that determined her to become a professional singer. Subsequent concerts in Clevelaud aud Buffalo, where she won the unstinted praise of all tbe musical critics, con¬ vinced her that she had decided wise ly. Wilson G. Smith, an influential Cleveland critic, publicly annouiictd before the concert that if she did not "deliver the goods" he would send her back to the White House. But tbe following day be wrote:
"It was her unaffected personality and the sympathetic and lyric quali¬ ties of ber voice that won the audi ence.
"Tbere were uo efforts at vocal chi canery to catch the audience. Her at¬ titude toward her art and-lier auditors was one of genuine earnestness to in¬ terpret tbe musical language sbe loves, witbout self exploitation.
"Tbe sincerity of her artistic predi¬ lection was evidenced in ber selection and sympathetic interpretation of two •f Robert Franz's too much neglected songs, models of classic purity. If Miss Wilson had done nothing else she would have won my critical esteem."
With criticisms of such a nature It wns only natural that Miss Wlison should feel encouraged to sing at otber festivals. She wlll appear at several events in April and May, and next fall she will begin an extended concert tenr, slngUig lu New York as well as la the principal eastern and southern cttlee.
