I near creeks and streams leading into
Hi mpstead bay wliose shore line is
witliin 1',', miles of New York city.
At the Inception of the popularlz- I ing of tlie motorboat the waterways leading to the bays of the south side of Na.ssau county were in their nat¬ ural state: irregular in their course and of variable width and depth. And, yet, in spite of these drawbacks the waterways were used by motoboat owner.s who wished to reside In a territory within easy reach of Man¬ hattan,
The first extensive improvement and reclamation ot a southside water¬ way was at Woodmere when the M. .Morgentliau Interests developed the Burton holdings there a decade ago. Subsequently the developers of Long Bearh planned the Reynolds channel tlirough Hempstead bay immediately to the north of the built-up part of Long Ueach. Tills channel was com¬ menced, but It is not finished. Later the township of Hempstead did con¬ siderable dredging and deepening of waterways at Freeport and In tlie middle of the bay. These latter Im¬ provements have been spasmodic and dependent on tlie wbidom or unwis¬ dom of town boards.
The first development of a chain of I waterways adjacent and flowing Into Hempstead bay was at Baldwin Har¬ bor, on the main land directly oppo¬ site Long Beacli, The demand of motorboat owners lias been and is for hoiile sites or liomes convenient to a busy line and yet on or handy to the tihore.
Three years ago a Venetian system of waterways wae begun at Baldwin Hartor and it Is now practically com¬ pleted; and. It has been done by priv¬ ate enterprise. Nearly two hundred houses are built, aold and occupied by owners who bought because they desired to reside where they could In¬ dulge their nautical tastes and where
they and their familiefi could have sea air and all city advantages.
Because of the extensive system of waterways at Baldwin Harbor the entire north shore of Hempstead bay has been benefitted, a^ land there previously dormant Is being built j upon.
As niotorboats have propellers to move them so are they prlpellers of real estate activity along the entire south shore of Nassau county.
Aubrey Pettit of Baldwin, a broth¬ er of Stephen P. Pettit, sheriff of Nas¬ sau county, was appointed as chief of police of the village of Long Beach on Tuesday. Mr. Pettit had been em¬ ployed ou a number of caaes by his brother, and the village board of Long Beach feels it has made an excellent selection for the Important position.
He Is also Past Exalted Ruler of Freeport Lodge, and in that position sliowed careful executive ability, and a most retentive memory, which is ex¬ pected to stand him good In his new position. It is said of him that he never forget* a face or a name, a need¬ ful characteristic In criminal inves¬ tigations.
