Th" Village Board ii; economizing.] Yes. dear reader, it is economizing to | the extent of several dollars. As j proof of that, glance through the col-j limns of this week's Post and ynu Officl-ii paper of will not tind two village ordinances j ^Qy^. ])i inled in that were adopted anl pas.sed at thej ,j„,^, ]„ not far distani, we hope, when lasi Board nieetiug. Nol a peep will I yi^^, i.„si will be printed in Freepoit you get at the two vill.ige ordinances,! jj, ^^^ j,^.n plant, and we perhaps will
lage' does not ring true. Particu¬ larly fo, when It Is further added that "on the advice of counsel In the in¬ terest of economy," because we can hardly imagine Vlllage Counselor Al¬ bin N Johnson instructing the august board to concerve expenditures In this line. There is nothing tragic in this decision of the board, how¬ ever, as the readers of The Poat can survl>e it. We should rather treat it as u piece of humor, coming, as il does, f-o soon after proffers that have ¦ been made through certain agencies j to have The .Nassau Posl printed in j the village.
I Theie is one little piece of village I business affecting printing, however. i in wl ich the board does not act with I such stringency. 11 is in relation to jcompeiitive printing. The board, "in i the interest of economy," does not j give out its printing to the lowest I print'i in Nassau Couniy. Judging I this Irom the view point of an ex- j pert, "he Nassau Post would suggest I that I eal economy could be practiced [by ompeiiiive bidding for its prini- I ing.

Tbal The Post is published for your '^ beneiit, lo Kive you the news right off i the 'i'l and to '^ive it served up well, does not concern Ihe \illage authori¬ ties, but il does eoneern you and also concerns the editor of The Post, who all all times has your interest at hear'. The reason'? Kconomy, I be¬ lieve, we have already informed you.
The same board tlia„ last week ap- vicinity news prop'ated $:;iMii» with which lo ''"y; uniforms and eiiuipment for one hun-' dred Ol more member.i of the Home ' Defense I.eague, has •mmedialey de¬ cided lo economize, and you are, as a resui., cheated out of ihi' privilege of re;.din« the laws passed by your | villa/e hoard. Kindly accept this I article as our apology for not inform-' ing you of the two laws just passed.
We are unable to tell you what | pronipled the village board to sub-' Bcrib'-- $,'!000 of your money for thej jnirchase of unifornis and guns, when [ every olher village on I.ong Island Is, raislii." similar sums by popular sub¬ scription. Perhaps 11 l'l urged through j Ihe spirit of economy. The Post Is; pleased lo know thul the League,! w'Xiich comprises a flne set of men, is' secui.fig uniforms. \Ve believe that | there i: luinily a taxpnyer in Ihe vil-j lage hi,I would be happy to vote for! an iippiopriatiim for unifornis, but I don'l joii feel that you have l)een, sli.uhiMi by your villa;;e board? i
So far as we can learn no other vlllui,- board has evei- raised ?3000' without siibmittiug the proposition to the w:ll of Ihe people. Was It pa- trlotloiu or economy that ptonipfed , this iippi'oprialion'.' The ery of econ-1 oiny coming on tbe heels of this gen- j erous appropriation o^ the people's I money sounds like 'a whine. The I sound is not euphonious, to say the j leas'. The two nets so close together! do noi show consistency.
Pel Laps It Is economy that eanses tbe vlllage board to light up a large sign that is hidden away in front of the village offlce to the amount of abou' $500 u year. The sign, as far as we can see, offers no suggestiim. It baldly fills a purpose, and assumes nothing else than an expense which we kM must shoulder. If it were a necessity that could be another mat¬ ter, out It is a vain effort to say some¬ thing that means nothing. Vanity, thy iiume is economy.
Is it economy that leads the board to go on assessing the unpaid taxes on to you, and makes you pay heavy taxes in order to carry the delin¬ quent taxpayers along from year to j year f The board assesses so many i thou.iaud dollars ea#h year, yet many j thousands of dollars In the assess- j ment roll mean nothing. The ta.xes j oh" many homes have not been paid | In yejtrs. but as year after year rolls [ along, this unpaid ta.x Is carried right I to vour door, and you, Mr. Good-1 payer have to shoulder the burden | for ihe tax-dodger. And your village: board blandly permits you to pay. {
If conomy wv-re the watch-word of tur village board, wc are of the linlrtu that they would have long 50 railed tc" n t"x r.t'- " :'? prop- ty tu whi^h taxes—back taxes— Md not lieen j)aid. Nor do we see
again on this interesting point of economy and competitive prin" jig. The Post also expects to , be heard on economy In general, and ! it wiU strive as always to keep the i taxpayers informed of extravagances. I If siK'h a <:onditon should ever exist i iiere. Of course, in the face of this ! campaign of et'onomy, ii would be ' futile tor us to even hint at extravag¬ ance 01 folly, indeed, but -

HOME DEFENSE TO PARADE AT MINEOU
The .Nassau Couniy Home Defense Commiftee has arranged for the ol>- servance of .Memorial Day. May 30ib. in a manner fitting the critical period through which the .State and .Nation are dow passing.
The various units of the .Sherirr's Reserve will parade from Hempstead to the Mineola Fair Grounds, where they will be reviewed by Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and Brigadier General George R. Dyer, who is the commanding officer of the Home Guard of the Stat^ of New Yorlc.
The parade will start from the west end of Hempstead Vlllage af the junc¬ tion of Front Street and Henipstead and Pillion .\venues promptly at 9.1."> a. m., to Main Street, where the line of march will be directly to the Ofd Country Road at .Mineola to the Fair Grounds, where the marchers will he reviewed by Colonel Roosevelt and General Dyer. At the conclusion of the parade addresses will be made by the reviewers.
Colonel Roosevell and Oeneral
Dyer have written diaimuui Frank 1.. Crocker of their Intention to tie present, and tbere is a strong poast- >llity of the attendance of Governor Whitman, who will be in Manhattan on Memorial Day.
The units of the SberifTs Reserve have been drilling nightly in tbe va¬ rious sections of the county, and It is expected that an inspiring sight will be presented ahen the men swing past the reviewing stand to tbe strains of the martial music.
The mounted corps from Meadow¬ brook will head the procession, with the motor cycle squad from Olen Cove bringing up the rear.
Notwithstanding the activity of tbe Home Defense Committee in accele¬ rating the work of organizing Defense Corps, the agricultural work for tho conservation and production of food resources is by no means being ne¬ glected, and Chairman .Morgan H. Grace, of that committee. Is notifying the farmer» that they may. upon ap- plli'aiion to the Bank of Farmingdale. Farmiuudale, and tbe First National Bank, ^'reeport, obfain loans at four and n half per cent, secured by crop liens. Such money is of course to be used for the purpose of Increasing crop production.
