'" CLUB FOR SUTRVILLE S001E?
or A MOST IVTESESTniQ LETTER TO THE JVASSAU POST MBS. .AMES DISCUSSES THE QUES¬ TION.
To the Editor of Nassau Poet.
May I through your columns ex¬ press my views of "Piay on the School Grounds?"
Why not a parent-teachers' ciub for Smithville South?
'Boys are a nuisance." With a choking sensation I heard this said of our boys—all boys in general. Now, being the parent of two ooys full of "ginger" (sometimes called meanness by others), I do not agree with the above Statement and the chocking yet remains or "sticks in my crop."
In the school year just past the Smithville schools deserve great credit as a greater percentage of our chil¬ dren have successfully passed in reg¬ ents and grade examinations than ever heretofore. This means fewer failures among our nearly three hun¬ dred children.
To whom shail we give credit? The taxpayers have the privilege by vote to secure our teachers for our schools through our echool board whora we elect and trust as a body to do this work for us. We have never had so many and efflcient teachers who so faithfully and courageously perform¬ ed not only their school dulles but act as a source of strength to us all by their untiring efforts and harmonious work.
These teachers realize the import¬ ance of putting into use the unlimited "ginger" of the normal healthy chllo. How better than by good, clean play? Who bettter nualified than the prin¬ cipal and teachers of our school who have spent many hours directing and playing with our children on the school grounds when we, as parents of real children, have neither time nor means to so do.
What better than tennis? A healthy, quiet sport, developing mus¬ cle, eradicating "yellow streaks," stimulating "team work" and better yet, teaching that only fair piay can promote lasting success anywhere, anytime.
Where better than the school grounds, dear to us all, old or young?
Boys are a nuisance? Are they if provided with good, clean sport and proper persons to guide and direct them where they may work off their exuberant spirits.
My heartfelt thanks to those teach¬ ers and parents who assisted wilh the school entertainment. To the mem¬ bers of the school board who were present and pleased with the efforts of the children and teachers at the
club house entertAinmcnt thereby showing their interest as well ss sup¬ porting the object to secure funds to purchase school games and means ot play, one of the most essential body, brain and character builders of chil¬ dren.
Mats off to our fellow-citizen who has the courage of his convictions who surely was once a child, also who has the loyal support of the parents in Smithville and the good will of the •kiddies." i
To our dearest earthly possession ' the "dear kiddies," may they be per¬ mitted to enjoy wbat is rightfully ttieirs that when they must also look back to childhood scenes, childhood faith for strength to bear life's bur¬ dens, may dear old Smithville South school days ever show fair piay. ,
Sincerely, (Signed) (Mrs.) GEO. W. AMES, Smithville South, L. 1.
