Facts About the Declaration of Independence.
SIGNING OF THE DOCUMENT.
Th* Laat Nam*, Thomaa MoKaan, to Oo on tha Praoieua Parehmant Waa Not Appandad Until 1781—Th* Mack- Unburg and Maryland Daolarationa.
Of the flft}--8li men who flnally af¬ flxed their aiguatureR to tbe Deciara- 4ion of Independence, a document that heralded the birth of n nation..to the 9U|)port of wbicb tliey pledged their lives, their fortunes and tUelr sacred honor, iioMe was ao old ns to lie lia¬ ble to a suspkloii of seulllty aud few so youug tbat they might be ac¬ cused of Immaturity of Judgment. Eveu John Hancock, rather a roving lilade and none too stable in his per¬ soual habits nud predilections, waa thirty-ulue years old wheu tbe general congress met In ludt'iiendence hall, Philadelphia, to sit in Judgment upon the wording of tbe historical document.
Tbe oldest man in tbe assemblage was Benjamlu Franklin, then six months past his .seventieth birthday, ami the youngest was Tbomaa Lynch, Jr., of South t'arollna, who was boru .Vug. 5, 1749, aud wns tbiyefore a luontli short of lieiug twenty-seven years old.
The flrst of tbe signers of the De^'- Inratlou to die ufter the execution of tbe instrument was Button Gwluuett of Georgia, wbo passetl away on May 27 of tbe following yeur. Cbarles Car¬ roll of Carrollton, Md., lived tbe longest ufter tbe menioruble date. He remain¬ ed until Nov. 13, 18312.
James Smith of I'cnusylvaula was tbe only signer wbo lived to a more ad¬ vanced age than Charles Carroll. He was uinety-slx years old wben his life eudeii on July 11, 1800. There were three others who became nonagena¬ rians—John Adams of Massachusetts, who passed away at ninety-one years; William Ellery of Rhode Island, at ninety-three years, and Francis Lewis of Xew York, at ninety-one j'ears of age. Tbe youngest to die was Arthur Middleton Of South Carolina, who waa ouly forty-four years old at his demise on Jan. 1, 1788.
Of the flfty-slx signers but seven bad advanced past the age of sixty years on July 4, 177G. Nine were between tifty and sixty, tbere were nineteen between forty and flfty, tbe same num¬ ber, nineteen, between thirty and for¬ ty nnd two below the age of tliirty years. The average age was 43.87 years.
But, contrary to popular belief, the Declaration of Independence was not signed on July 4, 177C. As a matter of fact, the last signature was not ap¬ pended until five years later. In 1781. Thomas McKean, a member from Del¬ aware, who had been present on July 4, 1770, but "absent with the army at the general subscription of said instru ment," applied for permission to sign. An act was theu passed permitting him to affix his signature, and "he added thereto the date of such subscription." Another delegate, Matthew Thornton of New Hampshire, who had been present at neither the reading on July 4 nor at the later date of general sub¬ scription, presented his credentials on Nov. 4, 1770, and was permitted to sign.
It was the first reading of the Dec¬ laration of Indei)eudence that occurred on July 4, and the tentative draft pre¬ sented by the committee previously ap¬ pointed to draw up such a document was approved by all the members pres¬ ent. ^No resolution was passed until July 10, when It was "Resolved, That the declaration passed on theMth be fairly eugi-ossed on parchment, with the title, etc., and that the same, wheu engrossed, be signed by every member of congress." Two weeks later, tbe engrossing having been duly accom¬ plished, the members of congress then pre!»ent signed It.
Another fact In connection with the Declaration of Independence which we venerate Is that It is neither the first nor the only Declaration of Indeiiend¬ ence from the rule of Great Britain that was made In her North American colonies.
More thnn a year before the framing of the document which we cherish, on .May 20, 1773, q. convention was held at Charlotte, N. C, and an Instrument declaring freedom from the rule of Great Britain was drawn up and sign¬ ed. This was tbe famous Mecklenburg declaration, the original of which waa unfortunately destroyed by fire In 1800. It was reconstructed from memory, aud this "copy" W still preserved.
But even before this the colonies wrote n Declaration of Independence The patriots of Harford county, Md., gathered themselves together at Har¬ ford Town, which y now called Buab. on March 22, 1775. On tbe same day they prepared and signed a Declara¬ tion of Independence, probably the first one e^'er made by the colonies or any INirt of thom, lu formal, written form. The documeD^/vla still in existence.— Xew York SuuV

"Yes," replied the querulous person, slowly. "I shouldn't t>e surprised if it were somewhat better tban in tbe days when It was entirely a molten mass."— Exchange.
