One result f)f the war rei)ortcd from lOurope has been a marked increase in the number of arrests of children for juvenile delinquency. In England the numher of child arrests rose In one year 34 per cent, and in Germany about 50 per cent.
The Children's Society urges par¬ ents and all others to aid in prevent¬ ing a similar experience in lx)ng Isl¬ and. Parents are especially advised to keep informed as to the \^here- abouts and conduct of their daught¬ ers, not only during the evening but also in the day time. It is apparent that the Board Is making (very effort to unsaddle, the taxi)aycrs from the unfortunate lease made with the City of New York by which the Village pays $750 a year for land east of the main slreel, sup¬ posed to be iis(!d for a village park. '1 he matter has been referred to /il¬ lage Counsel for a report at the next meeting.
A grist of other routine bjiainess was transacted at the meeting. At- Kiition was given to the request of Fire Chief Randall for flfty tons of coal for the Fire Department. It waB decided to place a small incan¬ descent light at the corner of Har¬ ris and Columbus Avenues.
Counselor E. .N. Two inl'Tcstlng political lights ; were staged in tile Town of .North j Hempstead, aroonp the Ki-piihllcnns, j for the town cominitteeship. Com- | pir)dore Byron C. Could, in a three- i cornered contefjl, defeated Charles I-). I H>dc and Henry Decker. (^nuld'sl strength was never more forcibly' .jh )wn as the vote reveals. He ob¬ tained 75 to Hyde's 55 votes, while | Decker finished a good third with 4:3 ^ votes. The total Reimblican vote in i Port Washington was hroiiglil out. I The contest was cleanly fought, but j it was hot from start to finish.
Several surpilses resulted at the | Democratic primaries on the south, side of llie Town of Hempstead. In I'reeport, Edward S. Keogh, chair¬ man of the Town Board, was unseat- (d by Felix Duffy, and in Lynbrook, I'^dward ' .McNally, vice chairman of the Town Board, was defeated by Thonias K. Box.
The contest in Freeport was a hoi one. Kedgh, a lawyer, who had the or,i;ani/ation indorsement, vvas defeat¬ ed by Duffy by five votes. Duffy mus- tired 33 supporters to his cause. The light was particularly keen because ot the enmity that* has existed be¬ tween Duffy and Bertram Gardner, th< Stall' Coininitteeiiian, who was nalurally interested in Keogh's suc-

A plea has come from the American Girls' Aid for woolen bathing suits bf any size, children's or adults', which may be sent to France and used as underclothing hy the people in the w ar zone. Wool is unobtainable, coal scarce and prohibitive in price, and these snits, which have attributed so much to our health and happiness this summer, can be made to give com¬ fort and health this eoming winter to our French Allies.
