The Nassau County Association's entry into politics in Heinpstead on Tuesday met with a sound and de¬ served rohiik« when Supervisor Smith was re-elected by over 1,000 majority, ¦ftie eampuign was the most spirited Hempstead has seen in a decade, and ~the attempt made to accomplish Mr. Smith's defeat through slander and billin((sgate in the name ot "reform" miscarried completely. The result shows Uiat the people can be trusted to extract truth from falsehood. Wheat from chuff, and they did it with great pieclsinn in Mr. Smith's case. "We have yet to see a vituperative campaign a succeas.
The '30-called "Fusion ticket" was very much or a joke because there Is practically no Dpinocraiic party loft ia Hempstead, as an organizetion, and < ..when Democrats ar.> comi>elled to I choose between two Republican can-i ..didntee timy ushally do so with inde¬ pendence and with a preference for | iOie better man. Tn Ihls election the i Democrvta very largely preferred .Mr. Smith, and therein showed excellent Judgement, b»>can9e Mr. Smith's re- apectb^ 8dmlnlstrntl*?n8 as Supervl- tMir have been excellent from every point of view, and could not have (ailed to win the majority Democratic vote for him.*
