Spotlight On Town
Special Program
The current issue of " Youth
Service News", a quarterly
magazine published by the New
York State Division for Youth,
spotlights the Town of Oyster
Bay's pioneering recreation program
for handicapped children.
Entitled " Hope for the Handicapped",
the article tells the history
of a program that helped
140 youngsters between the ages
of six to seventeen find new
interests and friends this past
year.
The article points out that,
" the recreation phase of the
program is incidental to the main
goals of the project: to provide
worthwhile experiences for
children who otherwise would be
forgotten by society. It is much
more than a recreation program,
being operated by a staff
of competent professional workers
in the specialized field of
handicapped children."
The story concludes by saying
that the Division of Youth, which
helped finance the pilotprogram,
hopes that it will serve to provide
guidelines for other communities
who might want to follow
a similar pattern in providing
badly needed services for
their handicapped children.
Councilman Ralph J. Marino,
a prime mover in getting the
program started, said that the
town plans to continue and enlarge
the program next year.
" Every resident of the Town of
Oyster Bay, and especially those
who were associated with this
vital and worthwhile project,
should indeed feel proud of our
Town's pathfindingrole," Marino
stated.

The biggest Federal and State grant in the history of Nassau
county is the subject of County Executive Eugene Nickerson's
gesture. The money will come to Nassau residents for the giant
sewage district number three, a 105- sq. mile project in the mid
and southeastern portions of the county. At right is Public
Works Commissioner Herbert Simins.
