An¬ noying in the sense that a good many motorists who have been buying gas- , ollne from dealers and garages that [displayed signs featuring the word ' staiidard" bave discovered to their astonishment the word as used did not necessarly mean the Standard Oil Companys gasoline, but simply standard gasoline.
Tbe Standard Oil Company Is en¬ deavoring to take care of tbeir patrons by doing everytbin* possible to protect them against what in many cases migbt soem to be an Imposition by using a brand name to designate their gasoline in particular. The brand name Is "Socony" and Is de¬ rived from the flrst letter of each word forming the companys corpor¬ ate title, which is "Standard Oil Co. of New York."
They have also furnished metal sliield signs to all those garages and coalers that handle their gasoline, to he displayed outside the buildings. The company feels that_in this way they bave done everything to safe guard their patrons, as the motorist can either ask for their gasoline by the name "Socony." or look for the "Socony" sign.
As the Standard OU Company's gasoline Is by all odds considered to be the best gasoline manufactured, the company's prompt action in this connection, which while of beneflt to them, might well be called a public .service.
