No, I OF A SERIES INTRODUCING ALICE
ALICE is a wlde- ZJ^ awake little per¬ son who is pos¬ sessed of a real beauny interest in the little and hig things that make liie more comfortahle and more worth-while for all ot us.
She is interested, for in¬ stance, in the train serv¬ ice that, when she so wishes, can carry her across country to almost any place; she is inter¬ ested in the electric light service that makes her home brighter and more cheerful; but she is in¬ terested in the telephone
service to a far greater extent than the others, for the reason, perhaps, that it is the service about which she knows the least.
We cannot satisfy Alice's interest in rail¬ roads and electric light¬ ing, but we can tell her something about the wonders of a telephone system. We are plan¬ ning a number of little trips for her through Telephoneland. You can come, too, just by fol¬ lowing accounts of her travels each week in this paper.
Next week Alice dehes into Telephone History

The entertainment and dance Kiven by the tlremen of the Merrick Hook Ladrler and Kngine Company No. 2, on June 24, was a splendid success. The program wa.s as follows:
"Thr naby KIrphant"
Old Growler, collector of curiosities. .Mr. Walters; liose, his daughter, Mrs. C. L'Hommedleu; (.Captain Rifle, rose's lover, Harry Lelch; Pete, nejrro servant, l-M, Hahnsen; ('uff, nogro servant, John CamiTon. Musical program: Overture, Orchi'Stra; song^, Mr, Ch.arles Midmer; violin solo, Mias Vera Thamm; Irish sonK, Mr, 'Walters; aonif, Miss Vera Thamm; piano solo. Miss Winifred .Meadows; sonp. Harry Leich; song, f'harles Midmer.
The performance concluded with the li.'.iutlful little comedietta entitled: "My l'ncle .'tnthoDy"
Anthony Fleldlnj?. a severe old bach¬ elor, Mr, 'Waltera; OeorRo Allison, his nephew, Harry Lelch; Grace Allison, Gcorpe's wife. Mrs, C. L'Hommedleu; KIt'V Tiubbs, maid of all work, Mrs, .San liel It. Todd,
Ml, Walters as old Growler was a ri'RUlar old bear, while his Uau(?hter Ilfise was just as sweet as a rose could he, Harry Leich was a very jfallant and |,ersisterit lover, and John Cameron and I'^I, Hahnsen were screamingly funny .as the darky servants of Old flrowler. Last, Imt not least by any means, were Sam¬ uel Todd and Carl L'Honiine.lleu, They made uii as the finest baby elephont that nver walked on two—oh, I mean four, feet.
Charles Midmer was at his both sonps, and the aiijilnuse li ed fairly shook the rafters.
Dainty Vera Thamm scored success, as usual. We n Thamm's sweet sonfr o violin solos, ^
Mr, Walters vvas exceedlnly funny In Ms Irish son ITS and Jokes, and he danced round the stas-e as supple as a IB-year- Id miss. The piano solo hy Miss Wini¬ fred Meadows was well pl,T.yed and Knatly aTipreclated.
Harry Lelch disaiipointed the audi¬ ence by refusing to frlve an encore In response to the applause he received after sinRlnp a solo, bnt was readily forgiven whf-n if was found nut that he WHS merely savlnpr his breath for the part he played as the ilephe%v In "Uncle .\nthnny." The sympathy of the audi- 1 nee went out to both he and his wife ¦when the bailiff took possession of their home and his creditors just bothered the life out of him. As Kitty said, "The way 'es badgered with duns his a cau¬ tion," Kinallv the cross-Rralned old bachelor uncle, who had disowned his nephew for marrying HKalnst his ithe
