At 4 o'clock tt-iis afternoon the N.-issaii County Grand Jury re¬ turned indictments charging five former officers in the Mineola Jail with rape, and bench warrants wers imrnedidtely issued by Su¬ preme Court Justice Russell Ben edict for their arrest.
The men named in the indict¬ ments arc: Winfield S. Box, of Lynbrook, Warden of liie jail un¬ der Sheriff DeMott: Miles S. Rhodes, of Freepon; William Clifford, of ¦" Roosevelt; Richard Millisr, of Baldwin, and John Con¬ rad, of Port Washington.
Box and Miller were arrested by Officers Plant and Raynor and are now in cells in the same jail from which they recently were dismissed as warden and keepers. Rhodes, Conrad and (Clifford are believed to have escaped some¬ time earlier in the day.
