TttF- WA.<WATT POST, FR.BRPORT, N. Y., FRFOAY. APRIL 12. 1918—Pfcg* R
TO CAMPAIGN FOR FUNDS FOR MILL RIVER IMPROVEMENT
Rockville Centre Citizens Hold En- ihauiasHc Meeting in Local Gub Room. \
A large number of citiMna jather- •d in the Rockville C«ntre Club last Tu«aday evening and listened with intereat to the several iipeakers who repreaented the «tate, town and vil- lajTC (rovernmentii aa the plans were explained for the opening of Mill River.
Everybody was impr.'ssed with the H^reat ponsibilitien before the people of the community in thia fo^eat devel¬ opment. Incidentally the Third Lib¬ erty Loan received a boost, when the sufpgeation was made that the contrib¬ utors to the lund for the purchase of the riifht-of-way throujfh the Davison Mill property make their contrtbu- tions in the 1u>rm of Liberty Bonds.
O. H. Tuthill acted as chairman and explained in brief the plana which are beinjf followed, bejfinning by read- inji: the ai^reemcnt whereby the Davi¬ son Estate agrees to (five the right of way through its mill property at Eaat Rockaway. He stated that the abutting property owners along the proposed channel had already contrib¬ uted approximately $7,500.
Hiram R. Smith, Supervisor of the town of Hempstead, representing the Town Board, gave his enthusiastic approval and stated that he consider¬ ed it a matter of the greatest mo- nrent not only to the people of the vil¬ lage, but to the entire community, provided the plans of the vilhifr^ n" thorities provided for the opaning of some aect'on of the waterway as a public dock for the unreK'.rlcteri use of the people of the town. The plans as now proposed involvo on the part of the town the re-building of the bridge over thn channel at Atlantic avenue. East Rockaway, also the bridge at Park avenue, before the improvement can be continued above that t>oint. The town also is to do the dredtring of the channel. Mr. Smith statod in this connoction that he expected that there would be avail¬
able funds thia year to the amount of approximately $6,000, which would be suJficient to do all the work which it would be possible to do this sea¬ son.
He urged the people, eapecially thoae of Rockville Centre, to take the matter in hand and see that it was carried forward to a succesaful ter¬ mination and pledged his co-operation in every possible way.
Village President Edwin W. Wal¬ lace was called upon to state the plans of the Village Board. Mr. Wal¬ lace stated that in his opinion this was the flrst real proposition for the
?)ening of Mill River; the Board of ru.itees, acting in conjunct'on witli the committee, had secured -options on several different plots adjoining the proposed channel in order to provide public dockage and a public park with bathing facilities. In this connection he urged the people to secure some available site for a public park be¬ fore tht pi ices of land are iniTea"od, and promised that as so.iti nf' the matter is in proper shape th« i^oird will submit a proposition to the voters of the viliHge to purchase such a s'te. The r.uafd is ready to recommend such a proposition as will secure a nuhlif dock where motor boa-H can bs kept, where there will be bathing facilities and a playground for the children
Mr. Peacock, renresenting the I,ong Island Traction Company, said that until the channel was extended above Park avenue and had reached tbp nropertv nf the Traction Company hu felt that therp was not much that his comnarv rnuld do in tho matter, but
would aiH in ovcv wav ! ^-riu'd.
Assemblyman McWhinney n'^dres'- ed the mpetiner nnd dwelt at length r.»i ^ho trr^Tt nr''"'ibilities of .T,imaicn Tinv beenminrr the greatest wb^ptww in tbe countrv "nd honed tn "ee *.he day when n rR^id^^t of Rockvill" rt>n- tre could riHo in bis motor boat from the docV 'n Mill River and nroce^d throuarb the 'nlnnd wnterwav ri^-ht to tbe rifv of New Ynrk. Mr. Mc- Whinnpv cave a grsnhic descrintio" of lip flHvanfcaces of such an inlan'' waterwny as a nroctection to the citv
I of iNew York in the event of an at¬ tack by an enemy fle«t. Coming down to the question of Mill River he stat¬ ed that a bill ha<Vhe«n passed in the Lffrislature providini; for the official
: survey of the proposed channel by the State Engineer, and he recommended
I that the committee and the Villajre Hoard meet with the Engineer and go all over the situation and lay plans
' broad and comprehensive enough to take care of the future and that fact that Mill River will eventually be¬ come one of the lateral channels of the Inland Waterway System.
The chairman read a letter from the Ix>ng Island Railroad Company which indicated that while at present under war conditions they are pre¬ cluded from undertaking any larjre improvements, they would eventual¬ ly be in a position to conform with the general plans.
A number of othor sneakers follow¬ ed, all in favor of the proposition. It was then in response to the nug- gestion of Mr. McWhinney that the contributions take the form of Liber¬ ty Bonds that Supervisor Smith stat¬ ed that personally he would subscribe to the extent of a one-hundred dollar Libertv Bond. He was quickly follow¬ ed by President Wallace and the oth¬
er mambera of the Village Board prea¬ ent, as well as a number of others, so that withi na few minutes nearly $1,000 was pledfred. The committee in charge will in the near future com¬ pile a list of suhwcribers.
The Business Men's Association, through a letter to the chairman, en¬ dorsed the undertaking, and it is to be taken up by them throujrh a com¬ mittee to be appointed at their next regular meeting.
The committee on subscription; is to continue its activity in securing pledges twords the funds. All pledges are made with the express under¬ standing that if the total amount is not raised and tbe openinsr of the channel accomplished, that the money will be refunded. Subscription blanks may be had at the local banks as well flfl by different members of the com- mitt-ee. The public is invited to help, whether the subscription ia large or amall, as It i* only throtig-h the co¬ operation of the citizens that the mat¬ ter can be accomplished.
There will be a nublir meeting held in the villafre office on Thursday. April 18th. at which time it is hoped the subscriptions will be completed and tabulflted and th" •proposition will be generally discussed.

WHO AM I?
I am more powerful than the combined armies of the world. I have (Ipstroycd more men than all the wars of the nations.
I am mure (deadly than bu lets, and I have wrecked more homes than the mightiest of
si(^(zf Kuns.
I stfal in the United States alone, over $300,000,000 each year.
I spare r.o or,p nnd 1 lind my victims amonK the rich and poor alike, the young and old, the strong and weak. Widows and orphans know me.
I loom up to such proportions that I cast my shadow over every field of labor, from the turning of the grindstone to the movijig of every railroad train.
I massacre thousands upon thousands of wage earners in a year,
I lurk in unseen places, and do most of my work silently. You are warnedWainst me— but you heed not.
I am relentless—I am everywhere—in the house, on the streets, in the factory, at rail¬ road crossings and on the sea.
I bring sickness, degradation and death, and yet few seek to avoid me.
I destroy, crush or maim; I give nothing—but take all.
I am your worst enemy.
