CABD OF THANKS.
.Mrs, Willlnm Robinson wishes to , thank the many friends who so kindly 'remembered her In her bereavement.
After twenty years of unavailing effort to interest the estate of Chas. Davison in a plan lo open up the iMlii Hiver by dredging from Atlantic ave¬ nue northward lo the Merrick read, Rockville Centre, prominent ciiizens have finally obtained an agreement from Herbert Davison, representing the Davison esLaie. for a grant of laud (Extending a mile aud a quarter northerly to the trolley tracks ai . I'ark avenue, says the Eagle. Thia will make it possible to open a navi¬ gable waterway through the Mill River,
Properly owners w"ho will be di¬ rectly affected by the proposed ex¬ tension of .Mill River have met to devise ways and means to meet thd expense of the grant, which, it is said, will be about |15,000. Tho channel will be dredged to a widtli of about fifty feet and a depth of eight feet.
The extension of the river, ho'.v-- I - er, will be a boon lo lhe flshing ia- I'uBlry and al the same lime will make Rockville Centre and Lynbrook [ waterfront villages. At present it ii necessary for residents of these two villages to walk a mile and a quar¬ ter to the nearest basin of water, cr lo ride by trolley lo Baldwin or Priv- port.
This project has been a source -A considerable agitation and manv meetings nave been held in Washin.^- ton and .Manhattan with the War D(;- partment Khow"ing a lively interest iri it.
When an attempt was made years ago to persuade the Davison Kstau- to consider the granting of land f(»r this purpose it w"as shown that th--:-' i;lie Davisons) had riparian rights and Indian patents together with a royal grant to the properly involved. The matter was dropped except by \\ illiam Bonner and Joseph Bauer.
Ciitil recent years tlie Davison mill was run by water pow"cr, and the (¦hannel was dammed up, but thcv<2 is uo further uae for the mill race because it i.s possible to operate the mill w"ith either gas or electricity. Tbe Davison Estate agrees to remove the flood gales and lo spend a liberal amount of money In excavating iu the front of tlieir properly along the channel.
Long Island Railroad engineers have made a survey of the lands there. .Messrs. Bonner and Bauer, representing the properly owners in¬ terested, have obiained what they say is virtually a promise from the rail- , road company that it will pul a new ' birdge over the channel with a ten- foot clearance, thereby doing away with a grade crossing. The commit¬ tee having the malter in hand has I received no promises from Supervi¬ sor Hiram R. Smith concerning what the County will do al the Atlantic avenue crossing. If the couniy will make arrangements to erect a suit¬ able and substantial bridge here, the projierty owners will excavate tlie through channel to the trolley trackb. Fishermen can gain direci access to Reynolds Bay and of course lo Hempstead Ray and the ocean, via Mill River from the trolley, Thi-; will save fishermen nearly two hours in travel, as by going to Freeport It ie necessary for them to transfer to arioC'.er trolley going southward o ¦ to w,':lk balf a mile.
The $l,'),00)i necessary to obtain the grant of land will be realized by sub- ,sei'iptiiiii.
