              Cars Outnumber LIRR Passengers;
Condition Will Worsen: Nickerson
Five times as many people are
crossing each day into New York
and back by car than on the Long
Island railroad and the situation
will worsen unless action is
taken, Nassau County Executive
Eugene H. Nickerson said this
week.
" The increasing saturation of
automobiles on our roads re­flects
the public despair of ever
getting major improvements
made by the Long Island rail­road,"
Nickerson said.
The County Executive, who also
heads the transportation commit­tee
of the Metropolitan Regional
Council, called upon MCTA

some tangible, visible im­provements."
Nickerson cited a study made
by the division of traffic engin­eering
of the Nassau Department
of Public Works to show that
978,000 highway users cross the
Nassau line into New York and
back as compared with 205,000
passengers on an average day for

the entire Long Island railroad.
On the Long Island express­way,
traffic volume has increased
by 5,000 cars per day in 1966,
or 145,000 vehicles, as against
140,000 in 1965. " Frustrated
suburbanites are using a satur­ated
expressway only out of sheer
desperation," Nickerson said.
" We need more construction and
less conversation from the Long
Island railroad."
The Nassau official reiterated
charges made earlier that Ronan
had taken no action on Nassau
recommendations to build park-and
ride centers to lure motor­ists
away from the highways.
In a letter to Ronan, Nickerson
enclosed a copy of a map showing
increasing automobile use of
highways in Nassau County. The
maps show the number of vehicles
using each road on an average
24 hour day based on traffic
counts taken on both weekdays and
weekends at various times of
the year during 1966.
Heavily travelled roads are:
Southern State Parkway with ap­proximately
64,000; Meadow-brook
Parkway with approxi­mately
53,000; Sunrise Highway
with 38,000; Old Country Rd.
at Roosevelt Field with 35,000;
Peninsula Blvd. with 31,000.
Each day 582,149 vehicles
crossthe; Nassau- Queensline and
316,120 cross the Nassau- Suf­folk
line on major roads alone.
The Division of Traffic Engineer­ing
of the Nassau Department of
Public Works, which compiled
the counts, estimates that another
20% crossed on non- major roads.
With an average of 1.4 persons
per vehicle, a total of 978,000
highway users cross the Nassau
line and 531,000 cross the Suf­folk
line on the average day.
" On an average day the number
of highway users crossing the
City line is almost five times
205,000 passengers carried an
an average day for the entire L. I.
R. R.," Nickerson commented.
Nickerson emphasized that the
maps were not road maps as such
and that their primary value
would be to business and govern­ment
rather than to individuals.

Outdoor Show And Sale
The Student Art Society wfll
hold an Outdoor Show and Sale
on the grounds of Beau Sejonr,
Bethpage, this Sunday afternoon,
October 1, beginning at 1 pjn.
More than 100 paintings by 30
Long Island artists will be on
view. There also will be a Kid­die
Corner for artists 32 years
of age and under. A portion of the
proceeds will go to the Senior
Citizens Club of Farmingdale.
Mrs. Mildred E. Landau of
Massapequa, a housewife and
mother of three, president of the
Senior Citizens Club of Farm-ingdale
and teacher of art in
ihe Farmingdale Adult Education
system, is president of the So­ciety.
Otheroffieers include Mrs.
Emma Davy of South Farming-dale;
vice - president, an art
teacher and Jerome Berger of
Farmingdale, treasurer, a - New
York City business man.
The newly organized Art So­ciety
had a normal and interest­ing
beginning just last June
and already numbers more
40 Long Island housewives

paint, others a curiosity and still

had equal potential
