For two score years at Babylon, a general store, considered one of the best on the sOUth side of Long Island, was conducted by Dowden Brothets. Recently they made an assignment and closed the store. Lament¬ ing the fate of the old-time house, the Babylon Leader of last Friday said:
"Those who pass the closed Sitore of Dowden Bros, must find focKl for re¬ flection, especially those who ,h«ve chipped their nicklea and doUaft in¬ to the tills of the chain stores, 'whose proprietors have never spent tis much as a dime toward the supporf of the viUage." '
The Leader paid tribute to the hard work of the Dowdens and the quality of goods they kept Referiance also was made to the liberality of the vet¬ eran merchants in extending credit and to their enterprise in aiding the development of B&bylon; the banks, churches, ekctric light, hos'pital, news¬ papers, and other institutions, and ss taxpayers and citizens contributing to every cause or movement to help build up the place. Their failure waa heralded as a calamity to the village by the Leader. Touching further up- «n the giituation, the Babylon paper

The presence of mosquitoes in countlsss numbers throughout tiie greater part of each summer retards the nat-ursi development of the coun¬ ty. Great swarms of mosquitoes from the south shore aatt marshes sweeping over the entire county, house moequi- toea in abundance everywhere, ms- l«riS'«arry^mosqnitbes hi msMiy sec¬ tions, particularly on the nortih ahore, act as a deterrent wtth people who would otherwise make their homes in the county, and with industrias. Nsa- aau County eannot hope to fully re- aHze its many natural advantages until the mosquito is exterminated.
In Ns'w Jersey it is estimated thst because of mosquitoes, at least 1.500,000,000 is kist in the Value of farm lands, residential communities and pleasure resorts, exclusive of in- dustriaJ loeses and losses from dis¬ ease. At 4 per cent, this is a loss of income amounting to f20,00O,O00 a year, a truly stsggerinK price to pay the mosquito for its obnoxious pres¬ ence. If the retarded development of Nassau County was measured in dol¬ lars and Cents, the sum would reach an astonisihing figure.
The New Jersey farmer and the New Jersey business man have their heads together and ere determined to recover a pert of their tremendous loss. iSeveral Jersey counties are spending over |200^OO0 S year in aijti- mosquito work. The state is about to appropriate a further $150,000 a year. $350,000 a year to recover per-

Anti-mosquito work is not experi¬ mental. It has been completely suc¬ cessful in many psrts of the world. The work in New Jersey is already showing results. A few years ago
