A large number of young boys met at Sander's Hall this Tuesday even¬ ing. There was a very good attend¬ ance and the members elected tbe following offlcers: President, Anton Helys; Vice President, Frank Kurly; Secretary, Alex. Zleman; Treasurer, John Bergen.
The boys decided to hold regular meetings every Tuesday and Friday evenings. The dues will be 50 cents a month and no members under 16 ¦will he admitted. As Mrs. Harvey aptly put it "Some women don't like knitting, and don't know one end of a knitting need¬ le from the other, but tbey can make sandwiches or drive a car or a horse or do any one of a number of ser¬ vices they care to pledge for." On Thursday evening-April 12, a meeting of the citizens of Merrick was called under the auspices of .Merrick H. L. and K. Co. No. 1, at their Fire Hall on Oakwood Ave., to form a Home Defense League under tiie Sher- riff's authority. About one hundred attended.
The mcctin.c' was called to order hy C. A, Calkins. The Rev. Wm. Little- , brandt was asked to lead them in prayer. .Mr. Harold Bunker was el¬ ected chairman. Capl. McAllister of \ Henipstead, Mr.Biickner and Mr. Grace ' of Great Neck; .Mr Krwin an*~Mr. W. S. Pettit of Woodmere were present and all spoke of what was beeing done in other communities, explaining in detail the workings ot their Home guards or Defense Leagues.
A motion to make a permant organ¬ ization was carried and Mr. Harold Bunker was elected president, Mr. J. VV. VansSicklen, Vice President and .Mr. Harry Leich, SecretaiT. Major J. B: Christoffel was elected Military , Director.
An advisitory committee was then appointed consisting of Messrs. D. A. Clarkson, J. W, Phillips, Frank Wolfe W. E. Spear and Geo. M. Hewlett. The above committee was empowered to ; enlarge if necessity arose.
The chairman called attention to the . blanks to be filled out for citizens' wishing to enrpll in the Sherriff's Re¬ serve and also to the fact that a petit¬ ion was being circulated for subscrip¬ tions for the purchase of an American 1 flag and flag-pole to be raised at the railroad station After singing "Am¬ erica" the meeting was adjourned.

All sections of the vlllage were strongly represented,, North and South.
