Every march¬ er in the ranks wbo does not carry a standard or a transparency will l>e ex¬ pected to carry a "Votes For Women" pennant, so tbat the marching line from end to end will be aflutter with the suffrage slogan. Above this rip¬ pling mass of color will rise the tall standards nnd transparencies that wlll tell the suffrage story as It goes the rounds of the world today.
One of the lentures that will dis¬ tinguish the "banner parade" Is the in¬ ternational division, which will lead all the rest. Never before has suf¬ frage as a world movement been pre¬ sented as It wlll be In this division. JAMAICA, Sept. 9.—That the newapapers of Long Island are ren¬ dering an invaluable serTice to both the railroad company ^nd the public, by continuing to point out the dan- ["gers of driving or walking across grade crossings without first making sure that no train is approaching, is emphasized in a slatement made to¬ day by J. A. McCrea, general man¬ ager of the Long Island Railroad.
The active campaign on the Long Island Railroad against reckless and careless driving over grade croas¬ lngs," says Mr. McCrea, "has been productive of good results. It ia hara- ly necessary for me to say, however, that we would have had Ilttle success without the hearty co-operation of the Long Island press, which has kept constantly before the publlc tbe ne¬ cessity of exercising care at grade crossings.
"Our records show," the statement adds, "that from June 1 to September 1—the period df lieaviest trafflc on both the highway and the railroad— there has not been an accident to an automobile at a grade crossing which hae resulted In a fatal injury. As a matter of fact there have been but two cases of automobiles being struck and the Injuries sustained were com¬ paratively trivial. This Is very sig¬ nificant, because In the past flve years an average of elglii or nine automo¬ bilists have been killed al grade cross¬ ings each year due to reckless driv¬ ing, and especially during the sum¬ mer months. We hoped to go through this summer witliout recording any death at a grade crossing, but this record was made inipo».slble In July by the colliHion of a motorcyclist with the seco'nd car of a fast train on a grade crossing at Deer Park.
"All the things we liavo done, wilh the great assistance of the press, which ha.s been Riven us so freely, for the sake of safety, have undoubi- edly produced this excelleni result. We have been very t'orlunate, as our records show furtlni' that in the 90- day period, from .lune 1 lo Septem¬ ber I, at least seventy-live chauffeur.s, ni'otorcyclisls and drivers of other ve¬ hicles have i disregarded the safe¬ guards we have put in their way, to tho extent of running into the gates whiili were loweieil to protect the public from approacliing trains. of these cases were not narrow es¬ capes, but in the majority of them it would seem that only some special Providence saved the heedless drivers from death."
