toropping Beards and Roosts Should B« Cleaned Frequontly. In my hen houses the dropping boards occapy the back north end of tbe building and ar« three feet aboTe ttae floor and three nnd one-half feet wide and extend tbe width of the pen. writes a correspondent of the National Stockman. The perches are made of 2 by 2'8 planed and with the edge.s rounded. These are six inches from the dropplnjir t>oards and are hinged to the back of the building so they can l>c raised and fastened wben cleaning olT the dropping tMards.
Dropping boards should be cleaned flt least every other day. If one can not attend to this duty regularly it is far better to dispense with the pint- form entirely and set a six Inch board a sufficient distance away from the fvfde of the house to retain all thedroj) pings nnd fill tho Intervening space with nereml Inches of dry earth, which acts fls nn absorbent of bad odors and Into ^vhlch the accumulations can be raked once In n while, thus obviating the necessity of cleaning the house oftcncr than once a month. Hut I am In favor of the dropping board. It only takea mc n very little time to take my basket and shovei every morning nud collect the drojjplngs, and my houses nre always sweet and clean.
The roosts are great breeding places for lice and should be well taken care of. A preparation Is made of coal oil and carbolic acid, and this is ni)plied to the roosts every week. This does not take loug, and by so doing you will keep the lice nnd mites down and out.

and chicks plenty of ventilation and fresh air at niglit and prevents any animals from entering the coop.
Chickens hatcljed during the winter should be brooded In a poultry house or shed while tlio out.slde weather con¬ ditions nre unfavorable. After the weather becomes settled they should be reared In brpod coops out of doors. One important feature in building a brood coop Is proper ventilation. Hens and chicks need plenty of fresh air.

The accompanying figure (No. 2) shows a brood coop with the window sash used for a door, and when this Is closed it does not allow enough ventila tlou.
Another oonsideratlou Is the jirotec- tlon ugulnst cats, rats nnd similar ani¬ mals. Brood coops should be provkled with some arrangement for closing at night to keep out such enemies.
The Winter Egg Producers. Experts admit that no single breed can be said to be best for winter lay¬ ing, for a breed which will do best In certain circum.'^tancos will not prove suitable in others. The weight of evi dence, howevei\ points to the fact that for winter laying small, nonsitting breeds nre e.xcelled by the heavy sit¬ ting varieties. The nonsltters will lay a greater number of eggs during the year, but the sitting breeds are l>ette: winter layers. Popular among these breeds are Plymouth Rocks. Wynn dottes. Orpingtons, Langshana and Fa rorelles. which can be de|)ended upon under favorable conditions to produce ¦ regular supply of winter eggs.
Coal Ashes For Hens. Coal ashes ere most excellent for chickens of nil ages. If you will give them access to these you will be sur¬ prised to note the quantities they will consume. There Is a certain amouut of lime and grit In ashes wblch often ttden the place of grit and oyster shells. The lime makes the shell for the egga and the hena pick up tbe par¬ ticles of sharp rluders. which tl»ey luw (or grit—Kaoaas Parmer.
