The two additions to the Min¬ eola court house are rapidly nearing completion and before long Nassau county can boast of the most com¬ plete county building in the State outside of New York City. The wings heing constructed occupy sites to the north and south of the present court house connecting with tt by arcades. A bond Issue of $275,000 was author¬ ized tor the construction.
The wings are about sixty feet from the present court house aud oc cupy a ground space of sixty feet by eighty-three teet. In the south an¬ nex on the flrst floor, th.^ court rooms
of the supreme court, the justice's libraries, two Judicial ch'iufce:"^ anl lavatories, supreme court clerk's, lawyers', witness <|>fnce8 will be lo¬ cated.
On the second floor of this build¬ ing are the grand jury rooms with lobbies and lavatories for each, three rooms for the district attorney and one woman'a room. In the basement under one of the courts will bo a large meeting room, two extra jury rooms, a lunch room, janitor, boiler and fan' rooms.
In the north building the entire floor wlll be occupied by the county
clerk and above It the board of elec¬ tions will bave their ciuarter. The commissioner ot jurors and several unasslgned rooms are there also. The basement will be used tor storage purposes. Under both ot the arcades leading trom the main building will be passage ways coAnectlng with tbe wings.
Under the new arrangement, the county clerk's oflfice and one ot the smaller rooms will be used as a tele¬ phone central offlce. The room ad¬ joining the present chambers ot the board ot supervisors wlll be occupied by them as a private office. The
comptroller will occupy offlces vacat¬ ed by • the county treasurer, the bherlff taking the former's headquar¬ ters.
On the second flcxjr ot the main building the present supreme court room will be used as a court room for the surrogate and the county judge.
The coniracts were awarded last June. Thc additions harmonize with the general architecture ot the main building. The accompanying picture of the completed building, was the first of Its kind ever published and was made trom a perspective drawing ot Architect Tubby's plans by the Nassau Post.

Residents qf Freeport and other communities of the south side of the Island are particularly pleased with the recent action of Governor Whit¬ man in signing the McWhinney bill directing the state engineer and sur¬ veyor to investigate the plan of the United States government for the con¬ struction of the inland waterway and to make the necessary surveys, esti¬ mate the possible cost, and make any recommendations that may seem ad¬ visable.
Because of a general retrenchment n state expenditures and the lack of any positive declarations of the Fed- c.-al authorities as to their Intentlont., the Legislature did not deem it wise at this time to appropriate the $995,- 000 for the acquisition ot lands and rights ot way for the creation of the waterway. The members ot the Leg¬ islature are deeply Impressed with the advantages that the canal would af¬ ford In coastwise protection of New York harbor In oase ot warfare.
The matter has now assumed an offlclal status and the state engineer Is directed to present the subject to the Legislature tor further consider¬ ation before February 1, next. The entire south side of the Island Is eager for the waterway. The Federal Government, unofficially, has eaid that if New York State would take care of the expense ot acquiring tbe lands and rights ot way that they '.vould do the rest.
Advocate Earnestly Demands the Emancipation of Women.
Certainly there has been a marked increase in enthusiasm among suf¬ fragists during the last few weeks Qotably in the Iar£|| nix^ber ot rally meetings that have been held. Under the auspices of the Equal Franchise Club, a most interesting and convinc¬ ing rally was held Friday evening in Brooklyn Hall. Prominent men and women gave assurances of their belief in the eflicacy of the ballot of woman.
Mrs. Charles G. Hill, president of the club, presided at the meeting and introduced the various speakers, cjuite wittingly. Lyman Beecher Stowe and Mrs. G. Marlon Dnane were well re¬ ceived and gave very unusual dis¬ courses, the latter on "Child Labor," and the former on the "Emancipation of Wonien." Mrs. Doane during the courae of her remarks related personal experience under the bondage of the proprietor of the sweatshop and the factory.
Several clergymen, including Dr. Scott, Dr. Loux, Dr. Gould, Dr. Kar¬ kau, and many prominent business mon spoke in favor ot the cause,., among whom were Messrs. Maxson, C. G. Hill, Harold Brown, C. M. Flint, Lumley and Vossier. Mrs. Vossier and Mrs. Fraleigh took up a most generous collection.

The appetizing L>ong Island duck dinners that are being served at the Claremont Inn in Rockville Centre are attracting no small amount of at¬ tention in the community. The Town Board last week at tbe regular sessions Increased the salary ot John A. Ruth, town treasurer, trom $760 to |1,'200 a year. Tbis action was taken in accordance witb the re¬ cent enactment of the Lecislatare flxing the salary at not more than $1,200 a year.

Spring Meeting to Commence June 2nd—All are Welcome.
The Piping Rock Racing Associa¬ tion announces that for its spring meeting, Wednesday, June 2, iMid Sat¬ urday, June 5 ,fhere will be a "neighborhood fleld," at the south¬ east corner of the track (near the east end of the Piping Rock club house) to which all residents ot Nas¬ sau county will be welcome. This peld afllords a perfect view of the course and the results of each race will be announced. A band will pro¬ vide music. There will be chairs for ladie.^ and a refreshment tent.
Tlie neighborhood fleld is reached by a special road entering Piping Rock from the main Oyster Bay - Glen Cove highway, near the Piping Rock water tower. Parking spaces for a limited number of automobiles and otlier vehicles will be providecj near tlie tield. Those coming in horse drawn vehicles must provide attend¬ ants for their horses as there is no opportunity for hitchiq^g horses.

"I'ra happy," Mrs, ("arman said ¦.vithout enthusiasm, when she was Hbked how she telt, "but then 1 knew it had to be this way; no jury would or could do anything else.
"And wasn't the judge's charge fine? But don't you think it was fair? I knew the jury couldn't con¬ vict nie on such evidence. Now I can be happy for the flrst time since June 30.
"I can go back to my friends and be happy with them, and it it were not for my frifends and the eonlidence they have shown in me, the trials would have been much harder tor me than they have been."
Mrs. Carman has no plans, she said, but she and the doctor will probably go away In a few days for a rest. Asked if she planned to go Into vau¬ deville, she said she didn't, but Mr. Levy said he could not promise that she wouldn't.

George C. Jeffrey, Jr., a young 'lrooklyn lawyer, prominent in Free- port soci-ai circ ie» for many years, and living at 1*0 McDonough street. Broooklyn, pleaded guilty to grand larceny in the second degree last F'ri¬ day. He was indicted ,for grand lar¬ ceny in tlie flrst degree, but County Judge Lewis accepted the minor plea and suspended sentence in view of the tact that restitution had 'been made in full, $583, to Mrs. Retina Leeks, who was tormerly a client ot his.
