PARIS TALK ENDS TEN YEARS'WORK
Cirty Sijfs MaBjf EipMls La¬ bored Docido on Apparittis.
ALL OF THEM AMERIGANS.
Captain Bollard, Haad ef Naval Radio Service, Declared That WirelM* Telephony Holda Many Additional Advantage*—Powerful Current For Lateat Achievement.
Chicago.—John J. Carty, the Ameri¬ can Telepbone and Telegraph compa¬ ny's chief engineer, who directed the long aeries of wireless telephone ex¬ periments that recently reached a cli¬ max in the talk between tbe American station at Arlington and tbe Eiffel tow¬ er in Paris, said at tbe University club that this latest scientiflc achievement waa all American.
"Tbe great staff of distinguished sci¬ entists and employees of the telephone company who have furnished tbeir brains for tiie development of tbe in¬ ventions, are graduates of American colleges and universities," said Mr Carty. "We have worked in secret to add this laurel to America's scientiflc crown. The achievement is American from the ground up. It Is rooted In America and will be written on the pages of American history.
"Wireless telephony is the product of American genius, the labor of a staff
JOHN J. CAHTY.
of American scientists and otiiers. All I did wu.s to direct the work. The men under me did the rest.
"in tills Wonderful achievement there is slory ououKh for ali. Two of llie principal scientists who Inhered on the problem and whose researches and di-^- coveries were of f;reat value were F. B. .lewett and H. D. Arnold, hoth youn;; men.
"Ten yenrs u^'o thc .Vmerican Tele¬ phone and Teleixraiih company decided to test the iiossibllities of wireless te¬ lephony. There aro approximately 500 eminent scientists in the employ of the cou^p.Tiiy. During the last ten years at least lifty of these men have devoted tlieir time largely to thi; ap¬ paratus needed."
"How would a inessaKe be sent by your telephony apparatUR?'' the inter viewer asked.
"There is a common telephone at the base of the wireless towers," Mr. t'ar¬ ty explained. "You enter thc buildiin: where it's housed and take off the re ceiver, placliip it to your ear. The current that flows through the wire from this telephone has little power. It is not severe enough to more thnn cause your tongue to tingle, provldin.i: power of that strength were applied ti> your tongue.
"Ele<'trical waves caused by the sound of the voice as they pass alon,;; tbis wire reach an electrical apparatus, which is one of the keya to the Inven tlon. This weak current is so develop¬ ed as it passes on and upward that when it runs out along a high tension wire and is shot into the nir in the form of electrical waves the voltage would kill a man. Tbis is accomplished by an electrical generator of between flf¬ ty and seventy-flve horsepower. In other words, this apparatus which de velops electrical currents that will pass around tbe globe develops the saine horsepower as tbe average automobile driven by a business man.
"Tbe waves are sent out in all dl rections and not in a straight line. They reach everywhere."
Captain W. H. Bullard, superintend¬ ent of tbe naval -n-ireless system. Is re¬ ported as saying tbat telephonic com¬ munication between the nayj_ depart ment and war vessels at sea was only a question of Installing tbe necessary apparatus.
"We are able to communicate with battleships now by means of 'wlrelesn telegraphy," said Captain Bullard. "but wireless telephony holds many ad¬ ditional advantages. The person call¬ ing knows exactly to whom he is talk¬ ing, direct contact is established and n reply ifomea back immediateD^."
