(The conBtahles of the Town of Hempstead and in fact all the lown- «hipH of the State will have new dii- ticH to perform afl Hoon a.s (he town clerks certify to the varlou.s Justices of the Peace a list of all dog owners who did not ohtain llicenses for their dogs on or hefore AiiKust 16. The new work set apart for the constables is that of seizing and impounding all dogs that have no license tags. The ronsfahles are not worrying so much about their new job as they are about the question of how much they can receive for their .services in catching the unlicensed canine.<i.
The Slate l>eparttiient of Agricul¬ ture has advised Town Clerk Gilbert that the constables can receive two dollars for seizing a dog and one dol¬ lar for destroying the animal, provid¬ ed the o" ner does not redeem it within five days after its seizure. This news made the constables feel that the job of dou catcher is not so menial after all, iiniil someone haii- pencd to venture the simgestion that the constables of the Towns in .Nas¬ sau County cannot accept a fee for catcliing dogs since they are under salary and the Town l,aw states tliat all fees received by constables must be turned over to the Townsiiip.
Tho .Slate Law al.^io allows the constables five cents a mile in their tiijis after unlicen.sed dogs. Tbe Town Law says Ihat they shall only bo iillowid their recess.-iry exiienses in the coms(> of tlirir official duties,
Anotlier matter that will have to he decided by the Town officials is tho question of where tho selze<l doss are to be immured. Tb" law states that they niust be iilaced in aTown pound, but the Town has no Town pound, and the Town Law specifies that (111" can only ho established by vote of the people. .Stjlj the Town P.oard may lind a way to esiablisli temporary poniidb.
I'p until 'i'liesday afternoon Town Clerk CillKPt bad issued over three | thousand dog licenses. Ther(> still are abiuit ¦(.''lOd unlicensed dogs in the Town.slii[). As soon as the Town Clerk certifies a li'^t of these to the various Justices of tbe Peace the lat¬ ter "ill issU(> oi'ders to the differeiil constables, peac(> ofliceis uiid police- nicii ill the ToHii U) ii'i|iiuiiil all un- licetisi (1 (log;:.
