Safety Against Magnetic Mines Sfvi" « $ P r o « r a"
A magnetic measurement system
that will be used to determine
and improve the degree of
safety of naval vessels against
magnetic mines is being developed
in Farmingdale by Fair-child
Hiller's Republic Aviation
Division with a $ 498,720 Navy
contract.
The prototype data acquisition
and analysis system, known as a
degaussing range system with
digital computer data processing,
will take about a year to complete.
Degaussing includes a
technique which employs a series
of electrical coils to minimize
induced magnetic fields of
a ship. With the magnetism reduced,
the ship's vulnerability
to magnetic mines is decreased.
In the past, degaussing range
systems have been used to measure
these magnetic fields but as
much as several days were needed
before the magnetic fields
could be adequately reduced.
The range system will consist
of a series of magnetometers
installed underwater in the harbor.
As ships pass over the sensors
their magnetic fields will
be measured and results will be
fed into the computer. The computer,
using these figures and information
about the coil system
aboard ship, will immediately
calculate the adjustments that
should be made to the ship's degaussing
coil system.
Artist's rendering of a typical very short takeoff shows a recent design concept of the tactical.
fighter being developed by EWR Fair child International. Now in the systems definition phase, the
fighter would incorporate new design concepts including swing- out lift engines, deflected thrust
lift/ cruise engines and variable sweep wings. The US/ FRG tactical fighter is conceived as a medium
weight aircraft capable of operating conventionally, in the STOL mode or vertically with normal
loads. After evaluation of the design study, the two nations ( United States/ Federal Republic of Germany)
will decide whether to proceed to the next phase of prototype development.
