Mexico an Indian Country? It Is of Importance to Inquire Into the nttitiide tnken by the southern Indlnns of Mexico toward the offlciai Spanish civilization, says the New Re¬ public. If It Is diracult for an out¬ sider only slljchtly acquainted with the southern Indians to understand the reasons for their marked hatred of the Spaniards ... It spems self- evident of anyone who has spent any time with them. To the wmthern In¬ dians, the Spaniard and his successor, ftie Spnnlsh-spenklng Mexican, is the cruel alien conqueror. They feel that they nro Indians and thnt Mexico Is an Indian country. Ff)r instance, ono of the common objections to Madero encountered In Oaxaca wn.s that he | was not an Indian and thnt the presi¬ dent of Mexico should he an Indian, This attitude Is slgnlflcant, nnd It Is not strnnge to And even a n«>rtliern Indian like Iltiertn proudly exclaim¬ ing: "Yo Kf) Indlniio." Carranz.n's lack of populnrlty In the south Is not so much due to the fnct thnt southern Mexico I.s the home of Diaz ns to the fact that Carranzn Is not nn Indian.
